is onkyo a good brand?

i just recently got a nice onkyo stereo receiver at my local gw for $7.49.the model no. is tx-811

in any case,was a $7 buck onkyo a good score?the receiver is in near mint condition.its an older model-im guessing mid to late 1980's.:scratch2:

I've got nothing but positive feedback regarding Onkyo. Most of their stuff isn't TOTL, but they're great for midrange stuff. I've got a TX8210R myself, it's my backup amp, and it's got a very nice and analytical sound. I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between it and my Luxman integrated in a blind test, at least as long as we're talking relatively low power. Going loud would be unfair, as it's a third of the wattage :thmbsp:

It's also got a very nice feel to it, weighing in at 9kg, it's certainly massive for its power.

I am a HUGE fan of the TX ?500 MK II series. I think the TX 2500 MK II is THE most under rated receiver made.
That entire series sound great and built to last a lifetime.

Onkyo is well respected for their receivers, but back in the day they were best known for their tuners. Their peak was probably the TX-9090II. I have one in my main system, because it's my favorite tuner (and I've had some good ones, including a Mac MR-78 and a Marantz 10B). This model dates from the same period as your receiver.
 
I had a TX-1500, bottom of the line onkyo with STK power amp chips. It has got to be the best SOUNDING receiver I ever owned, rated at 15 watts RMS per channel. The only thing I didn't like about it was the unusually high noise floor, which probably means it needed some caps and stuff. I did replace the power filter caps with 12,000uf units and it gave the low end a lot more grunt. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of it, it had plenty of power, but I have too many receivers now.
 
Onkyo makes decent equipment honestly rated. I recommend them for their price point since they're reliable and decently made. I see less of them with issues compared to say, Harman-Kardon. I regard them with Denon and Yamaha in quality. Good middle class hardware. Not super high end now but not junk either. :tresbon:
 
I'm listening to some Steely Dan through Paradigm 9se mk2s powered through an Onkyo A-9555 "Class D" silver faced integrated. Though not vintage, I think the A-9555 is one of the real sleepers. There was a time when they could be had for $475 shipped.
 
Onkyo TA-2090 was rated among the top 5 tape decks in the world. Stereo Review March 1988

When I looked at dual tape decks and turntables in my price range, I opted for the TA-RW99 and CP1055FII after looking at reviews and specs. Same with Onkyo DX-C909 6 disc changer.

Same research was done when I purchased the TX-SV909Pro AV. It uniquely had 5 speaker Dolby Pro-Logic surround plus 2 enhanced Front speaker channels in addition to the subwoofer. 7 channels plus the sub. This was before the current crop of 7.1 digital systems. Later they came out with the world first THX certified TX-SV919THX.

I figured the 909Pro would be my main system and last upgrade for awhile and it truly lasted a decade before I caved and got an entry level digital HT receiver last year which sits unused.

Since I got back into vintage, I got an Onkyo DX-C606 changer from Goodwill, DX-706 single disc from eBay. T-9, T-4090 tuners ebay. Some great values can be had because of the ignorance about Onkyo gear. Of course quality varies like any other brand. Their Integra line is considered their premium series.

I don't have the 919, but everything I mentioned above I owned still works with no problems. The TA-2090 had problems playing after getting it out of storage, but after cleaning, now works like it did new.

I have one. They gotta hear it to understand us.. I also run an Onkyo 6500mkll. A huge beast. Sounds it, too.

In regards to the 30 or so receivers I've owned, I'd have to agree. I think we've agreed on this very topic before? The TX-2500mkII sounds fantastic, and has a great phono section. I gave mine to a friend and now wish I really had it back for my office system.

Orgasmic. But not piggish.

Good stuff, ranging from vintage TOTL to quality modern mid-fi that's reliable and nice sounding.

My guess is you got an Onkyo TX- 8211. A classic that ran strong and proud for 11+ years. Only recently replaced within the last approx. 14 months with a similar model but with iPod and XM radio integration.
 
I currently have the gear you see listed below here (as well as an Onkyo TX-84 I've had for a couple decades) and frankly, I love the stuff. The only other "mid fi" stuff i really liked over the years was Yamaha, and Onkyo, IMHO, is very much their equal, if not superior.. the amplifier/preamp combo is nothing short of stunning..smooth, quiet, clean POWER..never breaks a sweat...I'm grateful for this thread, gonna watch it with interest...

Answered an ad on Cl yesterday guy had an older Onkyo tuner and int. amp looked very nice but he wouldn't seperate them from the rest of the system. Good thing I didn't push it when I made an offer on a Pioneer receiver and eq he got borderline hostile lol. I wouldn't hesitate to consider anything by Onkyo I really like the cd changer I have.
