Damn this "tryin' to be an audiophile" stuff.

I've spent a long time in my life avoiding popular music to pursue more underground or alternative aural delights but now find myself listening to Dire Straits and Pink Floyd because they SOUND good. Well produced, clear, lots of dynamic range and contrast.

Velvet underground, A Certain Ratio, The Fall, Magazine,........I apologise for leaving you on the back shelf for so long.

Anyone else listen to stuff they never used to like, just because its well produced?

Before it gets to the point that I'm listening to music I don't like merely because it's well-recorded, I'll make an equipment bonfire in the back yard and start playing golf instead.

I'd rather listen to music I like that isn't well-recorded, than music I don't like, I don't care how well recorded it is.

That said, most music is listenable if given half a chance, and having it well-produced certainly makes it more palatable.

You should listen to the last couple Neubauten albums. They're extremely well recorded.

Listening to music I don't like because it's well produced, is like buying a painting I can't stand because it matches my couch.

Just because it is or was "popular" doesn't mean bad. Sure some stinks, but so do many underground or alt sounds.

a while back, i started a thread that had to do with 'ironic listening'....in other words, music that simply has no place in the current world, is regarded as passe, corny, outre, outlandish, weird, etc.

this describes the bulk of my record collection, along with the stuff that is still thought of as 'good' and generally follows the threads that jeffn mentions in his post...right now i'm listening to Bright Black Morning Light (exquisite production), but before i left the house this AM, i had listened to a vintage Lp by the Norwegian vocal jazz/pop group The Monn-Keys and a Martin Denny Lp.

i like the Bright Black Morning Light as much for the production as the music; i like the other two i mentioned because the antique analog production is fantastic and the music puts a smile on my face that says, This stuff is so corny, cheesy, outre and outlandish it makes me happy....

i can readily enjoy music b

Refuse to listen to anything that doesn't move or groove me...

No.

I'm not a person that listens to music I don't like because of it's production, mastering or any other audiophile qualities. That's not enjoying and I'm in this for the enjoyment.

I won't listen to music that I DISlike, just because it is well-produced/recorded :thumbsdn: ,
but I'm much more likely to listen to music that I am otherwise ambivalent/neutral about, if it is well-recorded. I can get some pleasure just from hearing extremely "good quality sound", even if it isn't my favorite recording (as long as it isn't music I DISlike/hate. )

I can enjoy a song I like in an average recording, but prefer a good one. I cannot enjoy listening to a song in a BAD recording, even if I like the song.

I think I get pickier about sound quality as I get older. I've always appreciated it, but am a little less tolerant of bad sound as I age.

The best, of course, is listening to music that I LIKE, in a good recording. :thmbsp:

Thought you'd slide that one in, did you? You've already got the iPod, so you can do both.

While I actually agree with you, I once did a term paper where I made a pretty fair argument to the contrary. The argument, while considerably better formed and notated, went something like this: It takes a certain amount of education on art, literature or music to appreciate the best any of these arts have to offer. Since most people lack the education or experience with the arts to discern what is really good, we end up with Brittany Spears. I used a poem as an example:

"I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree"

Or something like that. It's some crock of shit poem that was indeed quite popular. My professor absolutely hated the poem and I got an A. Go figure.

Take care,

Ed

I'm with Arkay on this.

That forces me to purchase the ideal pressing by the group, but usually that ends up allright. Not always tho & you can't help a poorly produced lp.

I don't like too much recording technique like those quenn albums or say that hugh padgem style with say 80's genesis stuff. He noodles with about every note and Collins is a good drummer but hardly a super dynamic type. By the time you listen to those genesis songs, you have the impression it came out like a Yes album and every bar in the song was re-worked and then patched together. And everything is just way over-emphasized with vocals and then hide the keyboards even moreso in the mix to make sure the group leader is heavily featured.
