View Full Version : Ever bought an item from an Aker/the AK classifieds?

Just wanted to know who her has bought items off an AK member, using the AK classifieds, or through other methods.

There's a host of very good things about buying from an AKer, in my experiences.

Of course, $2 donated to AK to list an item is very affordable, and the mooney goes to a good cause. That should be a given.

Packing is always top-notch, if not overkill- but that's a good thing. How often is an item shipped from the 'Bay inadequately packed? for me, unfortunately almost always.

Pricing is most often fair, at least, with the occasional pricing deal. Sure, you may find an item for less on the 'Bay, but who are you buying for? What consition is it, really? And is the seller as experienced, as knowlegable, as honest as an AK member?

For the record, I have never been burned, duped, or taken advantage of, from a fellow AKer. No AKer has ever lied to me. I've never been disappointed by an AKer. I've always paid an honest price, not always a price "score" but the items have always been top-quality. They've by all means been a fair transaction for both parties, with the occasional bargain at times. Nothing shipped to me from an AKer has ever arrived damaged, from what I can recall. No AKer has ever fudged the truth, exaggerated, or outright lied to me about an item.

I've bought/received 3 integrated amps, two amps, one pre-amp, around four or five receivers, two cd players, one cassette, two reel to reels, one record player, two timers, one EQ, one spacializer, one dynamic range expander, one noise reduction unit, around a dozen pair of speakers, and a host of other items, and parts.

This off from about 12 or so members.

The downside is you can't always find what you want. The upside? all those positives I've mentioned above.

Now, how about you? How many of you have bought through the AK classifieds?

And folks who sell gear- how many of you have sold through the AK classifieds?

How positive were all your experiences?

I've looked a bunch. Most of the prices are out of my range, but then I am a bargain hunter. I have sold a couple of things from threads where people are looking for something. I will keep looking, I am still wanting a nice intergated tube amp with headphone output.

I've both bought and sold through the AK classifieds, and every time was a good experience.

Yes, twice through the classifieds, and both times from merrylander.

Have bought and sold through PMs, as well.

Unknowingly bought two 'bay items from different members.

All went smoothly.

I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from established AK members, nor would I hesitate to sell in the classifieds, for the reasons you mentioned.

What he said! :thmbsp:

I prefer dealing with AKers. Had enough with epay -- too many horror stories.

CL is still a good source.

I've sold unknowkingly to several AKer's and a few who I suspected of being members. Sometimes the questions they ask demonstrate too much knowledge. I've bought from fellow members and everything was as promised and packing was overkill. All good experiences.

I don't know if I want to identify myself as a member in my sales descriptions. I had one guy figure out who I was from my CL ad and he started asking lots of questions. Are you so and so from AK? Why did you say that? Never bought anything. I told him to join AK, but he said he wasn't interested and then kept asking more questions. Kind of creepy.

I've bought from AK'ers on the classifieds here, CL, and eBay. Didn't know the CL deal was a member (I was doing some focused shopping) until I checked the AK classifieds and found the same photos! All deals have been handled exceptionally, all packing/shipping first class.

Other than buying, I've had members pick up things in the thrift they know I'm looking for and mail them to me, I'd had members offer items or to look for items simply from a mention in a thread - the mutual support that occurs between most members here is proof positive that there's a community here, transcending any forum I've ever been a member of. :music:

Merrylander is a heck of a nice fellow, built a custom cabinet for my 1900 receiver in rayed oak, man I still have friends ask me about it everytime they stop by the house!

Because of shipping costs to/from Hong Kong, I've had very little experience actually doing deals with AKers, although I do sometimes look at the classifieds.

I did get an email out of the blue a while back from Ghog generously offering a quad LP he'd found for basically just the shipping costs, and we did that transaction. He sent it off off even before receiving my payment, and it arrived very well packed and exactly as described. A true gentleman and a smooth transaction - couldn't have asked for more!:thmbsp:

I've met only one AKer face-to-face (pbda, twice) and he turned out to be a great guy I'd be proud to call a friend. We've gone around looking at gear together, and enjoyed some audio talk over a meal.:thmbsp:

I hope to have many more opportunities to other AKers in the future, either here in Hong Kong or back in the States.

If anyone can figure out a cheap "pony express" variation between Hong Kong and the States, I think I would do a lot of dealing (both directions) with AKers... any strong swimmers or rowboaters around here? :headscrat :D

I've bought from members; both face to face and through the mail. It has always been a pleasure. Great group of people here.
