What was the quality pecking order??? Vitopanch 03-08-2007, 08:24 PM willowrun, There are 11 lines of what are generally referred to as vintage Infinities. The RS B was the second from the top in that line, the Reference Studio Monitor being top dog of that line. It is a good line with good loudspeakers. Other than one of the 11 lines, the quality is equal amoungst the other ten. Each line starting from the first progressed through the technologies and market prices and maintained high quality. After the founders were gone, the focus of the company changed but continue to produce fine loudspeakers. The RS B can not be compared to flagship loudspeakers of course but is a fine representative of a moderate priced Infinity. I posted in the WANTED section. WTB old Infinity speakers. I got a reply from a guy about 25 min. away. He said he had a set of the RSb's didnt think they were working,no grills and the speakers were shot. I showed up and gave him 25.00. I just pluged them into my SX-1250. all drivers work, The woofers need refoamed(no foam at all) the cabs are a little scuffed up but not bad.On the crossovers I think I have an issue there though. The midrange dial is stuff and ruff in movement on both speakers. the tweeter dial is smooth. Anybody have any experiance in this?I thought abought refoaming my self. I watched the vidio on this web site but they show cutting out the dust cover. Will I still cut out the bullet shaped cover on these? And then use the new diferent type included in kit?:scratch2: Thanks Tim Kencat 03-12-2007, 08:18 PM On the crossovers I think I have an issue there though. Check it out..http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=100365 With special dustcaps, you don't want to blow them away. There is a way to refoam without doing that. It is perhaps a bit more risky, and dependent on one's "handyness" with mechanical things. If you can visualize the voice coil sitting in the gap between pole and magnet, then you can feel that all is well as the glue is setting up by pushing and pulling gently on the cone feeling for any rubbing and adjusting accordingly. Others have another technique of using the applied voltage of a test tone or music to the voice coil while gluing down the foam to the frame. I haven't done this myself. For the pots. I don't know if the RSb pots are the same as the Quantums, but the Quantums were easily disassembled and cleaned after removing from the crossover circuit. Should be pictures in a thread here somewhere of the pots. |
