The other one was getting a bit long so I wanted to start a new one as this gets close to becoming a reality. Thor have you tried a 15"er on for size and are you willing to pay the extra $$ it would cost you?
Have to contacted your brother about the screens and when do you plan on starting construction?
Have you worked out how you are going make a baffle that is curved on one side and flat on the other for mounting the tweeters inside the kegs?
I know your busy, am not pushing you but am looking for an update.

No I think a 12" er will do, my brother has no idea what those are but he said he would look into it, Next payday I will be getting the other keg so I will have two and if we decide on a woofer I can cut the holes out, and I am still thinking about how to do the tweeter thing.

You mean this project isn't completed yet???

I've read of world wars that were over quicker then this pipe dream. :D

Lefty I went thru a long period of unemployment so I had to put the project on hold until I got a job, which I did recently and now the dream continues ;)

Thor trace the curve of a keg and cut out an 8" wide piece out of some thin ply or something laying around.
The next time you go past the hardware store stop by and check the curve against the curve of one of those hard rubber hand sanding blocks

Check out the Pioneer A301R 50-51F at Parts Express and see what you think. I don't know what you are going to use to drive these with but the butyl surrounds aught to last a long time considering how they will be used and the fact about the down firing.

Ok I can't tonight tho too hot and tired, I will tho.

Thatch, Thor, I've looked at those Pioneer's. I think they meet all the parameters mentioned for the Kegger X-1 project.
Should have decent!!? (wow) extension low, and should be able to go high enough to crossover comfortably with the EMIT.
Could probably use a simple xover, too.
Thatch, what're y'thinkin' as a baffle to mount the driver and mate with the keg?
I'm thinking something should 'decouple' the metal of the keg and the woofer ...

I have been thinking about that and am not sure that it is something that can be worried about since the driver will have to be bolted to the keg. Some damping would help but the bolts are going to be great at conducting vibration. I would think a bead of silicone would work as well as most anything and is low cost.
I am of the opinion that the whole keg needs to be damped and that the pair can be done for about $40. If not properly damped they are going to sound like crap no matter what is mounted to them.

That looks like a good woofer. I will be ordering a few surround repair kits within the next couple months and could order a couple of extra 12" speaker gaskets for the kegs. I will check the rubber block thingy out when I go to the hardware store next week to buy the parts to fix my loose woofers problem with my CV's.

A thought. How about using that spray-on bed liner inside the keg? Something like that should serve as a base to begin damping resonances?

Tell us more.
My best one so far for deadoning was a used to be aviation deadoner that I think lost the right to sell to avionincs and is now going after the hot water heater business. Thick semi felted cloth at better than1/4 inch thick, outer layer is quilted aluminum/plastic. Glue it to inside of keg completely with foil side out to trap sound waves, cover with smallest bubble bubble wrap and then use thick foams inside to soak uo highs and defeat any standing wave foolish enough to try!
Home Depot sells the hot water blankets for $20 for a 4'X8' sheeet, bubble wrap is free to $10 for the pair, and the stuffing is to be avoided if possible. I think the kegs are plenty large for those drivers, and stuffing will make them seem larger to the drivers.

What has struck me, the kegger is aluminum. There will be problems similar to taming the resonances in a car.
Looking through the partsexpress catalog, they have several products for damping car doors, etc.
Then I thought, mebbe that stuff sold at the car parts places might be similar, and cheaper, too. Mebbe even Walmart might sell stuff like undercoat or bedliner spraycans.
That felt stuff, though, sounds like an idea. I was trying to think of the cost, and what might work and cost the least.

does that kinda explain what i was thinking?

I am not sure but I think the kegs are stainless steel not aluminum, I believe they cost the beer companies a couple of hundred bucks to buy that is why there is a deposit on them and most places won't just sell you an empty keg for the price of the deposit.

The last Bud keg I saw was either polished stainless or had been chromed. And I have been mistaken about saying "Damping." It should be deadoning.
Trying to sound proof is hard and can be expensive. That is why I got so excited about the 4'x8' sheet of deadoner I found in Home Depot for $20. This is some serious stuff that was developed to insulate the inside of airplane cabins. It is an energy trap as it was for acoustic and thermal insulation.
A layer of this stuff to deaden and a layer of eggcrate to dampen should take care of it.
Thor, to get all the eggcrate you want for free go to the hospital and talk with a head nurse. They use these things all the time and then they go in the trash. You want to get one that someone that needed an appendectomy or something used. That is why you get with a head nurse. You don't want just anybody's eggcrate!!
The deadoner could be glued on using auto undercoat, and since it is covered with aluminum I guess you could use undercoat to glue the eggcrate on too.
If I was doing it I would use undercoat for a few layers and use the last layer as glue for the deadoner, then use a spray adhesive and glue on a layer of bubble wrap. Then hot glue the eggcrate into place.

Thor,
If I didn't love you so much I would just have to take you out of Angela's possibly slightly damp dreams.
I love/hate it when I laugh too hard!

Y'all just know the big galoot would be fun to party with! :D

I think you've got a great solution to the 'damping' problem.
You're comment about the volume of the keg, I think we're really looking at an 'infinite baffle' situation.
With the stated Fs of the Pioneer driver mentioned, that shouldn't be a problem. 19 Hz!
I think the big technical problem is the physical one concerning the mounting of the EMIT, and xover. Even that shouldn't be too difficult, the Pioneer should reach high enough, and the EMIT low enough to let a simple xover sound good.

??

Oh, forgot.
Cutting through the double-wall of the keg.
How about using some of that expandable foam caulking? Or, d'you think that would be to porous? Could seal the foam caulk with RTV?

just spending way to much time on this, since y'all have had most of the good ideas.

The keg is double walled??? Somebody need to splain dis to me.

THOR

Double walled?? I think the most difficult thing is gonna be installing everything using the hole for the 12" ers, gonna be tight getting my big ape arms down in there ;) But I don't wanna make any more holes for access or nothing.

P.S. Bully you see what those mitsu meters went for  $135.50 Ouch! Thats an amp for christsakes! 100 was my limit! Dammit!

I dunno, just had a thought they were?? Must have turds for brains. my bad. if it's not the OS, just blame me (I think taking the blame is in my job description).

Yeah, Thor, I told ya *somebody* wants those puppies!
I've bid on 'em before, and never came close. Ouch, indeed.

BTW, goll-durnit, these big Utah's really sound nice. I'm just flabbergasted somebody prolly "bosed" 'em! Big 'uns would be tuff to 'coordinate' with a room.
Good for me hahahahahahaha
