hello,
i just bought my first McIntosh pre and power amp (c-28 & mc-250). i spent about $700 for both. after a initial listen, it was very difficult sound to accept for it had too much dynamics.....unlike what my ears were used to. i always thought softer yet detailed sound of fisher tube gears were ideal sound for my ears. after the first few hours of listen, i just simply couldn't go back to my fisher receivers and sansui's. i was HOOKED!!! i may get tired of this tonal roller coaster that McIntosh presents, but wow, talk about that extra BAM and WHUMP!
i'm wondering, do Mc's tube gears have this same characteristic yet with "tube sound"? if yes, then tube Mc's must be the ultimate sound many are after.
how would you, Mc lovers, describe McIntosh sounds compared to other brands? for example fisher, sansui, pioneer, or ampex?
thank you for any inputs.

The 250 is a superb amp. Very tube sound.

Congratulations!
Great price for those two pieces and a fine match! You'll be in love with these!
I have a 250....SWEET sound, very tube-like.
I also have the MC225 tube amp and a pair of MC30 tube amps....unbeatable in my estimation!
You'll get even more dynamics with a newer McIntosh preamp...I had a 28 and it was very nice but when I got a 32 the sound really opened up....great solid state pairing with the 250. I now use a tubed MX110 for my preamp...lovely! Terry DeWick refurbed all my tube pieces and they are beauties! With the age of the 28 and 250 you may consider getting them serviced to be on the safe side with these fine units.
Welcome to the never ending McQuest.....

Hi, all a rookie question, I am about to receive a new one from mac within 10 days, I have been buying used cd's at least one a day in preparation for this, and was wondering are there any really hard and fast rules about breaking in a new tube amp? Was going to call Mcintosh and ask them too. SO looking forward to this.. Hey I love "cool" jazz, can anyone make any cd recommendations too, jazz or classical ect. Or just some wild recordings...
Thanks
Mark

Regarding break-in, just turn it on and listen to your favorite music. It's good out of the box, and just gets better. For Jazz, some of my personal favorites include Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson (with Ray Brown), Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck ( the epitomy of "Cool Jazz"), Stan Getz, Miles Davis, etc, etc. For something really different try Pink Martini "Hang On Little Tomato". The way I have discovered good jazz is to find a few musicians that I like and then look at who they have played with over the years and then listen to them and others that they have played with. It branches out in all kinds of directions. A great place to start though is with Ray Brown. Your preferences may differ, but the same method will work for any style of music. Of course there are books that rate different jazz recordings too. Good Luck,
Bill

Masterlu-
Do you have Big Phat Band "Swinging for the Fences" and will it play in the MCD201? Appears to be a CD/DVD flip.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it will play in the MCD201. It is however a 5 channel SACD as well (sounds incredible in the MVP871). Big Phat Band also has a redbook CD out. Buy that one too!
Get Big Phat Band's XXL SACD as well. Simply Amazing! My Highest Rating *****

I would say...for the solid state gear:
Accurate, clear, yet easy on the ears--a well rounded sound...and...robust.

Don't forget Pink Martini's Sympathique album which preceeded Hang on little Tomato :music:
I was introduced to this CD by a friend who kept laughing at the track "Donde Estas Yolanda?" because Yolanda in Cantonese sounds like the words for 'You have a big PENxx" :D
