View Full Version : Adolescent cats, a question for cat owners

The cat is not quite two-years-old.
He has periods of some extreme goofy doofusness. I suspect this is normal?
I don't mind, of course, and I get a kick out of his obvious enjoyment doing weird things-- like scrambling underneath the throw rug, or wrestling with the rug, or climbing into a box.
Then there are these strange sprints through the house and down to the family room?
Name my cat? He's a medium-hair pure black little former-tom.
I've just called him 'the cat' because I didn't think I would keep him. He adopted the late, great Roxie the boxer, and moved in with us.

It's normal til they get old. My sister uses the term"kitty olympics"
for this. Very entertaining! At least until they knock something over. You could call him Tom for the good old days.;)

'Kitty olympics' that's great.
I'm glad he came in with us, 'cause I really miss the old boxer girlie.
How quickly we become attached to our little friends.

Our cat does that sometimes. he gets really excited and starts going crazy. he has stopped doing it now, but before he would come up and like attack me or anyone, just walk by and he will stalk you then run and jump up off you lol.
Bully,
If you plan to keep this one I'd recommend that you get his balls snipped (neutered). I paid the vet to do this (spay/neuter) to both mine early on and it really made a noticeable difference in improving their house manners. They are now middle aged but still very playful. The activity you report sounds healthy normal to me.

Rob, i thought you were a more DIY type of guy!
How hard can it be! just cut em off and get your solder iron to cauterise it. :p:
Haoleb,
I thought about it and decided it was critically important that my cats still like me afterwards. :D

Yep, they all sound like normal cat antics. Best thing to do is sit and watch the show:lurk:

Oh, yeah, when I moved I took him to the vet's for a few days. His FIRST vet visit. Got all the shots and everything his original nerdly person didn't do. Yes, he is neutered. I'm a believer in spaying/neutering pets. Darn, a couple of boxer breeders REALLY gave me heck when they found out Roxie was spayed (she was very nearly a perfect bitch boxer, I kid you not).
The cat, like I said, was originally the upstairs neighbor's kitty. (I lived in a duplex apartment). When the kitty was still pretty darn little, the guy throws him outside.
Cat was really, really wary. But, he began to come out to Roxie and me when we were out in the yard. Roxie had known a lot of cats, and wasn't a cat chaser (a surprise, for a boxer). Plus, by this time she was very old.
Before last winter, when it began to get cold-- hey, it was last October, one of the coldest on record hereabouts-- I began to let him come into the house.
He was a mostly outside cat, coming in to eat and nap was about all.
After moving in here, and his visit to the vet, he has NOT wanted to go outside. He does like to go out on the deck, so I leave the sliding door open (that won't last much longer). No way off the deck except a long way down. He's a mean little chit, though, so I don't know why he's not keen on going outside. Guess he thinks it is pretty nice inside.
The cat still doesn't come around anyone else. He'll mellow.
It is a hoot to watch him goof around. He would try and get Roxie to play!

Sounds like normal Cat behavior to me :)
My two 7 year old (neutered) males have calmed down quite a bit
in their old age but when an outdoor cat comes to the window or screen door the Siamese will totally flip out, turn into a Tasmanian Devil, and attack the other indoor cats and even growl at me!
Frightning to see really, the wild beast is still there somewhere!
Otherwise they are very sweet.
I have a 1.5 year old Female that I caught (Feral) when she was about 6 weeks old.
Shes perfectly content to live inside but she's not very trusting and rarely lets me touch her. She geta along with the other two OK though.

I had a cat that would go effing crazy for about 15 minutes after eating a cricket. Others chomp on the great big flying cockroaches the inhabit this area (palmetto bugs in Florida) and get goofy. Some times I think a flea bites on on the ass and they go flying around for a couple of miutes. Playing seems to be great for them that are playfull to begin with and will go on for years.
A couple of ours are into the fake mice that rattle big time and play with them daily. All of ours are inside/outside kitties that use 2 pet doors to move through the garage. The bringing in of live animals to play with till dead is a pain, but that is the way cats do things. One used to bring in the afore mention cockroaches at the rate of 2 or 3 a night. It bothered the hell out of me to keep finding these mouse sized bugs inside all the time till I caught her at it. Take it away and she would go out and catch another. That cat doesn't live here anymore.

My neighbor Ed's cat makes full-throttle passes just behind my heels, zooms up a tree, then looks back & kinda goes "N'yah, n'yah" at me. Then I'm supposed to pick him off said tree & put him on the hood of my Lincoln & let him bat at my hand for a few minutes until he has to zoom up the tree again. He has extremely important business up that tree, you understand.-Sandy G.

Please make sure he/she is declawed if you are going to allow he/she to be an inside cat.
Otherwise you will be replacing speaker grills constantly. I know they make a spray but my ex's cat would lick it off of the grills. Then proceed to exercise his claws in my grills. He ignored the scratching post.

Joe
