View Full Version : Infinity WTLC versus (as always) Column II
ajmicek 10-22-2003, 11:08 PM Alright guys, I might be able to get a pair, but shipping on these WTLC's is about 100+ bucks 'cause they're so freakin' heavy ;)
What do you think: should I get the original Wave Transmission Line Columns or hold out for another pair of Column II's? The WTLC's have that funky 360 dispersion tweeter ... weird. Opinions welcome.
I don't recall the model number, but your description makes it sound a pair I bought at an estate sale. Can't comment on th sound because the original woofers had been replaced, and, oddly enough, the tweeters had also, with a pair of Radio Shack Linneaums. But there were four spare orignal Walsh tweeters in boxes(!). The tweeter is similar to the top part of the driver in the Ohm F. an aluminum foil cone driven by what looked like the motor part of the tweeter used in the Audio Pro speakers. One of these tweeters ended up going to John Strobeen (spelling? name?) the head of Ohm Acoustics because he wanted to reverse engineer the design since paperwork had disappeared.
I think this also had the Watkins dual drive woofer, which I have read is a very rough load on amps.
If you have lots of money to use on idle pursuits, I think you ought to snap them up and report on how they sound. I'm curious.
But don't open them up if you want to keep your illusions -- the internal wiring is pitiful -- the same stuff used in phone cords. Crossover is pretty lowbrow also.
ajmicek 10-23-2003, 12:36 PM Interesting facts there. I agree, we are most likely talking about the same speaker ... WTLC pictures (http://oellerer.net/infinity_classics/WTLC/body_wtlc.html) ... telephone wire eh? Interesting build "quality". I have been so happy with the Column II's (http://oellerer.net/infinity_classics/Column_2/body_column_2.html), that I suspect either things were upgraded for the II's or I just have really really bad hearing :D
Good things to keep in mind.
One other thought, I don't think they have the dual voice coil watkins in them because they are too early. THe II's were 76,77 at the original WTLC's were before this ... since the quantum series was 77 and later (and the watkins is in those for sure) I don't think the WTLC could have had one. I agree though, amps have an interesting time when they "see" those dual voice coils.
Anyways, I don't know if I have a lot of money to use on this "idle" pursuit so I'll check out the deal further ...
Interesting pictures. The speakers I had were different. The walsh tweeter was partially enclosed by the cabinet sides -- there were cutouts, but still quite alot of wood to reflect sound. The top was replaceable -- there was a solid panel and a cut out grill type panel. And the midrange was a dome, mounted with the faceplate diagonally -- a diamond rather than a square. And the woofer was front mounted.
I must say that the woofer in the pictures does not look like an infinity woofer -- could it be a replacement?
Thanks for posting the pictures.
ajmicek 10-23-2003, 02:04 PM Which speakers look like it's not an infinity woofer? I would say the column II one's look a little fishy
Wardsweb 10-23-2003, 02:10 PM Gee, guess where some of those pics came from...they are mine.

I use these in my home theater as the surrounds. Yes the woofers have been replaced, as the originals needed refoaming. I didn't want to waste my time on such small speakers, so I upgraded.
ajmicek 10-23-2003, 02:13 PM I know your tastes are pretty discrimnating, Wards - after all I read your sub construction pages a while ago - and rear surrounds is exactly what I had intended to use these WTLC's for ... are you happy with them? Thanks!
Alex
Don C 10-23-2003, 02:29 PM Hey Wards, the "home" link on your WTLC page is spelled wrong, so it goes to a typosquatter page. You might want to fix that.
Wardsweb 10-23-2003, 03:13 PM Thanks DonC, I've fixed it. Gee, been that way for years. Guess no one goes to my site or they never click home.
Wardsweb 10-23-2003, 03:19 PM For surrounds, these work great and I guess are somewhat overkill, but then you know me "bigger is better", at least for my home theater system. They will require more power than little surround speakers but will give you more depth. The 360 degree tweeter also helps to avoid making these directional speakers. This works well in a surround environment. Your not held to a "sweet spot" when placing these. I think you will like them.
Wardsweb 10-23-2003, 03:22 PM I need to get you a better pic but this will give you some gauge at the moment. The Infinities are just out of site. They sit on either side of the couch next to the table you see at the bottom right coner of this pic.

ajmicek 10-23-2003, 06:53 PM yes i have drooled over that picture times before - furniture/speakers/tv/all fits well together. all right - i'll how much this guy wants for them and get back to you guys. thanks for the info!
ps: how's the bass? obviously not compared to your massive subs ... but in general?
cmk59 02-07-2009, 07:54 PM Wards,
I just picked up a set of WTLC's for MY back-channel (Carver Amazing Silver MKll's in front), and in looking at YOUR WTLC's, it looks like foam peanuts in your Walsh driver? Am I drinking? (The foam in mine-just bought-is crumbling and I'm thinking should be replaced.
