Bear with me:
I am a big fan of rock, jazz, etc, but I have never really explored classical or similar genres. I recently saw a live performance of Rhapsody in Blue (I know not classical, but not rock or jazz either) and I was enthralled. It was one guy playing piano with no other accompaniment and it sounded fantastic.
I love the sound of piano and upright bass (double bass). Can anyone recommend a particular favorite album featuring just these two instruments playing music other than jazz? I know it a stretch but there is a great deal of knowledge on this forum. Thanks.

I don't know of anything quite like what you are looking for, but Claude Bolling (piano) did put out an album with Yo-Yo Ma of piano and cello music (probably drums, too).

Wow, I don't have a clue, at least not in the world of classical music. But then again, I'm somewhat of a novice regarding the genre.
However, if you like unaccompanied piano then give any of Chopin's Etudes, Preludes, Nocturnes, Ballades, Scherzos, Pollonaises, Waltzes, Impromptus or Mazurkas a try. They come in different combinations and on many different labels. For instance, there's a very nice SACD hybrid from the RCA Living Stereo series of Chopin's Ballades with Arthur Rubenstein available.

Listen to public radio!! You'll get a good daily dose of all sorts of classical music that will give further avenues to explore.

BTW, Rhapsody In Blue is considered classical.

BTW, Rhapsody In Blue is considered classical.
But was originally written as a jazz piece.
There are two versions...
List/Kunzel/Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
Tritt/Kunzel/Cincinnati Jazz & Pops Orchestra
Both on Telarc.
