I just had to look this up, given the last name.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Joao Gilberto from that famous Stan Getz collaboration. After that, I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to Brazilian music.
Sounds interesting Ocean.

Don't forget Astrud! I love that 60s Brazilian bossa-nova and samba.
And Bebel's more contemporary stuff is great too!

You might want to try Cibelle. Her album last year "The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves" has become one of my favorites. Marisa Monte is always a good choice as well, especially the Tribalistas album which won a Grammy

And there are so many others good musicians that are not recognized by by brazilian media "owners". They prefer to sell the crapiest "music" ever "produced".:puke:
Obviously, they sell to zillions that haven't a chance to know good music.

I have Bebel's first CD, but not the most current--it's a great CD. I bought this along with Joao's current acoustic guitar CD at that time (2 or 3 years ago, I think). Joao's CD is rather short, but REALLY wonderful.
I also recommend Antonio Carlos Jobim's last CD: Passarim. Paulo Jobim and many others play on this CD and it is just beautiful. Do get the CD version as there are EXTRA tracks and the Portugese version of "It Looks Like December" is just exquisite--gets me all misty when I listen to it.

Is this Astrud pictured w/Stan and Joao?
No credit given on this : "Stan Getz, "The best of Two Worlds" 1976
I've searched Wikipedia with no luck.

No it is not Astrud. The singer is Heliosoa Buarque de Holland.
Astrud and Joao were split up by then.

The right name is Heloisa Maria Buarque de Hollanda, but she is known as "Miucha".

Right on, ggarcia. My own favorite Brazilian artisits are Zé Ramalho, Lula Côrtes, Alceu Valença, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethana, the incomparable Rita Liee and the group Os Mutantes. Also highly recommended is Paêbirú, a Ramalho & Côrtes collaboration from 1975.

Yep. One of my favorite lounge LPs is Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour on Verve. Walter Wanderley's piano and organ playing is all over this album.

Not to hijack the thread, but just curious if any S. American AKer's are familiar with the Costa Rican band Editus. I saw them in a jazz club in San Jose a few years back and they put on a truly excellent show, but seems they are pretty much unknown in the states. The Costa Rican guitar wizard Strunz even sat in with them for a few tunes in that show. I should have bought some of their music there, because I've not been able to find anything here (well- there IS one used cd on Amazon right now for $125, and that ain't going to happen).
