Nice list of tunes. I bought a Nacho Sotomayor CD from eBay and paid something like $10 total. It shipped from Germany.

When I got it there was an "Amoeba Cleanance" price tag of $2.95 on it.

Good luck on the search and move.

yea, i get annoyed at similar experiences - buying a cd for 5 or 8 bucks, then seeing it later for 2! and having it be something like Belly's 'Star', which i liked when it was released 15 yrs. ago but have only listened to once since getting it again.

...list of cds i'm looking for. i have heard some, haven't heard others...

big star --> I recommend #1 Record & Radio City

faine jade - introspection --> A surprising choice. You might also be
interested in Bohemian Vendetta, the
NY snot-punk psych band that backed
Faine on "Introspection"

golden dawn - power plant --> The 2002 reissue on the Sunspots label has
excellent sound quality

music emporium - s/t --> Are you familiar with the Relatively Clean Rivers?
Made an album similar in some ways to this one.

teenage fanclub - songs from northern britain --> A good one; their album
Bandwagonesque is also
quite good

trad gras & stenar - ajn schajn draj --> A surprising choice, pretty obscure.

the trees community - box set, christ tree --> This is an excellent record.
I have an original vinyl copy
but ordered the new CD set
from the band. For once we
have a psych reissue that
is legit, ie, not a boot issued
Radioactive, etc.

gainsbourg - vu de la exterior --> I think this is Serge Gainsbourg's album
"Vues de l'exterieur", which not only
has Jane Birkin aboard, but also others
like France Gall, Fracoise Hardy, Nico,
Mirielle Darc, Catherine Deneuve, Regine,
Anna Karina, Charlotte Gainsbourg & more.
Almost forgot Brigitte Bardot! I don't think
the song "Bonnie & Clyde" is on this album,
at least it isn't on my copy. BTW, the
song "Bonnie & Clyde" is a collaboration
b/w Gainsbourg & Bardot, not Birkin.

thanks, mystic. of the gainsbourg recs. that i have, i like histoire de melody nelson best. somebody gave me a cd full of crap-quality mp3s of almost everything he did, but i don't listen to it, due to the sound-lack-of-quality.

sometimes i see bandwagonesque cheap. allmusic.com says 'northern brit' is their best, but their opinions aren't always the most reliable. in 93 or 94, i had TF's strange fruit, but i didint' like it at the time.

everybody who has heard the trees community says it is great, but i am afraid of buying it for some reason.

same w/ catherine wheel's ferment.

often the things that i am leery of turn out to be favorites (friend had to work hard to get me to listen to simon finn's pass the distance, but when i did, i couldn't get enough of it for more than a year.)

You can hear a great cut from Tree Community at www.theunbrokencircle.co.uk . That is what decided it for me. I had trouble navigating that site but I'm a senior and have been at computers for only two years. The Simon Finn is on there also and have listened to a few cuts but it hasn't clicked yet.

I love "histoire de melody nelson", I just wish there was more of it to listen to. Really, that entire LP plays in about 18 minutes.

TFC's Bandwagonesque was released on the Creation label, I think? Well worth tracking down, if only MP3 version so that you can try it out before seeking an original vinyl or legit CD copy.

Cantabury:

The 4CD set I have was purchased from the remaining Trees Community members, who have established a web site to sell not just the reissued Christ Tree album on their own "Hand/Eye" label. Besides the Christ Tree album, the community are offering a variety of other projects from the community's members, including "Stone Breathe", "Moth Masque" and a gospel of "Timothy, Revelator". You can read all about this stuff here:

http://www.somedarkholler.com/HandEyeDiscography.html

Hm, it appears that the 4CD set is sold out, but they are planning a "single CD" version release soon.

mystic, i have trad, gras och stenar's '71 live lp. i liked it when i listened on my own. but then my girlfriend drove me down to san jose - to deliver a pair of non-functional boston acoustic a-70s and a non-func onkyo receiver to reEdger and i played it, as well as jackie-o-motherf###er's change. i have this weird music empathy, where i don't enjoy stuff if the person i'm with doens't enjoy it. so i didn't like t, g o. s w/ her

I have several of the disks on your list but the one name I was surprised to see is Glass Harp. I have been messing around with Pandora and they have the Live at Carnegie Hall album at least in the library. I saw Phil Keaggy about 4 years ago at a local church by himself and was completely blown away. That is when I heard of Glass Harp for the first time. From what I have heard so far on Pandora, I am about to order from Amazon.

I'm not bored, so I only took a quick look at your list, if I have time later, I'll go through it more thoroughly, but two things I thought I'd point out.

Blue Oyster Cult have an album by the name of "Tyranny and Mutation" that came out just before Secret Treaties -- it's a great album by the way -- is that what you may have been refering to?

There is a band/group/project whose name is, and have an album by the name of, Bright Black Morning Light (or maybe Brightblack Morninglight, you may want to try all variations) -- is that what you may have been refering to?

I would recommend half.com and amazon.com's used section for some of those.

cicero2
04-10-2007, 10:54 AM
dusty chalk, yes on both of those.

wondering if you are into noise (from your signature) i like some (otomo yoshihide, merzbow, etc)

Dusty Chalk
04-10-2007, 04:19 PM
L, yeah -- not a big fan of Merzbow for some reason, but I love K.K. Null, Paul Lemos & Controlled Bleeding, and I do have a couple of Merzbow disks, as well as a couple disks in the Dry Lungs series. I am also interested in some more experimental musics like vidnaObmana/fearFallsBurning, Desiderii Marginis and the "...of Drones" series of compilations (Swarm of Drones, Throne of Drones).

But no -- "noise floor" is audio terminology, it refers to that level of noise generated by equipment when there's nothing else playing (sort of -- that's an oversimplification, but that's a good way to remember it), and dancing on it is impossible, so that's just sort of a funny thing to say.

Order a copy of Mekons Rock N Roll as soon as you can. Just a great, little known, record. Play it loud, too.

And if you don't have Doolittle by the Pixies (I'm guessing you do since you don't have any Pixies listed) order that too. This is better known but still under the radar for alot of folks.

cicero2
04-10-2007, 06:46 PM
yes, i have most pixies stuff (except the first ep that i can't recall the name of, trompe le monde, and the b-sides collection - though i used to have many of the 12")

for some reason, songs from trompe having been floating thru my head

not sure about the mekons, i've heard some a while ago. wasn't crazy about it except for the song 'cocaine lil'

quite a few of the entries on my list are iffy. i would like to hear them first, but never get around to sampling mp3s on line.

because my list gets a lot of entries from times that i am bored and looking at record reviews on allmusic and rateyourmusic (and because i'm OCD when it comes to music), i have things on my list that i never actually shop for. but maybe they are good.

american music club - everclear.

recently found their cd 'san francisco' in the clearance bin. fairly good, but i don't think i'll listen to it very often

the association - the association's greatest hits

A.R. Kane - 69, "i"

badfinger greatest hits or ?

blood sweat and tears - son is the father

curt boetcher - there's an innocent face

booker t - green onions, hip hug-her, melting pot

canned heat - the very best (capitol, v. 1)
read that they did their best to sound like howlin' wolf. i love howlin' wolf, but not sure if i would love a pale (pardon the pun) imitation.

collins, phil - face value
this is a lot better than his other stuff? ashamed to admit that i love the song 'in the air tonight'

speaking of 'in the air tonight', what about union carbide production's lp 'in the air tonight'? (nothing to do w/ the collins release)

dag nasty - field day
some critic insists that this is great. back in 10th/11th grade, when i was way into bad religion, i didn't like dag nasty much. but i didn't hear this one.

dead milkmen - big lizard in my backyard
maybe i'm too old for this sort of thing

the godz
is '2' better than 'contact high with . . .'?

A decent list, I'll send other comments later, but this one about Canned Heat & Wolf made me stop short. I love Canned Heat & have the utmost respect for what Bob Hite and (especially) Al Wilson did for blues music & for the 60s blues revival, but I think that you would indeed find them to be a pale imitation of the Wolf's music. Hite was huge man and maybe he moved around the stage a little like Wolf, but he didn't sing or sound like him. Canned Heat can & should be approached and accepted on their own merit, for they were a very good band. I don't think there is or was a combination of any two persons who could perform & sound like Chester Burnett backed by Hubert Sumlin's guitar. (those Willie Dixon songs didn't hurt any, either)

Magnetic Fields (aka Stephen Merritt) did a trio of albums collectively called 69 Love Songs and his most recent album under the Magnetic Fields moniker is "i" -- perhaps that's what you mean, not A.R.Kane?

Yeah, that first Phil Collins is easily his best -- I remember the first time I heard "In The Air Tonight" -- I thought it was Peter Gabriel (in the best way).

dustychalk - again an allmusic thing, listed 'i' as an A R Kane lp. when 69 love songs was released i was working at an indy rec. store. some guy came in and bought 3 or 4 copies of that box set. the owner was so shocked that he dropped the food that was in his hand. love the song 'deep sea diving suit'

And no offense taken, just sticking up for a good (and often ridiculed) band. So the comment was in the All Music Guide? Okay, I'm off for a quick read, I'll be back soon.............................................. ................................................
.............. Back. Read the Allmusic review, written by Cub Koda, R.I.P. Koda was a good Michigan boy and I do like some of Brownville Station stuff. So, let's go ahead and let "Canned Heat" sound like Howlin' Wolf.

On to you list.

Godz - I prefer Contact High, one of the pinnacles of ineptitude, recorded. Maybe you should also be checking out The Shaggs' Philosophy of the World?

Millennium - Begin is Curt Boetcher's (& Gary Usher's) masterpiece. Not great psych, but not bad for a "studio band" effort (quite similar to the Sagittarius album on your list)

Music Emporium - Yet another "studio band" psych effort, but this one's a private label release and much better than the major label equivalents: strong songwriting, guitars, female (& male) vocals and cool organ tones. Recommended.

Link Wray - Don't know or have ready access to this Rhino-issued "best of" collection, but a most Rhino releases are of good quality and I'll bet their "Link" collection is a good 'un.

All for now - edwin

Bob Seger....a few good tunes with Ramblin Gamblin Man my favorite. Its also one of the oldest
Tommy James & Shondells....a greatest hits album is WELL worth getting, I like several of their songs, like Mirage, I Think We're Alone Now, Crystal Blue Persuasion and others
Turtles...again, a greatest hits is worth getting. I have the one put out by Rhino on vinyl. You Baby being my favorite song.
Badfinger, again a greatest hits is worth getting, but make sure it has Baby Blue.
