Geez, I hope someone grabs these. You hardly ever see the 90s- in fact, the only pair I personally know of are Kelly's (KFA888s) pair.

He says they are close to the 9s- very close. Just a tad smaller.

If not for my AR 9LSis, I'd be scrambling and pulling all favors to land these, no hesitations.

Bolly- I got a pair of those AR9LSis already- no room for the 90s.

But someone out there who really wants great sound for a nice price should get these- I'm sure you won't be dissappointed.

I'd value these at no less than $300, easily I'd pay $400 for these, and I'd not blink if someone picked them up for $600-$800.

I did score my AR 9LSis for less than that, thanks to a few friends, however they have foam rot, and the grills look fair to good. The wood on 'em, however, looks nice.

I spent about 4 hours with some 9s at the fest, and just acquired some 9LSs - I'm not sure the 9s are much of a step up, if any. They are more attractive though.

They'll probably need refoaming, if they haven't had it already... but at an average of $35 or so each to do 10" refoams by most shops, and $30 each for 8" (the front woofers). that's only $200 in repairs. That, plus $200, is STILL a good deal for AR90s! I sold my pair for $400, and the guy was ECSTATIC to get them...

If you can do the refoams yourself, it's a REAL STEAL... even if ALL the drivers need refoaming!

Just be sure the dome mids and dome tweeters all work... rest of it is pretty easy to fix...

If they were closer, I'd probably cave in and grab them at that price. It's too good to pass on these.

But I'm not going after them.

Tarior, what don't you like about the 9LSi model? I'd be curious to hear your impression of them. And have you heard them with the 9s or 90s? What was the big difference? I'm honestly interested in your opinion.:thmbsp:

The issue is definately placement for me.

I imagine the 9LSis, or 9LSs with the LSi mods to retard the forward midrange issue that some complained about on them, are very close to the holy grail 9s.

Except where your mids were rebuilt, Wank, maybe this forward midrange issue was resolved.

The LSis being easier to place- well, that's worth it to me.

That's interesting to hear. They get a bit of a bad rap due to that midrange faux pas they were first shipped with.

Once you veneer the front of yours, they'll look quite nice. The 9LSis came with veneer front and are very presentable with the grills off.:yes:

I don't have them here yet, but I imagine the DQs will continue to hold court as king with Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Nick Cave's slower stuff, Neko Case, Holly Cole, most classical (besides tympanis and deep church/pipe organ), ect.

The 9LSis will be the darling for stuff like Nick Cave's rockier tunes, classical with tympanis and church/pipe organs, David Lee Roth era Van Halen, and the like.

I must say, I'm pretty thrilled with my amassed collection. There are very few speakers I'd even consider adding at this point.

And the DQs and ARs are the stars of the show.

I'm very pleased with my AR9s, they shine even with jazz and vocal heavy music, stuff where huge dynamic range isn't so critical.
I don't think I would stack two pair of AR9s, but I would disperse them around in an array. With lots of amplification!:banana:

Your setup looks pretty nice.
I thought my recently aquired 9s were a little too forward, and not nearly as pleasant as the ones I sold (:tears:) a couple of years ago. Then I changed my speaker wires from really cheapo 18 ga wire to some quality 10 ga stuff. They really smoothed out, I changed the settings on the front of the speaks from the -3db position back to flat and now they are just about perfect. Previously, I never would have believed that the wires could have made that much difference, but now, I'm about ready to start a thread in TOL.

AR9's are fun! I had a pair for a long time. Used to clip the Marantz 2500 I had back then big time. What a dirty power piece that was. :nono:

I lived in NH and I'd have to trek down to RT.138 in Canton MA where AR was located at the time to get new upper mids and tweeters. Finally I dumped the Marantz and biamped the 9's with a pair of Carver M1.5t's....well
that didn't work either....the 9's were a tough load and would smoke the Carvers. For a while I was on a first name basis with the parts people at AR.

On to plan "C".......1987........ Hafler's wonderful DH500 kits. First I built one, then another....then upgraded to a pair of Hafler XL600's. Never a problem with these Haflers and the 9's....

I learned a valuable lesson those years ago. Big Iron works best. Current is King. Give me amps with big trannies and enough capacitor storage, and nothing gets hurt....unless ya add alcohol or controlled substances.

I think I will bi amp mine eventually. I have a BA 5000 kicking around the shop (buried under lesser gear actually) that would power the woofer section very nicely.
