EVEN ROACHES CRY IN WRIGLEYVILLE

The hopes were high, flags were flown, rooftops full of smiles
The blue and white took the field with confidence and style
Taverns full of baseball dreams, generations stared
As the mighty Cubs tipped their hats to Cub fans everywhere

The folks on Waveland Avenue awaited every play
The bleacher bums stood and cheered as the innings wore away
The Cubs were up and held their ground, steadfast and true
Magic Mark was in control when the 7th inning was through

Then a dire cloud appeared that seemed to rise from hell
And hovered over Wrigley field like an evil spell
What was to be a dedicated Cub fan's souvenir
Became the symbol of failures lasting nigh one hundred years

The second out of the 8th was nowhere to be found
Cub fans stared in disbelief as baseballs hit the ground
The runs piled up but everyone in Wrigley knew the score
The team was goin' down a road they'd been many times before

Time ran out, the game was over, the Cubs had come up short
They left the field a bewildered bunch, confused and out of sorts
The ballpark fell to silence, deafening and cold
The streets were filled with sadness like the passing of a soul

Yes even roaches cry in Wrigleyville when the much loved Cubbies lose
They run a little slower as if to say "nail me if you choose"
All living things in Wrigleyville know when seasons change
They know that baseball in the fall does indeed feel strange

Even roaches cry in Wrigleyville when the 3rd out is the last
One more winter, too much time to think about the past
