Thanks -- I did some reading on the various sites for AR mods, and made some mental notes. This particular arm (the Grace) interfaces nicely with the t-chasis, and I only had to grind away some of the flanging and bore away the old arm well with a drill press. I used a 2" x 1/2" wood disk as a base for the arm where it interfaces with the chasis. As I stated in another thread, the hardest part was drilling the hole in the top deck. That took a lot of time and patience; A drill press is required for this procedure! The spikes came from amazon.com (I think), and I had them from a previous project (unused), so I attached them to the AR base plates. I used the ones you are referring to (from partsexpress) on my other AR and they work well. Old_Tech 05-08-2009, 11:49 AM Here's my newly finished AR-XA with Grace 707 tone-arm. I always wanted one but been worried about negative comments on the high mass tone arm. I like the sound very much. I think alot of people dislike the arm because it is unusual and does not feel solid and precision although I must say that the parts they grab at are supposed to move a little. The pivots themselves are very precise. The tonearm mass is medium to high not formidable. I track a Stanton 681EEE at 1.5 grams with no problems whatsoever. These arms also do well down to 1 gram if you have the right cartridge like maybe a m97xE with the dynamic stabilizer. The sound is very clear and full of detail with low noise. They are like all older tables they need to be serviced to remove the old grease from its mechanisms. I did it with goo-gone then used precision oil. No grease. It runs like a charm. Don't be afraid of buying one. They are fun to use and again they sound beautiful. Most tables have a small adjustment screw to position where the stylus will set down on the LP. It needs to move in. I don't know where it is on yours but on my ELAC and my Garrard Zero it is on the right side of the arm when viewed from the front. Makes sense. a_retent 06-05-2009, 03:05 PM ,,,on a recording medium(CD)which degrades the sound.(..........) Makes sense. It appears my logic has been perceived a tad askew when I stated: "I would love to get on cd so I don't beat up the vinyl" so please allow me to clarify. Taking into account I already own a recording of a particular artist. Why buy another recording of the same just so I can enjoy that music in my car, especially when I can record my own. Furthermore, the sound quality of a HS is better than mass produced recordings. Keep in mind HS recordings are limited pressings so all of my recordings are no longer in press (almost 30 years old). Alot of people I know don't own a TT but everyone has a CD player. Even if they did have a TT, only a couple MIGHT get one close to the same standard as all of us here appreciate, and currently enjoy. And I must say there are ALOT of very nice tables here. However, my friends do like many of my half speeds. At the risk of opening another can of worms here, putting HS recordings through an MP3 algorythm to squeeze it down for playback makes even less sense than putting it on CD in a wav file format. My last point is my half speeds have only been played on this TT with this cartridge, which was meticulously setup (geodisc, karat scale, etc), and I would rather not drag them around. Call me selfish but unless someone has an extraordinary system, I'd prefer to protect them from damage and enjoy them at home whenever and as often as I would like. My standard records...another issue altogether. I even prefer to change cartridges to reserve my quality cartridge for better pressings. So I hope I've cleared up any misunderstandings, Thank you. I'm guessing this is what actually touches the idler wheels and makes them spin. I don't want to send the machine back (I love it even broken!) if I can get a new part somewhere. I grabbed it and ran before I woke up, but when I got home, there it was in my back seat. Of course, SWMBO made the logical comment: "I thought you were reducing your collection, not adding to it..." She's right, of course, this time next year we will be in a new house in some part of Ottawa, nearer to our two kids. Inevitably, the new house will be considerably smaller, and will therefore have to contain less than is currently held here. Soooo, I have to find new homes for about 110 to 130 tube radios, at least three TTs, and all but one of the six tube radio console models I have plus various and sundry things, such as my Ferrograph Series Six R2R. The Quad equipment all stays (naturally), and maybe one pair of AR 4 speakers. Anyways, sorry, I'm rambling, this is about TTs and I am OT. Linear tracker, MMC5 cart. B&O RX - No cart, broken dustcover hinge. Luxman PD277, Nagatron 350E cart. Purchased today. Technics SL-5. AT cart of some kind. Purchased today. I'd like to have three tables for modern records (45s and 33s) - a contact line, an elliptical, and a conical. My B&Os can meet two of these needs. The Luxman can meet the third. I'd like to have a mono set up for LPs and a 78 setup. eThink 07-13-2009, 03:25 PM I own four turntables: Luxman PD-277 harman/kardon T65c Dual CS-627Q Philips GA312 I selected the Luxman PD-277 based on the direct drive design, the arm, the semi-automatic operation and the overall "minimalist" design. The PD-277 is my primary TT. I acquired this TT in AUG 2006 from a vintage stereo technician via Craigslist. It came with an AT-440ML cartridge; I have since changed the Cartridge to an Ortofon OM30. I also own a Dual CS-627Q (DD, semi-automatic) with the original Dual (Ortofon) ULM 55E. This cartridge is very similar to the Ortofon OM10. I do have a supply of NOS stylii for this propietary cartridge The Philips GA-312 (belt drive, manual) is sentimental for me, it was my first serious TT. It has an Audio Technica AT440ML Cartridge and a new belt. Unfortunately, the cueing mechanism has recently failed and will need to be repaired or replaced. I have a harman/kardon T65C (belt drive, manual) that has never been used. I purchased it at a "Going Out of Business" (Crazy Eddie) sale to go along with my collection of h/k equipment. I own 1200+ LPs (Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Soundtracks) acquired in the 1970s and early 1980s. So I never considered abandoning vinyl. softail 07-13-2009, 09:16 PM David / Phaedrus- As soon as I get a chance (and figure out how) I will post some pics. The PL-901 really is a very cool table. Macor (ceramic) platter, brass sub-platter and must weigh at least 40 or 50 lbs, ceramic bearing I think. NEVER had a problem with acoustic feedback ever with two Velodyne ULD-15's in the room. I tried years ago to get some info off the web about it, but could never translate anything useful. I used it from about 1989 thru 2001 when I got the Sota. Might be time to move it on since I haven't used it since then except to fire it up an play a few records to make sure it still works. I bought an extra motor from Kyocera years ago for back up (you know, perfect sound forever was going to take over) kenwood61 07-13-2009, 09:23 PM Out of curiosity, why have you not used the H/K T65C? Hello EasyriderNYC Got no space for more plinthed 301's:tears: I think the slate plinths look cool but I have my own isolation system going on my only plinthed 301, which works very well. An acrylic pliunth sits on 4 adjustable legs with butyl pads inside. The dustbugs? The original plastic Watts bugs I bought 4 of at different times at fleamarkets. Richgib 08-11-2009, 05:58 AM Hi, this is my first post on Audiokarma, and it relates to something I have been spending a lot of time with lately my turntables, as I dig out all my jazz and classical records from the attic. My primary table right now is an older Rega Planar 2 (glass platter) with a Denon DA-401 carbon fiber tonearm, and an ADC XLM mkII improved cartridge. I'm waiting for a Pickering XSV 3000 cartridge to come in the mail (I have a new stylus for one) and that will be my "new" (1977...?) reference cartridge. Loved my Stanton 881S that I bought new in 1977 from Tech Hi-Fi, and the Pickering is really the same cartridge, and the stylus is interchangeable between the two. My secondary turntable is a Philips 202e "electronic" that, thanks to Audiokarma, I was able to get the owner manual for. ("So that's how you set tracking force... change cartridges..." etc.) On the Philips is a shure M95ED cartridge. I still get flashbacks to my neophyte days hanging out at Tech Hi-Fi (where this whole audio passion began for me) and sneaking a touch on those "touch sensitive" glowing green rings that activated 33, 45 and start functions. I thought that was so cool... in fact, I still do. I can easily A-B both tables because I'm using an RGR Model 4 preamp with two adjustable impedance mm phono sections. The Philips still sounds very good, but it's no match for the Rega/Denon setup. Now I'm looking for an extra detachable headshell or two for my Denon DA-401 tonearm that are, of course, prioprietary to that arm. The arm has been long out of print. If anyone has an idea regarding a source for something like that, I'd appreciate a nod in that direction. Old_Tech 08-11-2009, 07:14 AM I have added a Thorens TD-145 to the system. The Philips still sounds very good, but it's no match for the Rega/Denon setup. Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading my system with a Rega P3 with the Rega arm. I tried one with a Grado Gold and it sounded quite amazing. But, I was wondering how you feel the P2 compares to the P3. There is quite a price difference and if the P2 is pretty much as good, I'd rather save the extra cash a P3 would cost and go with the P2. The local place that has these turntables only has P3's so I couldn't to a comparison. Anyway, just curious about the differences and whether or not the P3 is worth the extra cost. shimniok 08-17-2009, 02:27 PM Got the BIC 940 (above) torn down, greased up, cleaned up, and working like a champ again! As I said, I love my Mitsubishi LT-20. I think it sounds better than my Pioneer PL-570 and lots of people rave about those. It's not that the 570 is bad, it's just that I think some of the linear tracking tables are overlooked. I think mine sounds great, even after hearing a well set-up Sota or my VPI. In fact, if I had to choose between my Linn Axis and the Mistubishi, I'd take the mitsubishi just to spite all of the bad things said about linear trackers :) Danimal 09-04-2009, 02:18 AM Don't get me wrong... The TT used to be nicotine brown and now it isn't.:D It's been touched up since this pic was taken. http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww206/djohnfot/013-1.jpg I don't know why but I love the color. My 570 looks nothing like that, to say the least! My sister used to have a 1973 Cougar that exact color. We called it the smurfmobile. strobopug 09-08-2009, 03:54 PM http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6598/p1040782p.jpg My ex-nightclub Technics SL1200. I've kept up with most of the mods and still play it a lot. My records are well cared for...and the Linn keeps sounding fine. Now has the ITTOK arm and a Benz MC cartidge... danj 09-10-2009, 02:23 PM You started out with two of the best. That you knew that much in high school is astounding! My first experience with a really good turntable was at a teacher's home where I would go to do math tutoring for a couple other students. She and her husband owned a modest but very good stereo that taught me that my old record player and my mom's KLH compact were lacking. That teacher's stereo was a Fisher receiver, Fisher speakers, a Dual 1209 with Shure cartridge, and a Roberts (Akai) R2R deck. The quality sound put out by that modest but well-matched system astonished me. That would have been about 1970. I decided at that time to not waste my money on anything less. What made you go top tier at the onset? Your parents? A wise hi-fi dealer? cpmusic 09-12-2009, 12:34 AM http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6598/p1040782p.jpg My ex-nightclub Technics SL1200. I'd like to hear, too. A friend of mine had one, that he has since sold, but I never felt like I had a chance to hear what it could do because his taste in setups was so different than mine that is was hard to judge. He was running the smallest Acoustats with no sub and so all I got was that it had a pretty nice midrange and treble but couldn't tell how it handled low end impact or dynamics. norelco 09-14-2009, 08:28 PM http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a201/ronaldcorrales/DSC_1138.jpg Goldring GR 1.2 upgrade http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a201/ronaldcorrales/DSC_0803.jpg Denon DP60L :banana::banana: shimniok 09-22-2009, 10:39 AM My Realistic Lab 400 cleaned up, AT13e2 mounted to a cheapo LPGear headshell* and spinnin' a Lightin' Hopkins reissue I just received.
