Heres a short list of mine.
Thorens TD145MK
Thorens TD160
Garrard AT6
Marantz 6100
Marantz 6200
Marantz 6300
Technics SL-D2
Technics 1301
I have a few others but they are just sitting on shelves. My Favs are the Thorens Obviously followed very closely by the AT6. I have had my SL-D2 for more years than I care to admit and it has served me very well. I had to retire it to the shelf when one of the kids got to it with a marker. Lets just say I was not a happy camper at all !!!! some day I hope to have a Mitchel Gyro Deck. and maybe even an Oracle. For now I am very content with my small collection.
Dave
I've got a Systemdek IIX.
Currently has a Grado Platinum cart. and the standard arm (see other thread for help with that!)

Whatta nice collection, Grump!
I have (on the premises) the Denon DP-47F, an original one, I think from 86? mebbe 87 (they list for about twice what it was, then); the venerable Technics SL-23, a belt-drive manual table; and, in the OBM, a Fisher MT-6330, a semi-automatic, graced with a Shure V15 Type 3, mebbe 2, it has the "stabilizer" that looks like a brush. That TT has been boxed up, with a newer cartridge, since I got the Denon.
On the way are the Technics SL-1300 and the Optonica RP-4705.
I'm really glad you posted your list, G, 'cause I was beginning to think I was well off the shelf.

Some very nice vinyl spinners here!
My list:
Yamaha YP50 with Rega RB300 arm
Thorens TD160S/AT1100 arm
Sansui SR222 MkII
Luxman PD272
Quite a motley collection but luv them all.:)
Pete, I had a V15 Type IV and I thought that was the first one out with the little stabilizer brush.
Grumps, the Oracle would have to be my favourite TT outside of all the mad nose bleed - as Rich puts it - stuff.

Presently running a Marantz 6300 and a Sansui SR-838. I've probably have picked up a dozen TTs at thrift stores over the last 4 years, anything looking decent as I find I can sell them to friends at work (cost + $10 for cleanup/checkout) as there are many guys at work that still have records but no way to play them anymore. Many intend of burning them to CDRs.
Anyway vintage TTs are way cool :p:

V15 Type IV, that's the one!! When I saw that just now, bingo. I know i had replace the cartridge on the Fisher, then "not long" after that I got the Denon. Now, even then, 'not long' may have been a year or two, which it may have been, 'cause I'm thinking I got the Denon kinda like it was a replacement cartridge
But, jeepers, the cost of a replacement styli for the V15, whew!
I'm still thinkin' in like 1984 $$
I've got a Technics SL-110A. direct drive. It comes without a tonearm and I put on a long fancy Sony arm which I do not know the model number. I would guess you measure arm length from the pivot to the stylus (11") , or the total length (15") ? I run a Stanton 681EEE cartridge with the little dust brush.
Before this I ran the same great cartridge on the classic Empire belt driven turntable. I sold the Empire years ago.
Rob
Some people used to brag that they had Dual turntables (sorry, I couldn't help that) :p: but some of you like Grumpy have 8+. This sounds like plenty of emergency backup in case of a failure. :)

I don't have a list like you guys. Just an old Audiotronics(?) schoolhouse player.(used for 78s until recently) I had two-made a DIY RCM out of one.
RCA Victor 45 changer. It's a neat little tabletop not much bigger than a stack of 45s. Dark maroon bakelite. (1950s?)
The Yamaha P-520 is promised to a friend.
Technics SL1200 Three Speed -fluid damper-w/ V15VxMR - N78s for 78 playback

...just one: a Dual 1209. Got it back when I was in college, 21 years ago (geez, time flies!). I play 78's as well as vinyl and I wanted a high-quality idler wheel design rather than a belt drive or direct drive table. It's been a workhorse. All I do for maintenance is lube the turntable bearings and clean the idler wheel with alcohol every few years.
Doug E.
i have a marantz 6300. The auto off feature doesn't work. I guess that's common for these from the ebay auctions I've seen. Many don't work either.
Nice looking table but has zilch for features.

I've got a really nice Pioneer TT (can't remember the model offhand), and a Garrard AT60, which was a higher-end (but not TOTL) turntable dating to 1962. The thing I like about the Garrard is that it's real wood and real metal, unlike many of the plastic-fantastic things we see at our local thrifts.
Great sound and look, and the best part was that I paid 9.99! The $30 cartridge added a bit to the price, but it was still well worth the price of admission.

Yea Jack well, Dave saw me drolling over his recent Thorens score.
You know that I have been wheelin and dealin here and there trying to get a Thorens. Well never could find the right price and for that matter, source. Knowing Dave why this Thorens works correctly and has all parts. Also it has a nice Shure cartridge on it and Dave assures me that it is quality. I am excited! Can't wait to start applying the many easy tweeks to this table that are available on line. This puppy is gonna sing. Finally I now have a table that requires the purchase of a test record. Gawd the sound of vinyl is special and this gets me closer to doing it right!!!
Yup, mighty fine of Dave, thanks!! :)

About a year ago, I came across a mint condition Harman Kardon T60 at an Estate Sale, for $25.........well, this got me really back into the vinyl idea, which has been enjoyable for many reasons...I also found anew Grado Gold cartridge for it on the Web for $90.
Not to bore anyone, but this TT made me look hard at my meager system, and I decided that now is a very good time to get a killer older Cassette Deck, since the plastic one I had was going south anyways. Patience was rewarded when I came across(at a musician's estate sale), a mint Sansui SC-5110, for $10, which had all the bells and whistles, and of course, the real VU meters which were a must have in searching for a new/old deck.
Spurred by the sonic rewards on the cheap, that TT acquisition has recently led me to acquire a Harman Kardon 730 receiver, for $37....the dial lights are out(at present), but the unit sounds superb, and does the vinyl playback pretty good...
So for me, it's not what TT do I have, but what it's done!.....
I'm using a cherry, recently scored B&O 3404. It has an excellent, proprietary cartridge and the lightest, most delicate looking tonearm I've ever seen on a TT. This thing sounds and tracks better than any Japanese TT I've ever owned.
Sorry guys, I only have one.

Cool thread, love all the TT's. I have a Dual 1019, completely gutted of all internal automation. I have a swtich to start the motor and that's it. no auto return or nothing. I also replaced the power cord and took of the interconnects and replaced with gold plated RCA's. The cartridge is a budget Grado for now. the turntable had an empire, but i need to get a new needle for it. Oh buy the way, the TT cost me $5 cdn at Value Village (that's with the 300cdn empire cart.) and five bucks for the switch.

Here's a link to my system.http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/1340.html

With TT's, nothing too obscure with me- I have the well-known Technics SL-D2 which I like alot. Bought it new as a teenager and it always has ran 100%. Wish I had taken better care of it as I do with all my stuff now, in that the some parts of the finish are discolored and the dustcover hinges in the back snapped off. I havent really used it much in the last ten years since I went over to the "CD-zone". I would like to set it up again and see how all my 'ol albums sound, does anyone have any recommendations on what a good cartridge for this model would be- would something like a Grado ZCE+1 be okay?
The other TT that I always found interesting was the Accutrac- anyone remember those?-> had that robot-head remote and you could select tracks via buttons on the TT, etc... pretty cool and definitely ahead of its time. A few do appear on Ebay from time to time.

Yes, this turntable is a KLH 20.
I purchased it for my father, who like "nice looking" systems with "real" wood as well as vinyl.
I had the system professionally restored by an older technician (now retired). So it now operates like new; all functions, lights, and knobs work.
The system was used with a pair of KLH 17 speakers.
BTW, this system is now for sale.

LUXMAN PX-101
TECHNICS sp-25
TECHNICS Two-1200MKII
The 1200's are from my Disc Jockey days. The SP-25 does not have a base at the moment. It was used by one of my local radio stations before they went off the air. The B & O I got for $5.00 at good will. The guy said it didn't work. When I went inside the belt had slipped off. It also came with the cartridge in tact. Works like new. The Luxman is linear tracking, it works but needs to be serviced.

At the moment, I have a Hitachi HT-1 ca. 1983 (P-mount Grado Prestige Black) with a new belt. One of those turntables that audiophiles typically call "plastic junk." However, the tonearm is a surprisingly good gimbal suspension with no horizontal wiggle, the motor speed is stable, and aside from extreme sensitivity to vibration it sounds pretty good -- even with quiet classical type music. Heck, it even tracks the HFNRR test record almost perfectly, and I paid $11.00 for this beast on Ebay.
I'm fishing around for upgrades, but not unhappy with the sound of this one (especially when listening with headphones :D )

This is my latest turntable.
It will replace my trusty Philips GA-312 in my home office.
It really is a beautiful piece of "classic" German engineering and construction. This turntable is direct drive and very quiet.
I am really impressed with the design approach of the Dual ULM (Ultra Low Mass) arm. It uses a custom-designed, Ortofon cartridge that was design for use with the ULM arm. The cartridge is similar in performance to the Ortofon OM20.
20 years later, I was STILL able get a new stylus for this cartridge! The best price for the stylus was in Germany (surprise) for 30.16 Euros. The best price in the US was $49.95. I was also able to get a new owners manual.
Overall, it sounds and operates very nice. I am very pleased.
UPDATE: RadioShack.com carries the original Ortofon replacement stylus (DN155E) for this cartridge (TKS-55E) for $24.95.

The only thing I don't like about the Yamaha is the black color. I'd love to find a PF-1000, basically the same tt, just has a wood base and brass center plater. It really is an amazing tt. You can pound your fist on the table it's sitting on and it doens't miss a beat. I've been sort of lusting after a AR EB-101. But I'm not sure if it's as good as the Yammy. But I love it's wood base and it does have floating suspention.
I pulled the Pioneer out of my Stepdads basement, it is in like new condition, I have all the originall paper work for it. I like it, It is spring mounted so, it takes vibrations pretty good and with a cheapo cartridge I don't mind putting the worst LP's on it.
Joel at the turntable factory thinks the Ratshack TT is a Panasonic/Technics. I sent him pictures of it. I'm trying find new rubber feet for it. The originals are shot. It also rumbles pretty bad. I really don't like DD TT's all that much. The sentimental value of it has keep me from offing it.

Hey Jack,
The Music Hall and Project tables are built in the same factory, but I don't think the various models are exactly the same. I am really happy with it, although I haven't heard enough to make any meaningful comparisons. Michael,
This is the Gram Amp 2 SE, which is touted as being a cut above the regular Gram Amp 2. I am fairly happy with it, definitely better sounding than the built in phono stages in my vintage receivers/amps. I did swap out the original IC for a better one recently, but haven't listened to it enough to form any strong opinion there. I recently bought a highly modified Hafler preamp with a built in phono stage, so I'm not currently using this Gram Amp. Let me know if you want to give it a listen.

Grumpy:
I'm currently using a VPI HW-19 Mk IV with a Triplanar III tone arm and a Monster Cable Sigma Genesis 2000 low output MC on my system. Took my vinyl experience to a whole new level, obliterating my previous AR ES-1. To say I love this thing would be an understatement. Bought it used.
I still have the AR ES-1 with the factory supplied arm (while I don't know who makes it, it looks like an Audioquest) stashed, I'm thinking of hooking it up to my bedroom system, but it needs a new cart and I don't know how much I would want to use it, knowing I have my bad boy in the main system that sounds so much better. The wife's vinyl is trashed, so she has little interest. Besides, she's gotten the music she loves already on CD.
I also have a Kenwood KD-500 without tone arm I was given that would make an interesting project, but funds are limited right now so it will have to wait. Several of my vinyl loving friends have told me I'm better off investing money in the AR than on the Kenwood, since they think it's got the best potential. It would also be cheaper since all the AR needs is a new cart. Decisions, decisions...
Hey, my first post here!

Grumpster,
I have 4 TTs, two in use and one of the others being prepared for it's assault on the vinyl world again.
They are
Gyro, SAEC 407/23, Denon 103D or Win Labs SDT10
Townshend Rock Elite, Merlin PSU, Excaliber, Garrott Decca London,
and a pair of Technics SP10 Mk2 TTs with SH10 PSU. One of the SP10's will get my new SME10 arm and Denon 103S, as soon as I can make a plinth for it.
Three working TT systems are a bit much for the living room. Once the SP10 is up and running for a while, I'll decide which one can go. The Rock is definitely staying.

Here's a pic of my Thorens TD-160 (MkI) in its current state. It needs a headshell (which I have located, just waiting for it to be sent), a new belt (the old one has stretched too much) and new RCA plugs (can't decide whether to re-wire or just cut off the old & attach new ones... I'll probably try the latter first and avoid digging around the insides for awhile -- depends if there's hum without a separate ground wire connected to my preamp).
The cosmetics are very good indeed, someone took very good care of this TT.

Pic(s) to come..gotta get 'em developed (and hope they turn out!). This, like most other Denon TT's, is a great big, beautiful unit. For those not familiar with it, it's a semi-auto (lift at end of disc; no return or shutoff), as are all of the "L" tables. The "F" tables are fully auto, including cueing to disc. (The 47F even automatically senses disc size and sets speed, doesn't it? Pretty cool, in my book.)

I hate to say this, but they've also made some very crappy ones (which I've had the misfortune to 'run into' somewhere along the line). But I suppose that can be said of many TT manufacturers. Unfortunately, a couple bad experiences have spoiled me to the brand.

There was the Kenwood/Trio L07D of course...
Moog, the TD160 looks to be in very nice condition. Good luck and have lots of fun with it.
Northman, the Super incorporates a lot of the mods that tweakers were already doing to thier standard 160's back in late 70's and early 80's. Like a better mat, damped sub-chassis, no foam damping in the springs. Not certain but I think the main bearing was also improved.
There some articles in the Analog Dept which talk about the differences and other mods. I found them in some old English mags.

Ditto Sony... I would actually trade my Thorens TD-160 for a mint condition Sony PS-X60 or PS-X50. They probably sound better! I really don't care for the idea of synchronous AC motors, and no way to fine-tune speed if the belt doesn't sit perfectly on the pulley, or the line frequency varies a bit. Having lived too long already with TT's with speed "just a little off," using the direct drive Optonica has been refreshing.
Northman

Actually, that's about the only complaint about my Denon DP57L--no pitch control. True, it has the "quartz lock," a precision speed control, and it utilizes a magnetic servo motor (not syncronous), but still....
(Oh, and I wouldn't mind a little more torque, either...guess there is no perfect TT, so we buy more than one!!)
Moogfan
08-25-2002, 02:14 PM
Northman, are there pitch control pots inside the TT? My experience is that usually there are even on the cheapest TT's, if there's no external speed adjustment (unless it uses a synchronous AC motor, which is timed off the power line frequency). Usually they're either on the motor controller board, or if there's a small circuit board connected to the 33/45 switch they sometimes put them there.
Northman

Huh...never even thought to look! I'll pull the unit apart some time and peek around for a pitch control pot. Thanks for the heads-up on that!

My tables include:
Garrard Synchro-Lab 95B
Thorens TD160
Thorens TD145
Denon DP75/aftermarket laminated base (heavy) and VM professional arm
Dual 1019
I'm currently using the Garrard with a Grado black cartridge. All the tables work nice, the Garrard is least suseptable to footfalls (a big problem in my home, especially with the Thorens).

Howdy guys,
I've recently obtained(for $90) a beautiful Yamaha PF800 w/Adcom Cart. I use it with a Nak TA-2A Stasis Amp/Rec. and a pair of Advent 4's. This combo, all bought on the cheap, sounds great in my small room. If PunkerX or any other owners see this, I have a couple of questions:
1) I've only been able to obtain a poorly reproduced PDF file copy of the manual. It's flat out impossible to read the Shaded IMPORTANT sections! Know where I can find the real deal?
2) How and to what degree do you adjust the 3 springs? When are you done?
If you need a belt for this TT or the 1000 I have the model #somewhere, I got mine from Garage-a-records(nice and fast service).
BTW,the only difference w/the 1000(other than the color scheme) is that the platter is made of bronze instead of zinc.
Anyone w/any info at all, please respond.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. The 1000, other than a different platter, had a wood-finish base, unlike your 800 (yours is black, I assume). As for adjusting your springs, it isn't a matter of being "finished," so to speak; it's a matter of getting the table LEVEL via the three suspension towers, and adjusting the spring tension to where you feel there's enough give to absorb outside vibrations but not so much mushiness that your 'table bounces at footfalls, etc. I'd suggest tuning them all so they're reasonably "tight," then loosening them a little at a time until you reach the desired compromise. How do the rest of you guys do it?
BTW: I didn't even know Adcom even made carts--I assume it wasn't too many years? How does it sound? That would be very cool to hear. Then again, it seems everyone around 1988-1992 was coming out with a cart (KRELL, for God's sake!!!)
Good luck with your beautiful TT!

Thanks Northman,
The Adcom GFC-16 is what came w/the TT. I think it sounds great! My first MC. I upgraded from a Technic QR350(I think) that was having pitch problems and have found this rig to sound exceptional. I've been playing the Telarc Soundstream Digital "Stravinsky/Firebird/Shaw/ASO" mastered by the great Stan Ricker as a control. If you're into Classical(even if most dig. LP's suck!) you should definitely check this disc out. Seriously deep grooves and massive low end.
Also, the local Audio shop guy likes the Adcoms(and he hates everything). I don't have any further info on Adcom at all. If you come up w/anything please let me know.

TAS reviews the Spacedeck along with the Michell GyroDec.
I bought my Spacedeck after hearing a bunch of good stuff from Audio Asylum inmates, esp. Rob Doorack who wrote the Listener review of the Spacedeck. Fortunately, a Nottingham dealer (actually the former US importer) was within driving distance so I could actually hear the table.
One good thing about the arm "pod" on the Nottinghams--it allows use of Rega arms(and others) and gives VTA adjustment (with the appropriate collar).

BTW, I had considered the Michell as well (but never heard one); glad to see the reviewer preferred the Spacedeck.

I'm using a stock standard Rega 3, RB 300 arm and a Benz Micro Silver cartridge. Sitting in a box in the storage room is a Mission 774 with a Mission arm.
My first turntable was a Dual 1219.
My second turntable was Dual 1229.
My third turntable was a Technics SL 1200.
My fourth turntable was the Mission.
I sold the Technics. It was a very good turntable.
I used the Mission until my son, in his innocent curiousity, destroyed the Linn Basik arm and Blue Point cartridge that was mounted in it. The RB300 would not fit the the Mission, so the Mission was packed away. I do not miss the Blue Point cartridges. They were much too fragile.
I very much like the Rega.

I'm currently using a VPI HW19Jr, with an OrigineLive-modified Rega 250 arm (including their cables) and Shure V15XMR. I also use an Antique Sound USA (not Antique Sound Labs, though I do use their amps in a variety of ways) PP1 phono stage. The OriginLive arm made a larger difference than I thought possible, with soundstage and imaging both more palpable. The Shure - well, those of us who know it will understand - is one of those products that seems to do everything quite well. It does track just about everything, meaning that there are few disks I feel that I have to avoid and few sessions that leave me fatigued. I do have a Sumiko Blue Point around here (I like it, but its non-replaceable stylus is a disadvantage, high-end Stanton (maybe I'll work with it in future), and Grado Gold (I just can't bring myself to work hard enough to make the Grado track properly and that end-of-record/toward the motor hum!).
Good weekend listening to all!

Well, the BPS really is a good cartridge, but the cost of a new one is not much higher than the reported cost of a retip. I do enjoy the Sumiko; it does a revealing job with my recordings. The Shure has an advantage over a lot of cartridges, in my view, in that it moves the tweek-time/enjoy-the-music-time ratio in a favorable direction.

TY,
I actually changed the order with Larry to a Scout with a JMW-9 arm - cartridge stayed the same.
With regard to the initial Jr / RB300 combo I was going to get Larry stated that frequent cartridge changes would require a special Rega VTA base - an additional $150 to the arm. I did not care about that, since I don't change carts too often.
I don't know if this answers your question.
Regards,
~Michael~
Tonto Yoder
10-20-2002, 01:39 PM
Yep,
$150 is the magic number for VPI--that's the Rega sleeve that allows for adjustable VTA. It looks like a top hat sorta---a metal cylinder with hexagonal flange (the flange being the brim of the hat). Always thought $150 was expensive. There's an Incognito "Easy Riser" for $39 that's probably not as well-built & sturdy, but it's $110 cheaper.
BTW,
some people are of the set-it-and-forget-it school of VTA (Regas can be adjusted with shims/spacers for this crowd). Personally, I like to tweak VTA with some regularity. There's one guy on Audio Asylum who has a VTA setting marked on every LP and adjusts EACH LP for VTA!!!!

The more expensive the cart gets the more nervous I get. Hence - once set by Larry it stays that way. My future plans include a Helikon (maybe next year) with a phono to match - but I will certainly have Larry do the adjusting on that. It just makes me feel better.
Resetting VTA for each LP? There is a 12-Step program for that, no :D ?

Don't believe the OriginLive arm allows for VTA adjustment. I seem to have good VTA with the Shure. Tracking, imaging, and frequency response all seem good. Maybe the Shure (V15xMR) is forgiving. Maybe I'm going deaf.
Anyway, a recent guest (victim to whom a demonstration of the system took place) noticed the palpable quality of sound played through the VPI HW19JR/OriginLive/V15xMR combination and noted that instruments in the center were centered, almost as if there were a speaker dedicated to the jazz instrument positioned center stage.
Tonto Yoder
10-21-2002, 07:09 PM
small cars,
I have the Origin Live Rega as well, so I knew the arm itself didn't have VTA. Roy Gandy didn't believe any benefits of VTA outweighed arm rigidity. My particular table has an arm pod that grabs the arm pillar, so pillar height (and consequently VTA) can be raised or lowered via a set screw.
VPI's VTA sleeve has interior threads--the threads of a Rega arm pillar screw into/out of the sleeve and the Rega nut is retightened.

In the end I was rewarded with great sound, but the road to that point had me making adjustments on my old Dual that I didn't know were adjustable...
Azimuth adjustment was where I had the problem, if you are curious. The Shure seemed somewhat insensitive to VTA, but on both the Thorens and the Dual I had to set azimuth to within a gnat's ass azimuth for it to track properly. Once there, all is cool. Tracks beautifully.

one possible upgrade path is to transfer your Rega arm to a Nott TT, ordering a special collet for the arm pod (Of course, you end up with a Systemdek armless TT). I have the Spacedeck that I use with a modded RB250 that I already had--made the purchase a little easier $$wise.

We'll survive but no extras for a while. If my present motor

Douger,
sorry to hear of your dilemma. The ASL (Audiophile Systems) site that distributes Nott has always sucked in my opinion. Really minimal information and basically nothing on the upcoming TT's except on the price list page. All the more surprising when some of the tables are SO expensive.

BTW, Venus Hi-Fi (vendor Forum) carries some of the AudioNote stuff--maybe he could get the motor for you.
Just picked up one last week for $71. Dismantled it sandblasted all the crud off of it and repainted it black. It looks so good it could kill. Oh and I also fixed that little rubber belt that is supposed to be the "big" problem with these tt's.

FWIW...
my "main" tt nowadays is a little bang & olufsen TX2 that I picked up at a fleamarket for $7. I invested $100 in the cheap b&o cartridge (MMC4) and was flabbergasted by the sound quality... that "zero tracking error" thing really does seem to make a difference.
tt #2 is my purchased-new Philips AF877 with Grado F1+. Sounds good but not up to the above-mentioned tt.
Also in use at Casa Hardy: Pioneer PL512D (a freebie) with Grado (IIRC) F3E+1
My son has a (freebie) Technics SLB2 (IIRC) and some sort of Sony DD (cheap from eBAY) both equipped with some sort of Stanton all-in-one DJ carts for scratchin'
Then there are other rescued tt's at Casa Hardy awaiting attention. Most are unimpressive. One I am holding great hopes for is a Thorens TD280 I got for $5. Needs a belt but seemed to work fine with a jury-rigged belt.

mhardy,
there have been threads elsewhere extolling the virtues of non-rubber drive belts: cassette tape glued together, dental floss and silk ribbon have been suggested, not as a poor substitute for the original belt, but as superior replacements.
I believe the Walker Proscenium TT now ships with several silk ribbon belts. I'll double-check and edit this post if I'm wrong.
TY
Yep, I'm right:
"Remote Drive Motor - Enclosed in a matching cast crushed marble enclosure, the motor drive is mounted on Valid Points and sets on a adjustable motor base assembly so that belt tension can be easily adjusted. The drive pulley is straight cut so that any belt material up to 5/16 of an inch may be used. Two to four millimeter 100% pure silk belts are supplied and preferred. "

Hey TY,
Yes, the plinth is almost black - with just some marbleized green in it. Love it - I'm glad you mentioned it.
I talked to Larry about adding a second arm with a Grado Sonata - not to compete with the DV - but for a different tonality. That will be fed through a Grado PH-1 - should be fun. I really like the simplicity of this table and of the tonearm.

Last week on ebay a sealed MFSL copy of DSOTM went for over $700 - Well - a nice start indeed. Can't go wrong with most MFSL vinyl. A little off topic - but I just ordered a copy of Offenbach: Gaite Parisienne (Fiedler/BPO) - on RCA (180 gram). This is by many regarded as the finest recording by RCA. Looking forward to playing it and hearing what the fuss is all about. :D

Hi Michael,
I've never been a big fan of MFSL.
Most of the ones I've owned or heard were marvellously packaged and often immaculately pressed but sonically inferior to original pressings.
Much of this aural dissatisfaction was the result of MFSL's propensity to juice up the sound of their re-masters.
:(
The Classic Records RCA Living Stereo re-issues are in a different league altogether .
Many of the Classic Records RCA's sound BETTER than the originals !
These really were re-mastered from the original tapes, unlike many MFSL's.
Back in 1994 I bought the first 10 RCA re-issues, back then they each had individual serial numbers on them.
This included the Offenbach you ordered.
RCA LSC-1817 Serial # 1 -1267; the 1 signifying the re-issue stamper number.
You won't be disappointed.
This is a superb recording, truly deserving of all the praise that has been lavished on it.
A couple of other favorites include:
LSC-1806 Strauss...Also Sparch Zarathrustra Reiner/CSO
LSC-2398 Kabalevsky...The Comedians Kondrashin/RCAVO
LSC-2446 Rimsky-Korsakov...Scheherazade Reiner/CSO
LSC-2449 Faust Ballet Music/Carmen Suite Gibson/ROHO
LSC-2225 Witches Brew Gibson/NSoL
Enjoy !

Agree that there were some nice mofi's. I think the Rickie Lee Jones and DSTOM were a couple of their better efforts. Would love to try one of Classic's releases but have never come across them here. If possible I'd be looking for the Brahms Violin Concerto - Heifitz/Reiner. That $700 for the DSTOM would have to be for a UHQR, wouldn't it?

Last week I talked my buddy into finally bringing his LINN Axis TT out for an audition through some vintage equipment. Not sure what the cartridge is, but its a moving coil with a Quicksilver TT preamp.
Needless to say... I've been spinning vinyl like a madman lately & there deffinately is magic in them there grooves! :p:
Hoping I have this for a while,

Currently using a Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck with the Spacearm. Cartridge is a Shure V15VxMR and the phonostage is a Graham Slee Era Gold.
Also have a Technics SP-25 with the EPA-500 tonearm that I am planning on selling soon. Would love to keep this elegant table but I do not have the real estate to :)

two in use at present.
.vpi hw19III/smeIV/sumiko talisman virtuoso vdh. couldnt pass up the price, i didnt have the money when i took it home for a trial.
.pioneer PLL1000a quartz dd/straight line tracker with universal headshell (i just love to swap cartridges quickly and thats not an option with the sme). this is the exact same tt as the phase linear 8000a.
.working but resting-
. modified rabco st4-arm removed (wow and flutter dropped dramatically when the platter no longer had to drive the arm) and replaced with a rabco SL8e/ grace f9e mounted on one arm tube, original blue point with technics pmount adapter (the sumiko adaptor was styrene crap plastic and easily cracked).
.in need of pump and minor repair
.mapleknoll athena-the most VIVID table ive ever heard. if i had the bux i would go for the walker proscenium in a NY minute.
.formerly owned-
.technics SL120/grace 707/adc XLM (my favorite all time cartridge)
.kenwood kd500/707
.rabco st4, remarkable for the price, gave the grado f1+ GREAT bass. this one caused a friend to rebuy another st4 after selling his prior to hearing the grado in the rabco. biggest problem was the fussiness of the plastic parts and wow and flutter.
i modified one arm truck by cutting the counterweight EXACTLY in half thus half the weight, an aluminum counterweight bolt, and removal of the headshell. in doing these mods, i was able to reduce the tracking force of the XLM from the formerly required 1.5 gr to 1.0 with the same trackablity.
in stock form and with the new XLM, it nearly knocked me off the couch playing 'ive got to have you' by carly simon from the 'anticipation' album. this disc was used for speaker evaluation at infinity when they were in their old facility in northridge (not the monster one on nordhoff).
i had at one time, three arm trucks, they were easily removable from the table by unplugging the wire and replacing it with another one. THOSE were the days, my formative audiophile years.

CS5000 with Ortofon X3MC. Although Dual made a lot of nice looking and performing tables, I think this one is one of the prettiest. DC servo controlled motor makes for very low noise and the X3 is a nice match. It has an auto tonearm lift at the end of the record that just actuates the cueing mechanism with a solenoid and detects the end of record with an optical interrupter so the tonearm doesn't drag a mechanism around under it. I just wish I had known about that guy in HK selling the X5 for $115 before I paid Needle Doctor $275 for the X3.
Before this one I had a Music Hall MMF2 that was a serious disappointment to me.
The one before that was a Denon DP37F that was mint when I sold it for $25 to a coworker after the rave reviews led me to believe that POS Music Hall was an upgrade. I hadn't discovered Ebay yet. I saw one that was not as nice as mine go for $200. Oh well, I do know the guy that has it is enjoying it.

Right now, my main player is a Philips 212 with a Shure M75. Sure it might be "mid-fi" but it serves me very kindly. I just put a new stylus on it and set it all up using the CART ALIGN from last summer's garage/estate sale sprees. It performs like a real turntable should.
I also have a real early Panasonic 4-speed with a super sexy wood base. I've never messed with this one before, but will get around to it, might be a fun project for mods. $5, had to get it.
And today, I picked up a Dual 1015 F in a United Audio base. Tested it in all ways except through an amp, it passed, I paid $10. In the not so far of future, I hope to find a nice Thorens, to see what all the hype is about. I just dont want to have it lost/hurt in shipping or pay rediculous eBay prices. So I'm holding out till one comes up locally.
For the love of Chess Records, I'm addicted!

I've got nine or ten turntables. They all work, some better than others (a few need adjustments, the SL-1400MK2 suffers from the Mk2 problem the arm lift is kaput, but works wonderfully switched to manual). The two SP-25's need to (A) put into the rosewood base and fit the Sumiko Premier MMT, and (B) find another sweet arm.

The stylus replacement for your M91 is N91ED. That stylus will NOT work for the M95ED which requires a N95ED replacement. The parts express number for it is Part Number:230-400 The price is $8.40. The Grado Black is $30.00 from Brian B over at Venus HiFi. Here is the links if you need them

my cart is the ME95ed so the replacement NE95ed i'm not sure how much difference there is but Shure's price for the NE is $10 more than for the N. and it doesn't look like it's on parts express. if they had it it would certainly be the best price around.
Picked this one up on ebay for $70 it had a non working arm lift which is really easy to fix, I just used a small o-ring at it works fine. I dismantled it completely, sandblasted it, painted it black and baked it for awhile to get a really hard finish. It's hard to separate the performance of just one part of the system. However, I will say that I am COMPLETELY satisfied with the sound of this cartridge in my system, and would buy another Benz in preference to any other make cartridge I have owned. For the price, I have found nothing that suits me better.
A BIG CAVEAT- I have owned TOTL cartridges from Shure, Pickering, Goldring, and Audio Technica, but the Benz is the first cartridge I have owned that is less than a decade old, so perhaps it has an advantage. Also, it is the only one I have used in the Rega P-25. I will post something in the review forum on the cartridge for you.

Have you ever tried a Clearaudio? I totally loved the Benz I had before, but the Clearaudios are a bit better, but with the same character.

No, I never tried a Clearaudio. I tend to go through various audio items until I find something I like, then I stop buying and start listening. Since I find the Benz satifies me, I have not looked elsewhere.
Of course, since I'm looking to put together another system, I will keep your recco in mind,

That's also what usually happens to me. I needed a new cart. and my dealer suggested the Clearaudio. I had worn out the Benz. Could have had either one as they are both dist. by Musical Surroundings, so the trade up allowance worked for either one.:)
I finished the modified AR several weeks ago. Seems good enough now that I'll stop fiddling with it for awhile.
Started with an AR-XA with a stock tonearm and a dead stock motor.
The modifications are:
1. Motor replaced with a higher-torque 300 RPM motor from a BIC 960. While BIC tables weren't much, they always had excellent motors. It's almost identical to the motors sold on ebay as AR mods. I had tried a DC-servo modification but didn't like the sound and put the synchronous motor back in.
2. Suspension springs replaced with those with a slightly higher spring rate. It's all to reduce the "footfall" problem.
3. The base is the heavy wooden base from a defunct Pioneer PL-47 turntable. This help isolation.
4. The tonearm (#4) is a 10" Pioneer seperate. After the AR arm, a Sansui arm, and the arm from a Pioneer PL-71, I think this new arm (which is probably pretty old but in beautiful shape) is the champ.
The sound? All I can say is WOW! Solid, neutral, and incredible detail! All for an outlay of about $200 and many hours of trial-and-error. I had a good time, too.
:)

Danj, Nice job!!!:D
The hardest part was getting the tonearm in the right spot without a template. Just used an overhang gauge and a bit of common sense to figure it out and it worked!
The tonearm is no longer suspended as I couldn't make that work. I have another suspension and will someday modify it to accept the Pioneer arm. However, the current setup works fine and it's exceptionally quiet so maybe another modification isn't necessary.
I will be putting on an antiskate of the hanging weight variety sometime fairly soon. I gotta figure out the best way to do it to make it both functional and attractive. I think I'll get a machine shop to bend some stainless steel rod for me. Or maybe I will get lucky and find something else I can cannibalize!
Oh, the tonearm counterweight was too heavy for the headshell and cartridges I have so I had to improvise. I used parts from several of the weights in my parts box and ended up with a tight sleeve and a counterweight with a setscrew - kinda like the original AR weight setup. It works fine but VTF has to be set with a scale (I use a Shure SFG-2). I wonder how I've altered the effective mass of the arm but am not worried as it seems to have worked out for the better. I got lucky, I guess.

I used to have a Russell Coco modifies AR with a Magnepan Unitrac arm mounted on the suspension. Should haave changed the arm, instead, I gave it to some friends , and it sits in their closet in their hone in Colorado!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know the old saying is so true.......
"If I knew then what I know now!"
When I was in the Navy - some 30 years ago - I could get some incredible stereos at such cheap prices in the base exchange. I wish I would have stocked up!
A Marantz 2270 was $200! I bought my Pioneer SX-727 for $150 and my Kenwood KD3022 for $79! I could have bought an Empire turntable for $150 or an AR for $60 or a Revox A77 for $255! I did buy a Dual 1219 from the tech shop for a whopping $20! This was 1973 when the 1219 was still available new, although the 1229 was the current model.
Of course, I have absolutely none of that stuff any more. It's long gone - replaced by what I thought was better stuff. That was before I grew to realise that it's the sound and not the whiz-bang features that matter.

I have many tables over the years. My current line up include:
1. Nad built by Rega
2. Dual 1229
3. Dual 1009,much like my high school 1010s
4. Miracord 50H
All are hooked up and in running condition. Working on a Miracord 10. Had a Thorens TD-160 and probably will have one again. Had some mass marketed Pioneers and Technics too numerous to mention. If they have electronic controls I wont look at it. A good vintage table without electronics maintained properly will outlast me!!!!:D :D :D
Added an antiskate to my DIY hybrid AR-Pioneer (see previous posts). The antiskate came from a dead Kenwood KD1033 and is a hanging-weight type. These work well if properly strung so that any movement of the weight is damped by the tension of the line.
Works great and only took about 12 hours for the epoxy to cure! (I wasn't about to drill a hole in that beautiful tonearm,)

IMO I just like the sheer weight of the 125. I think its roughly 30 pounds versus the 160's 15 pounds or so. I believe that extra weight isolates vibration much better which equates to better sound. I also Like the adjustable pitch control which others hate on the 125. Mine is rock steady. Lastly the build quality of the 125 trounces the 160. Again for all you guys who love your 160 I am not knocking them. I just feel the 125 was a better mouse trap.
One of the things that bugs me about the 125 or any Thorens for that matter is the lack of quality feet. The 125 or atleast mine has 4 felt pads on the bottom. Its not too big of a deal to me since i use mine with a set of Audio Technica's isolation feet on the bottom. They help a great deal. I recomend these to any one for most turntables.

Thanks for the comments Grumps. Hope you don't find yourself alone in a room with half a dozen 160 owners then. ;)
Fair point about the feet. The 160S has felt feet too but supposedly larger than the standard 160. Felt feet nevertheless.
I had a problem with footfalls which got a bit better with a Mission isoplat and it improved more with the AT feet so I would second your recommendation for those handy little devils.
All problems cured by going over to the SP10!:p:

As a new member I have been browsing here and there. This is an impressive list of TTs!
Mine is a rega P2 I bought new in 1980 while living in Ottawa. It has the OEM'd RB200 arm and the only mod was to replace the Rega feet with Audio Technica isolation feet, bought a new belt last year, other than that it looks new.
Run three cartridges with it; Audio Technica AT-5, Shure V15 Mk III (I had the pleasure of meeting its designer, Lee Gunter of Shure), and an Audio Technica AT31G MC that I picked up in London (UK) while doing a seminar there. Only MC that I have ever seen with a replaceable stylus.
It sits on the desk beside my computer whil I burn CDs from my vinyls, maily because it is so hard to get those 12" platters in the slot in the car radios.

Favorite all around table - BIC 980. Not just good performance, but I like its heritage of forcing the changer market over to belt drive almost single handedly. :ntwrthy:
Fancy-schmancy table - Yamaha YP-D8. Tonearm has so many adjustments that I find it daunting, and I'm surprised that a base with that level of density and mass doesn't have an accretion ring circulating about it. :alien:
Workhorse table - Technics SL-230. Just works well, all the time. No drama.
Table I wish I didn't like - a couple of old BSRs. Same principle as junk food...a guilty pleasure of watching it go through its industrial gyrations, knowing that more music has been played by these things than any other. Just not very *good* music.... :naughty:
Rube Goldberg table - Garrard Zero 92. 'nuff said. :wtf:
That's the majority of the Casa Gentry inventory. I'm sure I left off a few that are around here somewhere...
Oh, BTW, if anyone has a lead on the manual for the YP-D8 I'd appreciate it. Yamaha's site doesn't have one, and they looked in their archives and couldn't turn one up...

Hey danj !
I've got one of those 146's too !
Does your's have a plug in transformer??, rather than standard power cord?

Actually its an older AR-XA, but several years back, the arm was removed by me, and a friend, and we mounted a Japanese Carbon Fiber Arm in its place... This arm actually came off a later AR TT... I forget which model. But it is black, and thin, and has a removable cartridge mount.
I've got about 8 or 9 mounts each with a different vintage cartridge... but my fav is a B&O SP-12... the one that looks like the nose of the Concorde. It has a long thin cantilever and a nude elliptical diamond for low mass. Its a wonderful sounding cartridge... but it weighs so much it can't be properly counterbalanced in the arm... So I stuck a round ceramic magnet removed from some modern headphones onto the back of the counterweight, which adds enough weight to just adjust for zero.
Wonderful sort of one-of-a-kind TT.
I'll see if I have a pix somewhere.

OK, I'll admit, I have two or three "other" turntables, which I don't think I've ever used.
One I think is a Sony, that was a freebie. The other is a Stanton, neither is really high end, but I'll say the Stanton is interesting. Instead of a normal ball bearing there are powerful opposing magnets under the platter and on the chassis which form an "Air Bearing" and I thought that a super idea... too bad they ruined it with a cheap :uzi: :uzi: plastic base!~~!
Also a proprietary headshell, I've never been able to find another, so maximum useability would be for one cartridge...

I ebayed the 146. It sold in just a few hours for a very nice price.
I wanted to keep it but the fact that I already have too many nice turntables, including two ARs, made up my mind.
I did have it hooked up for several days and it was typical Thorens great. Plus they look so coooooooool!

I would think that Stanton tt would be worth affixing to a nice solid base. The performance of those magnetic bearing Stantons is exceptionally good. The only caveat I've heard is that they do need to be very level.
I've bid on a couple of those and never won. They show up on ebay very infrequently. Pickering had a model that was just like the Stanton except for a couple of minor cosmetic changes.

At one time or another, I've owned:
Philips 212
Technics SL-1600
Technics SL-1300Mk2
Technics SL-1400Mk2
Technics SL-QL1
Technics SL-1700Mk2
Although right now, I'm down to just one table, a Technics SL-1300Mk2 with an Ortofon Nightclub cartridge.

Wow! you really have been through the cream of Technics TTs.
I have the SL-1200Mk-II with Shure V-15 Mk-V cartridge. What new features are in the SL-1700 Mk2 and how good is the Ortofon cartridge?

New features on the 1700Mk2? It's not a new table, if that's what you're asking. Broadly speaking, it's basically a semi-automatic "home" version of the 1200Mk2. Pretty much the same circuitry, same motor, same platter, same tonearm (with added return mechanisms) as the 1200Mk2.
I like the Ortofon cartridge, but being a DJ cartridge, it tracks pretty heavy (3G). I have an old ADC ZLM cartridge that I'd prefer to use if truth be known, but I've been unable to find a replacement stylus for it.

Hello fellow vinylists...
I've got half a dozen Duals, two Technics 1200's, a couple Pioneers, an ARXA and some others I can't recall (if anybody's interested, just email) BUT.....
the only one I use regularly is my Marantz TT530 and I'll tell you why---
1)Direct drive (less parts, variable speed, strobe)
2)Linear tracking( I can hear tracking error on most tangential arms)
3)Microprocessor controlled- once the records on and the dust cover is down, you never need to open it. It will scan across the platter and cue from push buttons on the front.
Apparently these are widely used in Germany in used record stores because customers can't scratch the records.
Downside- cartridge is OK but not interchangable.
I've seen these go for peanuts on eBay. I put a price of 75.00 on mine and noone bid. Now I'm glad.
BTW, does anyone have a good source for turntable belts? Mine dried up and I don't want to pay MCM's price.
Cheers
Lee

Why do you need a belt when the only turntable you listen to is direct drive?

I thought the Technics SL 1200 are DD, at least the one I have is and also the most rugged ones ever to be made. It is true that linear tracking solves the problems of mistracking with difficult records and poor cartridges but overall a good cartridge is all you need to solve the problems.
Do you know Sansui too made a marvelous linear tracking TT with laser control?

Because I deal in used equipment and I have three or four TT's that need belts.

Not so.
A well designed and setup arm on a suitable table with a properly matched cartridge will be a better proposition to curing mistracking than merely fitting a good cartridge.
For example, a Koetsu Rosewood in a Technics SL-1200 is a total waste if time. The arm and table just aren't good enough for a Koetsu.

Thanks for the tip, tr!
I am wondering how, theoretically, a fixed pivot tonearm can ever be totally free of tracking error. The lathes that cut the vinyl track linearly (linearally?).
Yamaha- Does the Sansui use the laser to scan the tracks? If so, will it do random or program the order? To me it's kind of interesting that the use of microprocessor controls pretty much coincided with the end of the turntable era. The Marantz uses one and I love it. What's the model # on the Sansui?

The SL-1200 is more of a DJ TT and as such is quite rugged and durable, true the arm is designed for 7 grams load rather than .2 grams needed for finer cartridges like the Korestsu Rose etc.
It does its job pretty well and sice my I have put my investment on a Accuphase DP 70 CD player, I really have no option of investing in a costlier TT.
Radiolee,
The Sansui did use laser to scan tracks and it would do random order like CD players. It was really a good TT but sadly my younger cousin decided to try its arm manualy and totally ruined it.

Yamaha-
Do you happen to recall the model #?
I don't think the Marantz would work too well manually either(!)

Been about five years now, will dig up the manual and get back to you. Pity as it was a nice TT and really tracked problematic records pretty well.
