View Full Version : Perhaps a dumb question..

but I figured I should ask first.
I picked up an old receiver at the local thrift shop. It had a chewed up power cord, so I got out the soldering iron and threw in a decent cord from the surplus place. I got the plastic cord-squeezer grommet out, and squished the new cord in it. But I will damned if I can get the thing to ease back into the hole. What is the trick to these things?
I supose I will figure it out in the next month or two on my own, but before I scratch up the thing, I like to seek the wisdom of others.

Is the hole in the chassis round? Or is it "keyed" in some way.
I've always just squeezed the @%@#% out of the thing and popped it in.
If your new cord is thicker than the original you could try snipping a little material off the grommet. (The small piece that pinches the wire.) Those grommets are cheap and readily available if you bugger it up.

Bad question to ask on a public forum:D

Is the replacement cord the same thickness(gauge) as the original? If it is then with a pair of pliers squeeze the gromment hard and try to pop it into the hole twisting a little back and forth they can be stubborn.Try using a little alcohol for lubrication. If the cord is larger than original a little larger grommet is needed as well as a little larger hole inthe chassis.Good Luck!

I've had luck using locking vice grip pliers on those squeeze groments, it keeps it compressed while you work it into the hole. They can be a bitch but usually I win out :thmbsp:

If you do replace the old power cord with a fatter one, try exchanging the hard plastic grommet, which is designed to provide strain relief, with a plain neoprene rubber one. Then provide strain relief by tying a knot in the new power cord inside the receiver. That way it can't be pulled back through the hole, stressing the connectors its soldered to. I've done this and it seems to work fine.

Yes, a grommet with a bigger I.D. and smaller O.D. might work. But first, try lubing up the old one with a bit of WD-40. That's worked for me before.

Thanks for the tips. I do use KY, but don't think the water soluable lube is good for the chassis. The cord is slightly beefier than the stock one, but even clipping some room out of the clip was a pain. I did do a UL knot inside, so I am just going to grab a rubber grommet (KY jokes play right now) and use that instead.
And I plugged it in and is still works, so I didn't do so bad otherwise.
