What causes sibilance?

Is it the amplifier, the input to the amplifier, or the speakers?

Could be any of those, though in my experience it is most likely the speaker. Sibilance is excessive energy in the treble range, and can be caused by distortion in the preamp or amp as well. And, of course, sometimes excessive sibilance is there in the recording.

Or a phono cart that isn't tracking the skinniest gooves very well, or over driving your amp.

In my system, the recordings are #1 and only. In other systems I've heard, the speakers, and then the electronics.

I have a number of assorted records that may have been previously played on a poor or damaged stylus.:sigh:

Once the groove is shot, it's shot (unless your present cart. tracks the un-damaged "wall" of the groove).:scratch2:

sibilance is caused by distortion. It's either in your gear or coming from your source(s). One is an easy fix, the other a little more costly :tears: .

I've been moving things around and I'm 99% sure it's the sources. This is the first top end system I've had. Using the SX-1980's own tuner the sound quality is excellent. It's unforgiving of external sources (TV digibox and DVD/VCR); if there's sibilance or over compression present, it's there to be heard. I just have to get off my lazy backside and set the tone controls to suit:music: :music:

You can also use interconnect cables to correct part/whole of it. I always use my favourite MIT-330.

I'm quite sure it's Sally Field being the root cause of what causes Sybilance.
