i took a chance on this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Yamaha-A-1020-Natural-Sound-Stereo-Amplifier-NO-WORK_W0QQitemZ120103929546QQihZ002QQcategoryZ39783 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I'm hoping it's the jumpers, took a look at the owner's manual and it needs them to work properly, from what i understand some don't. The specs in the manual show 125W into 8ohms and 145W into 6 ohms, and i saw specs from a European page that listed
2 x 269 Watt an 4 Ohm maximal
2 x 125 Watt RMS an 8 Ohm (20 Hz - 20000 Hz, 0,005 THD)
2 x 171 Watt Musikleistung an 8 Ohm
The manual i have doesn't list power into 4 ohm? 269 seems high, i thought if you went from 8 to 4 it would (in some amps) double the power?
The main reason i bought it was to run a pair of maggies (4 ohm) I'm assuming this will do fine?
i guess i took two chances considering his feedback.

The rating is:
125W@8ohm sinus (DIN = WPC?)
169W@4ohm sinus (DIN)
Dynamic power
269W@4ohm
375W@2ohm
It was the TOTL integrated amp in 1985; I don't think you took a chance with the amp :)
----EDIT----
Yes Urizen has a point; 5W@8ohm in class A.

I used to own this model. Great sounding and sounds even better in Class A, but runs much warmer in that mode.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you!:thmbsp:

I had this amp and had it gone thru by Merrylander.A fine amp.If it turns out to be a jumper issue, you got one heck of a deal.

That's the Amp section of one of my favorite Receivers, the Yammie R-9. Does it have Auto-Class A?
according to the owners manual it does. Does that mean for the first 5W it automaticaaly runs class A, and then switches too?, class B, AB, I'm realy unfamiliar with the different classes.
What is Dynamic Power, as opposed to continuous power

In class A mode the first 5W@8ohm is pure class A, when the signal demands more power it delivers this extra power as class A/B.
But you will be running @ 4ohm, so you get a little more Class A. But be aware the amp gets HOT in this mode and when you are driving it @ 4 ohm turn of the heat and hope for more snow.
Dynamic power is peaks in a music signal; continuous power is a constant tone or signal.

I don't think the amp sections are the same. Maybe the same design base, but definately different from power supply to output from every version I have seen. It seems superior with large trannies, bigger caps, and more heatsink area.

Cool, I was going to go for that one as well. I had it in my watch list. Let us know how it works out. I'm glad a AKr got it!

well i hope it is only the jumpers. i told myself i would stop buying "non- working" pieces. Did you notice the jumpers missing when you were watching? i've heard some sellers will remove them in order to lure buyers into thinking this is the problem, only to find out it's something internal :nono: . i didn't want to e-mail the guy, figuring if this is the problem he would pull the item or revise his listing.
Oh well i be sure to post as soon as i find out, good :thmbsp: or bad :thumbsdn: .

Could be the problem after all. I have been watching all the Yamaha he has been selling and there is quite a bit there for a home theater. You should know within a week I guess.

I had a yamaha A-720. Looked similar to yours but without a flip down panel. Mine had jumpers between the ACCESSORY Send and Receive jacks. (See Pic)
Nice sounding amp in Class A mode but very hot. Keep it well ventilated. I also found it took a good 15-20 minutes to "warm up" and really start sounding sweet.
You may also find those push button selectors are a PITA. Mine needed a few DeOxit treatments.

i noticed they call them accessory send and receive as opposed to pre and main, that's what threw me off at first, but i did a bit of research and found they were the same. From what i've heard so far, once it's up and running, i've got a nice amp. Maybe now i'll be able to see what i've been mising with my maggies, up until now i've been running them with about 70-100W (different amps and receivers). Beleive it or not they seem to work best with a Technics au-8600 (about 76w i think) so i can't wait. :D

Are you sure that they are the same as pre ins/outs? I think I tried using my A-720 as a preamp once and could not get it to work.
That said, I didn't spend much time "troubleshooting". I just popped the jumpers back in and called it a day.
Also, if you're not familiar with Yamaha, be sure to aquaint yourself with proper use of the "Variable Loudness" control.

Yes, i read the owners manual and the do indeed link the pre-amp with the power amp.
