There was a period when they were issuing LPs on every color of the rainbow even some transparent LPs. I have a Technics SL-1600 Mk2 with the size sensors in the platter and it refuses to play the transparent ones because it thinks there is no LP on the platter.

Late 70's was one of the low points in vinyl sales. Nearly all labels reissued classic rock albums and some new releases in colored vinyl and picture discs to try to boost interest and sales. White was less common, but I do own The Beatles White Album on Apple-Pathe' France and a reissued 45 of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane that are both pressed on white. Most common colors are transparent blue, red, orange, green and yellow. Every once in awhile you'll see a few "marble" discs too.

Some audiophile disks were deliberately released on white rather than black vinyl. Black vinyl is colored with carbon (specifically, I think, graphite)... it is said that black vinyl is intrinsically noisier than white or clear vinyl. Crystal Clear's outstanding 45 rpm, direct to disk, 12" album "Charlie Byrd" is an outstanding example of a very high quality, white vinyl disk.

Translucent red vinyl was not uncommon in the 1950's and early 1960's, including some "hi-fi demonstration" disks of the first hi-fi era :-)

PS. plain ol' vinyl (polyvinylchloride) is clear.

I have the Beatles 62-66 aka The Red Album on red vinyl, appropriatly enough. Also the first Dead Boys LP on green. Finally, I have a Springsteen bootleg on white marble vinyl. Interesting effort for an illegal record.

I have a Beatles Abbey Road picture disk - I only played it a couple of times and I thought it didn't sound as good as my regular vinyl copy. I recently picked up a couple of Japanese imports - an early Bob Dylan on red vinyl and a Yardbirds compilation (orange).

Nice, that sounds like some very cool vinyl your friend gave you! :music: I think I need to shake down some of my friends and family for any LPs in their closets.
