View Full Version : Fashion for Nerds
LBPete 04-20-2007, 12:08 PM Many of us revel in our geekdome. But at the same time would like to be more appealing to the opposite sex. My 20 year old daughter sent me this link (http://www.fashion4nerds.com/index.htm) and suggested that I upgrade my wardrobe.
Should I be offended?

blue_lateral 04-20-2007, 01:38 PM I am a professional geek. Fashion? You have to be kidding. Just slide a pizza under the door once a day, and everything will be fine.
Sandy G 04-20-2007, 01:46 PM And just WHAT is so wrong w/the way us Pencil-Necks dress? At least we pull our trousers all the way up, DON't wear shirts that might something uncomplimentary about the copulation habits of your mother, & if we DO have a cap on, it will more than likely be turned the right way...

Words to live by,im the exact way except for clean & fitting good my wife lays out all my clothes,if not i'll go to the drawer & pick out the oldest concert t shirt & jeans with holes in em.
Pisses her off when i wear the old raggedy zappa t shirts:D
Arkay 04-20-2007, 10:45 PM That website gets one thing WRONG: it says to never tuck in a shirt. True for T-shirts, but not for collared (dress-type) shirts that have "scooped" tails. Half the women out there will tell you that look is sloppy, and will not mind/prefer that you tuck those tails in!
Several women over the years have told me the same thing, which I think is advice often given in women's magazines: they look first at a man's shoes, then at his accessories (watch, belt). If a man's shoes are expensive and stylish, they figure he is a "good" catch. If not, they figure he is careless, cheap, etc...
I know a little about fashion, having worked before in (and with) the garment/fashion industry. I always found that if I dressed too well, a lot of GUYS chased me :puke: (no offence intended - just not my thing), so I always dress a little bit nerdy or old-fashioned. It may not get me chased by as many women, either, but heck, now I'm married! :D It seems among men, only homosexuals really pay much attention to fashion.
dew042 04-20-2007, 11:26 PM Its a thin line between being a geek and being a dork.
I dress like a geek on workdays and a bum otherwise.
dew.

LDK180 04-21-2007, 12:55 AM Don't tuck your shirt in. Wear a belt.:scratch2:
Duffinator 04-21-2007, 01:13 AM I'm safe. :D Oh no they got me on the running shoes.
LBPete 04-21-2007, 12:20 PM This whole wardrobe thing came up the other day when I drove up to visit my daughter. Before leaving, my wife advised me that I shouldn’t wear “garage cloths” like I normally do. I did think this was a little odd because one of the reasons for the visit was to fix her car.
In any case I wore a pair of clean, relative new jeans, a dark t shirt with my favorite western shirt (red plaid with snaps instead of buttons). I learned a long time ago that western cut shirts fit my skinny ass pretty good.
Upon seeing my daughter, she starts in about plaid shirts and suggests I look at this web site. In any case, I took care of the chores and took her out to lunch. Later we took a walk along the beach cliffs. About half way into this walk we were stopped by a college kid doing a photography project for school. He shouted over “Cool Shirt” talking about my shirt and asked if the snaps were made from shells. I felt vindicated. My daughter just shook her head. I guess she was thinking all nerds think alike.
Later on, looking at the web site, I realized that I was following most of the guide lines. I had clean well fitting blue jeans with no holes or tears, a contrasting color t shirt, and a shirt with a collar that wasn’t tucked in.
I did not wear a belt and was wearing running shoes with white socks. These things are not recommended but nobody is perfect. Overall, I had cleaned up my act. I wasn’t wearing any of the freeby t shirts with the advertising or my typical garage jeans and shoes.
Are Women expecting us to dress like them? Do they really think that men will spend hours looking for the perfect shoes? Do they know that me seldom look at the shoes women wear?

geaugafletcher 04-21-2007, 12:27 PM I always thought un-tucked shirts were for the velco wallet crowd.

You know, I take issue with the frequent feminist complaint that men force women to look a certain way, wear high heels, etc. Truth is, women dress for each other. If women dressed for men, they'd all but expose their breasts and encourage scrutiny. As it is, more than a glance at very obviously showcased 'features', and you're branded a creep while the wearer criticizes some other females' display. :)
I'm glad to be married. (As if I gave a wet slap about dressing to attract women anyway!) My wife's first look at me - old brown leather shoes, well worn; old comfy jeans with great big hole in right knee; white t-shirt under an old red plaid flannel un-tucked button-down shirt with rolled up sleeves. Point is, when the right woman sees you, it doesn't matter. :) Nice to dress well just in general, however.
Donny 04-21-2007, 12:40 PM Lets see ratty shirt with a hole in it check, messy hair covered with a cap check, glasses check, white socks check, running shoes check, nails busted up with grease under them check, beard stubble check, I think that covers everything. I am a big do not list. For real!
Donny 04-21-2007, 12:41 PM I did get the shirt not tucked in right oops. I think my velcro wallet(with holes) makes up for it.
Sandy G 04-21-2007, 01:37 PM Women "dress for each other"...Oh boy, ain't THAT th' truth !! The hottest lookin' gal I ever dated told me that once. I thought she was kidding. Turns out she was right. This gal was SO vain, she wore pantyhose w/shorts to make it look like she had a nice tan, where she really would NOT do anything to spoil her pearly-white perfect skin...I thought all that was silly, I'd take my hangnail & give her pantyhose a rip so's she'd have to go remove 'em...she was a 38D, wanted bigger..."Power" she said. I didn't stay w/her very long.
VinylHanger 04-21-2007, 03:05 PM Heck, when I got my velcro wallet 10 or so years ago, it was hip. I figure it has to be a classic by now.
My wife has recently, like last weekend, gotten me to wear collared polo's. Of course, they have been in the closet for like 10 years as well, so they are classics as well. :D
Fisherdude 04-21-2007, 03:27 PM ... Do they know that me seldom look at the shoes women wear?

Well, actually, some of us do look at the shoes they're wearing.:D
Andyman 04-21-2007, 03:52 PM Geez, maybe they ought to key these guys in..........
LBPete 04-21-2007, 05:07 PM Well, actually, some of us do look at the shoes they're wearing.:DIs that kind of like, you can leave your hat on?

gadget73 04-22-2007, 01:36 AM I also have a lot of the 'don't' items, long hair, a goatee, and many hawaiian shirts. I refer to them as my tacky tourist attire. My long hair is more of the "i haven't had a hair cut in 8 months" style than the growing it long because I feel like it style. I need to go clothes shopping very badly. I actually realized that I do not own a single pair of jeans now that doesn't have some sort of stain from working on cars/boats. Maybe tomorrow I'll go buy clothes instead of working on the boat. I'm going to Florida next week, perhaps I should make some attempt to not look like a total bum.
Dusty Chalk 04-22-2007, 03:44 AM I don't get the "untuck the shirt" thing -- is that really so?
Also, I just started wearing glasses, I'm not ready to switch to contacts yet, but suspect I will eventually (I am vain).
And do you know what? Screw them on the long hair thing, I'm keeping my long hair.
And what the L is wrong with pleats? I thought pleats were okay, are they "out"? Dammit, I just can't keep up with this stuff...
Sandy G 04-22-2007, 07:20 AM Yeah, Screw the Fashionistas.. I can't wear contacts, because of allergy issues. Besides, my glasses have saved my eyes on any number of occasions. I still proudly wear 1973 style aviator rims-screw the narrow black plastic Emo look, too...Hell they look like serial-killer circa 1971 to me...
