I started reading the 4th book in this series since I found it at work and got hooked. What a great story. I have read 1 and 2 and working on 3 now. Many people associate him with pure horror but he has many that are not- this one has some creatures in it but nothing too bad.

I am on my third read of the entire series. It is a good one. I am writing a biography right now and I find Stephen King's writing even inspiring there. He is great at putting your imagination there, with few words, so you can experience for yourself. He really is brilliant in his style.

Long live Gilead!

Someone at work just recommended this series to me, and is bringing it to me next week.

I've also read all the books so far (I think, unless one came out since I last checked) and its a heck of a story. Many of his books have a great storyline. The Stand is also a very good read. I've never read the original, only the un-edited one thats about twice as long so I can't say if the cut version has all the character development that the longer version has.

I read all of them, but I really felt like King started to drive things into the ground by number five or so. The narrative lost focus by Wolves of the Calla, and King's style jettisoned the depth and air of mystery that kept me hooked on one through three.

If you can get the original edition of The Gunslinger, do so. King revised it a few years back, but I thought that the first one was better.

The Stand is quite good also.

I saw the unedited version of The Stand and it is a monster. I will have to find that next after this story.

I really enjoyed this one too...

I've been looking for an original version of the Gunslinger, but the first run of these was tiny in King terms, and 1st Eds go for $300+

Did they release a paperback too?

It was released in paperback, that was how I read it. It shouldn't be too hard to find the original version, it was only revised maybe three or four years ago. You shouldn't need to find a first edition.

Cool...maybe I've already read the non-revised one then!

...The First Edition thing is just that damn collector bug speaking up again I suppose!

Heh, yeah, the first editions... from what I recall not too many were printed, and like all first editions they're going to be expensive. $300 - I'm honestly surprised it isn't more than that. As for the revised edition, it should say on the front whether it is or not, and if I recall the paperback revised edition has a crow (Zoltan) on the cover.
