View Full Version : DSOTM vs. Rumours vs. Aja
Andyman 04-20-2007, 11:25 PM Everybody owns a copy of at least one of these monster 70s recordings, and many of us own all three, but what I want to know is which one do you PLAY to listen to the most. Not play to check out gear or speaker placement, not play because you have some MFSL super dee dooper high quality swell sounding recording, or not leave on the radio because it's the least obnoxious thing on right now, but dig out and play to listen too because you like the sound of the songs?
For me it's Rumours. Sure it's flyweight pop, but it brings back good memories and I find the sound much more accessible than the jazzy Aja or the spacey DSOTM.
It just makes me feel better :thmbsp:
So, what's your pick??
CarlV 04-20-2007, 11:32 PM DSOTM I never listened to Rumours if it wasn't on the radio. But then it was on the radio plenty here. Played Aja some, but it was much lighter than my norm back then.

tentoze 04-20-2007, 11:39 PM I picked up a copy of Aja last year, don't think I'd ever heard it all the way through before then. I owned Rumours when it first came out, but it went away long ago. The other one would never make it through the front door of my house.
Have owned all three, but DSOTM is long gone and don't miss it. Still have Rumours, although its never played. Prefer the Peter Green era of FM better. Still listen to Aja every now and then. Clever lyrics and cool jazzy arrangements that still sound fresh.
Arkay 04-20-2007, 11:51 PM DSOTM edges out Rumours here, but probably because I have more versions of it and I only recently got one copy of Rumours. That reflects more the order that I happened to find the disks in, rather than a deliberate decision. Sad to admit, I don't have Aja (yet! :D ). I remember playing it years ago, but it is one of those I have not yet re-acquired since getting back into vinyl. I'll pick it up when it comes along, and then perhaps the "rankings" will change.
Drybasement 04-20-2007, 11:52 PM Well, I play Aja more than the rest for sure. I've had my fill of DSoTM and Rumours.
Ask me 20 years ago and I would tell you different.
Andyman 04-20-2007, 11:53 PM Still have Rumours, although its never played. Prefer the Peter Green era of FM better.
I totally agree on the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac, but view the Buckingham-Nicks stuff as basically an entirely different band, which it really is. And viewed that way, I enjoy both "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" and even Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen"
It's really too bad more folks are into the early Mac though. Heck, most of the world thinks "Black Magic Woman" is a Santana song.............
Urizen 04-21-2007, 12:03 AM Aja, here.
I still have the all three, bought back in the day, on vinyl.:music:
stereodctr 04-21-2007, 01:50 AM I have Rumours on cd only and DSOM and AJA on cd and LP. In the past year I have played AJA on LP and CD multiple times and have not listened to the other two at all
cabinover 04-21-2007, 06:30 AM I really don't listen to any of them often but Rumours would be the first go to album. Just picked up some early FM on vinyl, that's new territory and I like it as well.
Sandy G 04-21-2007, 06:38 AM Billy Ray Puke-us !! Awrite !! <grin>
birddog 04-21-2007, 07:10 AM Aja, hands down, with DSOTM second. Just got a copy of the 30th anniversary hybrid CD DSOTM, so that has had a lot of playtime this week, but I know Aja will bounce right back!
Sandy G 04-21-2007, 09:24 AM NEVER owned any of 'em. Didn't have to. Just take a stroll thru campus, circa 1978, & more than likely one or 2-if not all three-were being played, generally in more than one location. The stoners would have DSOTM on, the "cool dudes"-jazz freaks-would have AJA spinning, & the regular Joes would have Rumours on. But being I went to college in Virginia, 1966 was never over, & some preppy was sure to have Bill Deal & the Rhondels on, too.."I been hurt, hurt, hurt, yes I been hurt"....
Mystic 04-21-2007, 09:39 AM I chose Billy Ray, but what I meant was anything but Aja, Rumours and Dark Side of the Moon. Now, if you'd nominated Katy Lied, English Rose and Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I'd have voted for... hmm... not Billy Ray.
JDaniel 04-21-2007, 09:47 AM Aja for me. This is one of those "show off your system" lps for me. Sonics are incredible. Plus, I'm just an old Steely Dan fan. When I first heard their fusion of rock/jazz, I was hooked.

JustBuyNew 04-21-2007, 10:22 AM My only reservation is Rumours is an awfully poor recording on original vinyl. Even though its great music.
BULLWINKLE 04-21-2007, 11:07 AM Rumours on Nautilus vinyl. Next up Aja and finally DSOTM (3 copies). All good, but FM is more what I grew up with and listened to.
OvenMaster 04-21-2007, 12:09 PM I have Rumours (LP & CD) and DSOTM (LP). Never liked Steely Dan. So out of all of 'em, Rumours is the least offensive.
Tom
Cosmic 04-21-2007, 12:46 PM ...well, I can't stand Steely Dan, much as I respect their musical skills (I get tortured enough by them during soundchecks as it is.)
Dark Side is the only one I have, and it gets infrequent spins (the Wall much more so). I have DSoTM on MoFi Original Master disc and it is fun to rattle the rafters with from time to time. But 'The Wall' is the better album for listening.
Best,
C
onepixel 04-21-2007, 01:16 PM Rumours.
Reminds me of another time and a very far off place. Sweet sad memories and good times.
I went to my girl friend's and she was playing my Rumours. She had a nickel on the phono headshell. Aaargh! That was the original one back in '77. I've have a 2nd and 3rd for back up, as well as the CD.
I love DSOTM and Aja and have the original vinyl bought new and the CDs. All different and all great to me.
Hey Andyman! :thmbsp:
markb 04-21-2007, 02:01 PM 1. Rumors ...recently rediscovered, never got into it in the day
2. Aja... burned out on it in the day
3. DSoTM... haven't heard since released, maybe someday
In all fairness I should revisit Aja and DSoTM. I never had a decent system until I discovered AK about a year ago. Now I'm going back through my old LPs and relistening. It's sad as I didn't take very good care of them and must replace alot. I did manage to keep them, all these years, and I'm glad I did.
NeedForSpeed 04-21-2007, 02:29 PM DSOM, a no brainer, one of the great guitarists of out time, and an underrated
song writer, way ahead of there time. Not a badly produced lp either for that matter.
VinylHanger 04-21-2007, 04:21 PM Rumours here. Though for some reason I just picked up a couple of Aja lp's recently. I had only heard them on the radio, great production, but Rumours takes me back to good times and young ladies. :D
ldatlof 04-21-2007, 04:47 PM Well, I play Aja more than the rest for sure. I've had my fill of DSoTM and Rumours.
Ask me 20 years ago and I would tell you different.
Me too. I have heard Dark Side so much back in the day that I play Aja & Rumours more now, even though I think Dark Side is easily the best album of the three. IMHO.
jasong 04-21-2007, 06:05 PM I'm young enough to not be tired of them. To choose between DSOTM and Aja, I picked DSOTM because, well...it was just on the radio, and I have the vinyl. Steely Dan is cool, but a bit "fluffy" for my taste. Great stuff, but not the kind of stuff that really hits me.
rulerboyz 04-21-2007, 06:54 PM My only reservation is Rumours is an awfully poor recording on original vinyl. Even though its great music.
Are you sure about that? I had an original Canadian copy and it sounded great.
Dusty Chalk 04-22-2007, 04:16 AM There's one restaurant I go to that occasionally has a classic rock station on -- they seem to play one song or another from Rumours pretty much every time I'm there -- so rule that one out.
I listen to the entire Citizen boxset every once in a while, so that actually puts Aja on top, contrary to expectations based on my well-documented Pink Floyd fanboyism. I have listened to DSOTM once recently, when I bought the SACD, but I really have overplayed that one to death.
That said, I'd trade 'em all in for something more contemporary -- I practically have them all memorized, they're all good, but all over-rated. Though out of all of them, my appreciation for Aja is probably at an all-time high, due to the recent clip that someone posted somewhere about that guitar solo. I never realized how supremely perfect it was until I saw that video.
marantzbe 04-22-2007, 04:20 AM I pick up DSOTM because Pink Floyd is my favourite band,
Rumours and AJA are also 2 of my favourites album.
Last thursday I just listened to Rumours (1st Us pressing) and DSOTM (MFSL) for the 300 times at least.

namahealani 04-22-2007, 05:41 AM Rumours - the West German target cd
next, AJA - original MCA cd
then, DSOTM - blackface Harvest cd, no "TO" in matrix #
Danger Boy 04-22-2007, 06:08 AM 1. Rumours for sure
2. other Steely Dan, I was never impressed with Aja. I have on vinly, and it sounds bad, might be a bad copy or something.
3. DSOTM
rickon66 04-22-2007, 02:31 PM I just bought a SACD copy of DSOM and listened to it all the way through for the first time in probably over 25 years. It was not as impressive as I remembered, kind of disappointing really. It seemed almost like a sound effects album sometimes. I guess i should have taken a mind altering substance to revisit an old legend.
Steely Dan got my vote.
I couldn't vote for Billy Ray, even though he is sort of a neighbor.
Duffinator 04-22-2007, 08:15 PM DSOTM-Vinyl, CD, SACD
Aja-vinyl (two copies)
Rumours-Vinyl, CD, DVD-A
I don't listen to any of them regularly but of the three I listen to DSOTM the most. I recently purchased DSOTM on SACD and it does sound as good and cool in 5.1 as everyone says it does. :thmbsp:
Big_Tex 04-22-2007, 11:09 PM All of these albums were recorded before I was born, so I haven't had as much time to get burnt out on them, so to speak. Of the three, I find myself listening to Aja most frequently. But if I were to pick a favorite, it would be DSOTM.

Hey didn't I give you the Rumours and Aja vinyl?! :D
Duffinator 04-23-2007, 11:27 AM Hey didn't I give you the Rumours and Aja vinyl?! :DYep. :thmbsp:
alwayslooking 04-23-2007, 01:17 PM Rumours since I am a big FM fan, and mostly after Buckingham/ Nicks joined. I feel this LP was produced very well and has a great sound to it
