I enjoy rock music played by orchestras. In the recent past I have found these three CD's at the used CD stores:

The S&M is different in that Metallica is playing with the San Francisco and while I am no metal fan...I do like that CD and play it regularly. The other two the orchestras are playing the music of Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd.

Oops, while I'm typing this I just thought of another:

Know of any others I should be on the lookout for? I know there is a a very hard to find LP with Deep Purple playing with an orchestra, which I haven't found yet.

Anyone else like this stuff?

Welcome to the dark side, Terry.:D What took you so long?

I have S&M, though it's been awhile since I listened to it.

There is a whole genre of what many call "melodic" or "symphonic" metal, much of it backed by strings and/or an orchestra, many with choirs or small vocal ensembles.

The sad thing is that very little is coming out of the States, most bands are from Europe.

I'm sure CarlV will chime in soon, but you may want to check out:

The Tea Party did one, saw it on tv but don't have a name of an album.
Also I have the Proco Harem cd were they played with the Edmonton Symphony back in 1970. Only good song is Conquistador which is awesome, rest of the CD sucks and its not rock. :smoke:
Oh, I've seen that DP one and almost bought it once out of the bargain bin. But I left it for next time I was at the store, and it was gone!

The Pink Floyd is good and you get Roger Dean artwork to boot. Have to start looking for the others in a bit.

I can't believe that nobody mentioned The Moody Blues. I think they really invented the whole Rock orchestra concept. I believe it is "Days Of Future Past" that is recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I may be wrong on these titles but I am positive that they are heavilly involved in the orchestra concept.

Also I believe most of their live shows have included an orchestra. Personally my favorite album is "In Search Of The Lost Chord".

There's a whole series of discs called "The String Quartet Tribute to..." ...whatever. The String Quartet Tribute to Dark Side of the Moon is phenomenal -- they actually play the triplets during "On The Run", for example. I also particularly enjoyed the one to New Order and Joy Division, for some odd reason.

I'd only recommend listening to ones with which you are familiar with the original music, as a couple were lost on me (Rolling Stones, OK Computer).

Vitamin records has several classical Rush tributes, including one of all of 2112!

In fact, they have quite a bunch of tributes, everything from Tool to AC/DC to Evanescence to 9 Inch Nails to Led Zep.
