Anyone know of a good tech for tube equipment in DC area? I am getting my first piece of vintge tube equipment and would like someone to take a look at it and tune it up for me before I do any harm to it.

Rob went over my Fisher 400 and tested all the tubes.

Rob Merrylander is the man. He brought my grandfather's Silvertone back to the land of the living.

Yeah I saw some tube stuff on his bench last time I was up there. I just didn't want to dump on him if there were someone else out there who might specialize in tubes.

Ken here tried a local tech once. I think he said the unit ended up in the trash after he got it back. I'll continue waiting in line for Rob rather then play with fire.

Yeah, I don't need that, considering this one is the most I have ever spent on vintage gear.

What are you looking to get done, and what? I know Deja Vu Audio sell current production high end tube equipment, maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Not to say that the other recommendations are bad ones, just offering an alternative.

I have passed by there several times and never noticed them.

Ever since they've moved into the smaller location, they're a lot harder to find. They're on the second floor of what looks like an office building full of doctors and dentists.

But they know their stuff.

You should stop by -- Vu & co. are very accomodating. But they deal in new gear, which is why I asked what he was looking for.

Vintage gear: Marantz from the 60's

You might want to try these guys (http://www.musictechnology.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=2) in Springfield. Don't have any experience with them myself, but was seriously considering getting my SCD-CE775 fixed and/or modded by them.

I will give them a call a find out what they are all about.

Thanks.

Peter,

These guys look good. The tech who I emailed uses the same amp I am looking to get serviced and is very familiar with it.

Thanks.

I've wondered about those cats, too. They appear to know their shit by their website. I have a beautiful old Silvertone hi-fi tube unit that needs a look. I'd like to know your results.

BTW, the tech to avoid is near the Vienna Metro and you can spell "DUMB ASS" with the letters in the name of the firm.

I will let you know how it goes. The good thing is that he understood about not messing with it too much to retain it's collectors value. "NO MODS"

Cool. Give us a report card, Spart. A non-Merrylander tech is hard to find in these parts.
