Hello Fellow AK'ers, I've got an intersting story I thought you'd care to read.
I recently acquired and restored a my 7th pair of big ESS speakers (AMT1d's)http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110537. I also acquired a MELOS GK-1 tube pre amp. My system up to this point were quad-amped JBL horn modded speakers and Yamaha M series SS amps: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=102992&highlight=sumo
I tested the MELOS in place of the Yamaha C70 SS pre I have been using and got less than pleasing results. Disappointment on a large scale, to put it more acurately. No goosebumps, NO MAGIC :tears:.
I've been toying with the idea of trying the MELOS with the ESS speakers. I first tried the 1d's with the C70/MX1000u/Denon DCD-1560 20bit/Sumo-M80 combo. Getting warm...
Soooooo...., I went a step further and tried the 1d's with my VTL Stereo 45, EL34 based amp, the MELOS, and the Sumo/M80 combo (crossed at 50hz). STUNNING sound!
It isin't the same animal as the big JBL system, but I love it. That GK-1 has a FAT bottom, gorgeous warm midrange and silky smooth top end. So uncomplicated. No tone controls, EQ, NADA!. Damn near "straight wire with gain" Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. The deciding factor to put my JBL's away for the time-being is the absolute simplicity and quality of the Denon/MELOS/VTL/ESS/Sumo/Yammie M80 system. MAGIC. Pictures to come. I've also got some NOS Mullard's to try in the MELOS too. Thanks for letting me share this with you.
