Hi,
I'm new to this thread but feel nostaligic towards old Sansui receivers having bought a new 8700DB receiver in 1980 when I was stationed in Korea. It was my first 'hi-fi' receiver and wish I still had it. I've looked on ebay and while they have lots of vintage Sansui receivers, that model never comes up. Was this a limited edition piece or just highly coveted and no one is letting them go? I'll eventually find one, I hope.

Regards,

Dave

Are you talking about the G-8700DB?

As far as I can tell there was no such receiver as an 8700DB. There was an 8080DB though.

Yes, it must have been the G-8700DB.

Hey Dave,
Guess what? I may just have what your looking for. Let me check this weekend. I might have a G-8700DB and from what I remember the tuner string may need replacing and the digital readout may differ from the analog. It may also need a couple of lights replaced. Other than that, it works and looks wonderful from what I remember. If you're interested in it and if you'd like to have me take it out of storage and go through it, let me know.

Ive seen a couple of G-8700'DB's on Ebay in the past, though I agree they are not that ubiquitous. For some reason, the model isnt shown in the G-9700...4700 Brochure. Seems to be the case with other Sansui 8-designated models, such as the AU-819 or AU-817, or 8900Z, they arent seen too often, go figure :dunno:

B/F (ps- by the way- the overseas versions are designated such that G-9700 is G-971, thus the 8700DB is G-871DB- has black front panel, pretty sharp looking).

Hey, that's good information (about the overseas models) as I was stumped as to where a 890DB came from.

Thanks.

Actually, that's not 'completely' correct...I bought my 8700DB at the Post Exchange in Korea and it had the silver face with rosewood color cabinet. I don't recall ever seeing any in Korea with the silver faces on them. Maybe it was black at the European exchanges? Or maybe this became true either earlier or later from the time I was there (1980-1981).

Dave- I'm not sure if I get what you were trying to say in the above message. As for the G-8700DB, they are out there if you look:

Sorry, what I meant to say was from your earlier post about the overseas editions of the 8700db having a black face, the one I bought in Korea was silver and I never saw a black one while I was there. But as I was only there a year, they could have been sold in either previous years or after I left...

Thanks for the info on the ones for sale, just wish it was in the US...

Dave

Perhaps In Korea they just carried the export (US) version.

As I mentioned before, the G-8700DB is in Silver only, there arent any of those in black, only the G-871 would be in black - it would like this G-971:

Wow,
That's interesting looking....Not sure which I'd prefer but that is for sure an unique look...

For some reason, the scan came out looking more like its in b/w rather than color- which my G-971 original brochure is in (for one thing, the power meter led's should light up in red).

Your right Ebay doesn't have to many of the G-8700Db's. I've been watching for them for over 2 years. What does get listed usually has some sort of problems. Occassionally someone lists one that is relatively nice. I managed to buy 2 broken ones AND find a place that would TRY to repair them. Turned out he had to use parts of both to make one that worked. 6 months later and $600 in costs I had my less than perfect looking but nice working G-8700Db. I must say when hooked to a CD player and a set of Pioneer CS-99A and CS-88A speakers, it was all worth the trouble and expense. These are remarkable recievers to say the least. I hope you persist in your effort to find one because like some of the other posts said, they are out there and can be had. Good Luck

We've tracked 64 G-8700DB units thru eBay in the past 3 years so, yes, they are out there. But not cheap -- average resale price was $256 US.

The black faced units were sold in exchanges in Europe. Everywhere else were the silver faced units.
