View Full Version : What do you CRANK up ?
Wardsweb 11-08-2003, 12:33 PM So, what do you put on when you want it LOUD! I'm not talking about the 1812 so the cannons approach live SPL levels. I'm talking about air guitar sceaming :guitar: , body numbing :yikes:, soul shaking (not to mention house shaking) loud  . I don't get in these moods as often since my "angry at the world" teenager years, but every now and then it's soul cleansing. I just ran some Joe Satriani "Flying in a blue dream" and "Back to shalla-bal" through my audio lab setups (HK A500 with JBL corner horns, Marantz 2270 with JBL L26's, JBL pusing some JBL mid-horns) all running at the same time and it ROCKED!
CarlV 11-08-2003, 12:57 PM The intro to Sorrow - crank it you feel it in your bones! I'm
talking loud baby! It's a good thing it's @1minute 45 secs.
Sheer electrical power with emotion.
Well that's a start.
Carl
bully 11-08-2003, 12:59 PM I've just put on Otis Redding. Gotta dance!
Either of his latest releases have some sick guitar playing and pounding bass lines that test my little 3wpc SET. Well recorded as well. There's a live track that had me looking out the window to see who was whistling. :scratch2: :screwy:  MikE
Haoleb 11-08-2003, 01:16 PM Muahaha...
Kenny Loggins "footloose" and the next track.. on the Live from the redwoods cd.
Pink Floyd- Just about all of The Wall. Specially some of the tracks on disc two
Eagles- Take it easy, hole in the world, heatach tonight. and many more.
I dunno. theres a few.
Andyman 11-08-2003, 01:22 PM Carl:
Sorrow?
Like Bowie "Sorrow"?
"long blond hair and eyes of blue,
The only thing I ever got from you
was sorrow" ? Great tune.
I've always been fond of blastin' out a couple live cuts, "Crossroads" by Cream and "One Way Out" by The Allman Brothers Band.
"Goin' Down" by Jeff Beck is pretty hot too.
I may be home alone shortly, so..............
CarlV 11-08-2003, 01:31 PM Andyman, Nope this one is on topic. Momentary Lapse of Reason,
Pink Floyd. I put most of my 400 watts of McIntosh through my
JBL's. Track 10, as Wardsweb puts it "soul cleansing"
Were talking M.F. ing loud! Not just turned up!
Carl
Wireworm5 11-08-2003, 01:38 PM Lately the only album I play at air guitar screaming volume is 'Ten Years After-Live at the Fillmore east.' I love the sound of the bass guitar. I also like blasting the song 'The Trio" from 'The Good,The Bad,The Ugly' the sound of the trumpets and the plucking of the acoutic guitar has to be played loud to be appreciated.

millerdog 11-09-2003, 04:37 AM Holy Bass lines Batman!
Geespot,
you got some Stu Hamm? Way cool! I got his "Radio Free Albemuth." I had another of his cds, but alas, the ex got it.
Stu Hamm, Jonathan Mover and Joe were doing their sound tests at a local venue a few years back. I kept yelling "STU!" I swear I heard either the band or the roadies laughing!:p:
Then during the concert, Joe and Stu were back to back riffing and there was a pause. I was in like the second row of humanity and I yelled out "STU!" again. I swear Joe smiled!
I never heard "Linus and Lucy" played on the bass guitar until I saw Stu Hamm.
Way cool!
oops! Try cranking up "baba o'reilly" and "won't get fooled again"
from Who's Next!
That rocks!:pawprint: :pawprint: :pawprint: :pawprint:

It's good to see another Deadhead on this forum.
I was gonna post stuff like Anthem and Skull & Roses and Steal Your Face, which I always crank up anyhoo:cool: but it seems that we are viewed as being a bit off center by most eveyone:p:

Jack G 11-10-2003, 12:49 PM >>>It's good to see another Deadhead on this forum.<<
I don't listen that much anymore-I've mellowed as I've aged.
>>> but it seems that we are viewed as being a bit off center by most eveyone<<<
I've gotten used to that by now.
>>>Ahhh, I really do miss Jerry.<<<
Me too. I always prefered his concerts.
Here's a tidbit for you- They got together and toured, and they were selling CDs of their concerts (the one you just saw) they burned them and mailed it to you. Cheap.
Great idea-I wished they could have done that years ago.
Jack
Dave918 11-10-2003, 12:57 PM Gotta throw something on the pile that I have crankin' right now
Gov't Mule "Rocking Horse"
-Dave
WhiteSE 11-10-2003, 01:01 PM There was a rumour awhile back of YES touring with the Dead...:dunno:
Andyman 11-10-2003, 03:46 PM I guess I just like the loud rock n' roll stuff, preferably live.
"Live at Leeds", The Who, especially "Magic Bus"
"I'm Goin' Home", Ten Years After, "Woodstock"
"Rock n' Roll", Led Zep, "Heartbreaker" too
"Stormy Monday", Lee Michaels is killer Hammond B3. Great dynamics!
"Highway Star", Deep Purple
And probably some BTO too.
I love the Dead too, but never considered them as an ear bleeding, blow your hair back, LOUD band. Just damn good music. After all.................
"There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert!"
DingusBoy 11-10-2003, 04:11 PM The Who: Who By Numbers or Quadrophenia
J Geils: Full House
The Band: The Last Waltz (especially the "blues" side with Muddy, Butterfield and Clapton)
Ten Years After: A Space In Time
Gerswin: Rhapsody in Blue
Tom Petty: Echo
Abbey Road: Side 2 continually sees me increasing the volume towards the crescendo.

G -n- R - You Could Be Mine
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Motorhead - Iron Fist

It was called trading bootleg tapes. There were always tapers at any show and you could usually get a copy within days. I've got hundreds of hours of taped shows going back to '65:rolleyes:
Andy, I agree. I've never considered them ear bleeding either. Yes, gimme Live at leeds(extended CD with live Tommy) anyday - can't believe I left it off my original post!!!
But, when I crank my system, it's usually to the Dead. Bertha or Big Railroad Blues from S&R will shake the house as will anything from Steal yer Face. And the Eleven from Live/Dead is as if they were in the room with me:D
Jack G 11-11-2003, 12:24 PM >>>It was called trading bootleg tapes. There were always tapers at any show and you could usually get a copy within days. I've got hundreds of hours of taped shows going back to '65<<<
I am well aware of the tapers.
I knew people that shlepped in mic stands, tape recorders etc., and taped the concerts, but this is ALOT easier, and better quality. I was never overly impressed with the sound quality of most of the bootlegs(or some of the recent releases). Plus, the money goes staight to the band-always a good deal.
Jack
D-Zyne 11-11-2003, 12:59 PM An interesting side-bar-
A drummer friend of mine was on tour in Japan with Yngwie Malmsteem about 2-3 years ago. They did two shows on a Saturday and Sunday in a northern city (couldn't tell ya the name), then travelled about 100 miles or so south for another show on a Tuesday. At the end of the Tuesday night show, a local girl walked up with a cd for autographs. It was a double-disc recording of the shows from Saturday and Sunday, professionally packaged and of fairly good sound quality. Looked and sounded like it came right off of the shelf at any store. Someone had bootlegged a digital recording of the shows, edited and mastered them, had them packaged complete with color photos, and distributed about 100 of them...all within a time span of less than 4 days.
