Her voice has been part of my life since very early on. Didn't care much for her Nashville glitz days, but at her most basic folk/ammercana roots I love her. -Dave Andyman 11-09-2003, 08:29 AM Based on my record collection, I'd have to say Janis Joplin, with Linda Ronstadt a close second. opt80 11-09-2003, 08:31 AM Dave I tried to do this as a poll but fell asleep at the switch. For me it has to be Linda Ronstadt. Dave there is a cd called Gram Parsons live '73 which features he and Emmy Lou.Gram as you know was a member of the Btyrds during the "Sweethearts of The Rodeo" Lp He was a genius musically who died of an overdose at the babyish age of 24 The cd is at www.mymusic.com search under Gram Parsons and Fallen Angels Dave918 11-09-2003, 08:53 AM Yup, Got it Alan. On of my favorite late evening listens :p: -Dave Thatch_Ear 11-09-2003, 10:19 PM Ella Fitzgerald mhardy6647 11-10-2003, 09:11 AM Patty Larkin Johnny 11-10-2003, 09:37 AM Shirley Manson - one of the sexiest voices around. :ntwrthy: Sinead O'Connor ummm....Alison Krauss, Emmylou is damn good. Natalie Maines. Just to name a few. J ckelly 11-24-2003, 05:57 AM I'd Second Sinead O'Connor. Chris PastorEric 11-26-2003, 04:29 PM Alison Kraus WhiteSE 11-26-2003, 04:55 PM Maia Sharp (kind of a newcomer), Deborah Holland (ex song writer and singer for Animal Logic), and now Judith Owen. Toasted Almond yeah TA. I think that one is one a couple of albums. Hmmm...I think it may be on Pure Ella too. I'll have to check :scratch2: Any recommendations on the Della Reese cd? got a favorite album? thanks Toasted Almond 11-28-2003, 01:31 PM Anything with the song "Don't You Know" on it. I have a two-album cd of hers called "The Classic Della". It is a Castle Communications product. It's catalog number is PCD 10145. It also has BMG written on it so it might be available through Columbia House (or whatever it's called now). There is no shortage of good songs on it. Thanks for asking mon! "And now Ella, and her fella, Were makin' a wreck, a wreck of Mack the Knife!" Toasted Almond gonefishin 11-28-2003, 01:39 PM I'll get it ordered today! thanks :D Toasted Almond 11-28-2003, 03:05 PM Hope you like it! The song "Don't You Know" knocks me out. Vic Damone had a hit with it in the 50's. The actual music is from a classical piece. The first time I ever heard the MUSIC, was in the 70's or 80's as the background music to a damn spaghetti sauce commercial. Haunting music, I always liked it. Then in the mid 90's, I was doing a gig as a radio station dj, at a station that only played 30's, 40's and 50's. That's where I stumbled on the Della Reese version. If you can't find it I can get the wife to burn you a copy. Just ask. Toasted Almond gonefishin 12-18-2003, 01:46 PM TA...Della is in...but she's sitting under the tree...so I'll have to wait a little bit to see what she has to say ;) thanks again>>>>> THOR 12-18-2003, 10:00 PM :p: Fisherdude 12-18-2003, 10:32 PM Diggin' through the used cd's, and found a K.D. Newer stuff I enjoy: Marilyn Mazur - Danish(?) percussionist and multi-artist. I first heard (and saw!) her live with Miles Davis in the mid 80's in Oslo. Didn't see much of Miles though, since he had his back turned towards the audience... Jennifer Warnes Cassandra Wilson - Harald mhardy6647 03-09-2004, 12:35 PM A previous post referred to Sandy Denny as the woman who 'sang' "Great Gig in the Sky". Not to be snooty but: wrong-o-rama! The vocal on "Great Gig in the Sky" was by Clare Torrey. Sandy Denny (also an excellent singer, now sadly departed, I believe) did sing harmony vocals on Led Zepplin's "Battle of Evermore". Had to clear that up... :-) jt1stcav 04-17-2004, 08:30 PM Stevie Nicks is my number one female singer! Also enjoy: Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow, Christine McVie, Björk, Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Annie Lennox, Cyndi Lauper, Ella Fitzgerald, Laurie Anderson, Patricia Barber, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Carly Simon, Joan Osborne, Deborah Harry, and Jewel...to name a few! Generally turns out to be junky recordings with bad noise problems. Can you recommend a couple for me. I like both Jazz/R&B/Gospel by Ella from the radio, but don't seem to be successful in picking up any of her good recordings. Thanks for your help. Also, Patricia Barber is great, as is some Diana Krall. Sandy Denny is also terrific, but was stopped short by her untimely demise. Rob Yamaha B-2 11-06-2004, 01:20 PM Forgot to mention Joan Sutherland, Marian Anderson, Maria Callas, Leontyne Price and Kiri Te Kanawa in an earlier post. Richm 11-06-2004, 07:32 PM I'd love to find a copy of Cafe Blue reasonably priced. Mike Mike just step up to the pump and do it. You just bought a preamp to get a better phono section, a new cartridge and who knows what else. What a perfect way to audition it. A nice THICK cafe blue LP with lots of soundstage and detail. Go for it. :lmao: Fisherdude 11-06-2004, 07:50 PM Ella, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Barbra Streisand, Cassandra Wilson, Norah Jones, kd lang, Jane Monheit, Rory Block, Diana Krall, Lizz Wright, Patti Austin, Nina Simone, Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt, give me a minute, and I'll think of six more. I will go out on a limb and say something a little controversial here. I've read several positive comments on Patricia Barber, and I bought one of her albums. Did I just buy the wrong one?? (Nightclub). Am I the only one here who thinks that she simply can't sing? She can't hit the notes. She can't carry a tune in a bushel basket. She sings in random, arbitrary keys. No, I don't think that I'm missing the point that she's trying to be new, and cutting edge, and avant garde in her interpretations. I just think she can't sing. Talk to me, guys! Help me find the true path! Clay :headscrat grumpy 11-06-2004, 07:57 PM Cant forget about big mama Thorton ! Pat barber is an acquired taste. Just remember that it is Jazz and random notes is kind of the whole point Grumpy Richm 11-06-2004, 07:59 PM Clay, I cant say since I am really not a music buff. I enjoy good music because of sonics, etc. The Patricia Barber Cafe Blue Audiophile LP is on my top 5 list of excellent sonic LP's and I have many including the entire Sheffield direct to disc collection. So from a "non music buff" I like her singing  Fisherdude 11-06-2004, 08:12 PM Actually, I like jazz, and I enjoy improvisational music. I guess I'll have to give it another try, and pick up a different album. I'll look for the Cafe Blue. I very much enjoyed her tempo and rhythm, and her piano playing is terrific. FINE! I'll give her another chance! But just this once! :D Clay Richm 11-06-2004, 10:02 PM I think Cafe Blue in 33 RPM is getting hard to find. Available in CD if you would prefer it. I see that they are now selling a 3 LP 45 RPM set of Cafe Blue. I would ASSUME it is better but you know how they "F" stuff up sometimes. I was searching for Cafe Blue and ran across this list on Audiogon. This is the TOP list of recommended recordings for what its worth. Cafe Blue being #2. 16 Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" 5 Patricia Barber "Cafe Blue" 5 Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms" 4 Eva Cassidy "Live at Blues Alley" 4 Stan Getz &Joao Gilberto "Getz Gilberto" 4 Jacintha "Autumn Leaves" the songs of Johnny Mercer 4 Steely Dan "Aja" 4 Steely Dan "Two Against Nature" 4 Muddy Waters "Folk Singer" 4 Roger Waters "Amused to Death" 3 Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Session" 3 Dire Straits "Love Over Gold" 3 Dire Straits "On Every Street" 3 Peter Gabriel "Us" 3 Lyle Lovett "Joshua Judges Ruth" 3 Pink Floyd "Dark Side Of The Moon" 3 Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here" 3 Sting "Nothing like the Sun" 3 The Who "Who's Next" As I said, I really enjoy it. One of the most musical LP's I own. Sonics are better than any MSFL I have (which in my opinion is only fair) and right up there with some rare managment only Sheffield LPs I own that they only produced 7 each of. On a 1-10 scale Cafe Blue gets 20 for recording efforts ! Sandy G 11-06-2004, 11:26 PM 1)- Britney. 2)- Madonna. 3)- Christina. 4)- Jessica. 5)- Ashlee. Trawlerman 11-07-2004, 01:44 AM I like most female artists...... being a ladies man and all that :naughty: I must say however that the female artist I respect the most is LUCY KAPLANSKY. I've seen her in concert here in the UK and was blown away by her honesty and down-to-earth personality. She is a really nice person and would probably be my dream date (Good looking, Witty, Charming, Intelligent, Loads of money etc :smlove: ) I also like in to particular order Suzy Bogguss Stevie Nicks Pat Benatar Deborah Harry Diana Krall Kelly Willis Sara Evans Terri Clark Linda Ronstadt Emmylou Alison Krauss Shawn Colvin Dolly Parton Aimee Mann Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies Maria McKee Elkie Brooks (the cover of Rich Mans Woman anybody :boink:) Natalie Merchant Gillian Welch (for that homely / lived in look of hers) Shakira Bonnie Raitt Dave918 11-07-2004, 07:06 AM Great list there Trawlerman and I agree about Lucy Kaplansky. A very under rated singer/songwriter. I have a couple of her disks now - outstanding BTW: Anyone seen the cover of the new Alison Krauss & Union Station disk - also outstanding :naughty: -Dave Sandy G 11-07-2004, 09:42 AM OK, OK, I really DON'T like much those teen queens I mentioned-altho of the sorry lot, I think Christina prolly has the best set of pipes. Where's Madogga been lately? Isn't it about time for her to re-invent herself again for the 17,134th time ? I'd think the Pious Jew gambit has about run its course. I read something on the Kabbalah a LONG time ago-long B4 the Material Girl ever knew it even existed-and it was said that proper study of the Kabbalah takes a lifetime-and even then you barely scratch the surface. Another female singer I DON'T like is that gal who screeches on that song "My Beloved"-almost as bad as that 4 Non-Blondes song of about 10 years ago-"What's Goin' On?" -Sandy G. WhiteSE 11-07-2004, 11:57 AM My favourite female artists are not commonly heard of, but they kick butt! Maia Sharp's self titled CD is great...great voice and the band behind her is top notch as is the engineering.... Judith Owen, who sometimes tours and records as a backup singer in Richard Thompson's albums and tours, and who happens to be married to Simpson's creator or producer (not shure) ,comedian Harry Shearer... I can dabble a little into Diana Krall, but no more than a couple of songs at a time... I like Rebecca Pidgeon (sp?) a bit,,,but again, in short quantities, as the last two singers sometimes get boring style-wise after a few... Dave918 11-07-2004, 12:10 PM Yep WhiteSE, Judith Owen is another overlooked gem. I have "Twelve Arrows" and "Emotions on a Postcard", but need to find "Limited Edition". All outstanding! -Dave omer 11-07-2004, 12:30 PM All you Ella fans, you must checkout Stacey Kent. http://www.staceykent.com/ Like buttah, a big stik 'o buttah. opt80 11-07-2004, 04:53 PM For you Lucy fans check out the album Cry,Cry,Cry with Lucy,Dar Williams and Richard Shindell. Not THE Sam Phillips of Stax fame but the Sam Phillips who is married to T-Bone Burnett. She did an album back in the early 90's called Cruel Inventions that is truly outstanding. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000000WHT.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Amazon.com Quietly, almost imperceptibly, Southern California thrush Sam Phillips has built up an exceptional body of work. Cruel Inventions is but the third in a gently swelling series of consistently creative, intriguingly off-center pop-rock recordings. As with all of her "Sam" recordings (prior to the mid '80s, she'd achieved considerable success in Christian music circles under her given name, Leslie Phillips), this 10-song set from 1991 is branded by a kind of chamber psychedelia (courtesy of her hubby, producer T Bone Burnett). With Van Dyke Parks, Marc Ribot, and special guest Elvis Costello helping to shape the soundscape, Phillips wafts above the cushioned din, gazing down on scenes that inspire incongruously harsh denouements. Songs such as "Lying," "Raised on Promises," and "Now I Can't Find the Door" leave one feeling unsettled...and enthralled. --Steven Stolder Highly recommended for those of you that enjoy real music and the Christina/Britney poop. Johncan 01-12-2005, 08:42 PM Lynn Canfield of The Moon Seven Times and Area The Moon Seven Times' web site: http://web.irridia.com/M7x/ Area's web site: http://info.comm.uic.edu/area/ From allmusic.com Ever wish that the Cranberries had more bite and substance, that the Sundays were less glossy, that 10,000 Maniacs were less rootsy and vocal dependent, and that one of them would acquire more chops in the rhythm section? If you had, and if you can excuse the apparent male critic B.S. that all bands with a female singer must be compared to the above, the second LP by this Champaign, IL, foursome would fill the bill nicely. The songwriting is generally genuinely strong, Henry Frayne's guitar playing is enveloping, snug, and intelligently (and deftly) developed, with just the right shimmer without being the least bit wimpy, and Lynn Canfield's soulful vocals are sweetly concerned without being melodramatic. The favorite is probably the waltz-time "Crybaby," where Frayne's guitar tickles with a smidgen of regret, and drummer Brendan Gamble's tom fills and cymbal hits are tight, tasteful, and titillating all at once. A drummer with power and a delicate touch is a pleasure. Add in the pretty sleeve work and you've got a winner. This band is a small notch above its more famous, above-mentioned contemporaries. Haoleb 01-13-2005, 01:58 AM Weeellll..... Enya. I also kinda like Borah jones and Mclaughlin but enya i find has music that isint quite as, uh female. GOD, she makes me melt away into nothing when I hear that voice...in high fidelity AM too. A couple of months ago on PBS, I saw Baez do a live concert version of "Diamonds & Rust". It had been years since I last saw her perform. When she started it on the acoustic guitar, I was thinking: "she must have done this song a million times and has to be sick of it, so let's just get the obligatory 'big hit' for the casual fans out of the way." Well, was I ever blown away. That was the most gripping and perfectly done rendering of D&R I'd ever heard - maybe the best acoustic/folk song I'd ever heard. Jay Pemberton 07-03-2006, 10:43 PM I've read all 11-odd pages of this poll so far and haven't found a mention of these: Dionne Warwick Judy Henske (I played a cut off her 1964 Elektra LP HIGH FLYING BIRD for a friend recently; she said it sounded like Janis Joplin meets early Bette Midler! Cool!! Very bluesy....best heard in small bites.) The late Lena Zavaroni. Only faintly remembered here in the US, if at all, as the little 10-year-old Scottish girl who belted out 'Ma, he's making eyes at me' in a staggeringly huge voice back in 1974. (I was 10 then as well, so you can imagine the impact on me of there suddenly being someone MY OWN AGE who was on TV AND had her own LP record out. I'd thought only grownups did or had that!) I heard nothing of her beyond appearances on Mike Douglas, Johnny Carson and Carol Burnett at that time, and managed to snag that Stax LP then too. I Googled her name back in '03 wondering what had happened to her, and only then discovered the tragic story of her life and untimely death in 1999 at the age of 35. I also got to hear a number of audio clips from her hit UK TV series in the very late '70s and early '80s. Dazzling is an understatement. (The clips, and much more, are at lena_zavaroni.co.uk.) I don't think her records are on CD (save for what may well be needle drops)....you can imagine what my dream remastering job is after reading this, can't you? :D Magnat10 08-04-2006, 09:36 AM Patsy Cline Glen B 08-04-2006, 01:32 PM I have several personal favorites but if I must pick only one it would have to be Marilyn Scott. http://www.marilynscott.com/mscott/index.html Dusty Chalk 08-04-2006, 01:35 PM Camille (French lass -- just amazingly creative and capable and charismatic) Madeline Peyroux (?sp) -- crooner/chanteuse type Toni Halliday (Curve, rocker) Tori Amos (pianist extraordinaire...and a pretty good songwriter, too) Heather Thompson (Tapping The Vein lead singer -- versatile rocker) Matinicus 08-15-2006, 10:36 PM Diana Krall.........any of her stuff. Toasted Almond I have that one on vinyl, In order of preference Ella, Sarah, Della, Nancy Wilson, Julie London and dont laugh, but I like a lot of the stuff Doris Day did in the 50's and early 60's Saratoga48 03-31-2007, 08:11 AM Have given your recommendation a spin in SACD format. While the recording is great and so is the performance, I am looking for more of a "belt it out" and "in your face" type of music from Ella. Some gospel or faster, harder hitting music, like blues, perhaps. If you or Harald have any other recommendations I would be willing to try them, as well. Thanks. Try "Ella and Basie" on Verve, 1963, Arrangements by Quincy Jones, Some good numbers there, and also Mastered very well, The Basie orchestra comes through nicely without overshadowing Ella some of the numbers include Honeysuckle Rose, 'deed I do, Them there Eyes, Satin Doll, I'm beginning to see the light, Ain't Misbehavin. 70salesguy 03-31-2007, 08:49 AM Tough call between Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson (Heart) and Sarah Brightman. Happy to see Rindy Ross (Quarterflash) mentioned, Martha Davis (Motels) very good at the time. Also enjoy Nanci Griffith. Haven't yet seen her mentioned. Estring 03-31-2007, 11:59 AM Lou Ann Barton. She was part of Double Trouble with Stevie Ray Vaughn briefly before he hit it big. She only has three albums out, "Old Enough", "Forbidden Tones" and "Read My Lips". "Forbidden Tones" is horrible. She tried to be a pop star on that one, but the other two are great examples of Texas style blues and rythm and blues. If you like a blues belting woman, she is tops. pmsummer 03-31-2007, 12:05 PM http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/4/697992/lou%20ann%20150%20dpi.JPG Clarence 03-31-2007, 01:28 PM Time to pick one Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs fame. She does a version of "Sentimental Journey" backed by Les Brown's orchestra that gets to me real good. Ultra-Hog 04-07-2007, 09:34 PM Has anyone mentioned Dion Warwick? When she worked with Burt Bacharach the results were magical.:music: She is one classy lady! Ultra-Hog 04-07-2007, 09:37 PM Oh, we can't forget the smooth enchanting voice of Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac. :music: LPD 04-08-2007, 04:56 PM Not sure if its on the list, but Alison Krauss has one of the sweetest human voices I've ever heard. doctorbongo 04-08-2007, 06:01 PM Emmylou Harris was on PBS with Mark Knopfler last night. She's as good as it gets. She can stand there in the background and provide perfect harmonies, or step up into the spotlight and totally carry the tune. There was one song toward the end of the program, and I only caught four songs, on which she starts by playing the guitar. Keep in mind she was doing a duet with Mark Knopfler. 6thumbs 04-08-2007, 06:16 PM Mama Cass Elliot and don,t beat on me ,,,Karen Carpenter doctorbongo 04-08-2007, 06:21 PM Hey, 6thumbs, no laughing matter on Karen Carpenter. The songs and arrangements were sappy, but who couldn't appreciate the purity of her voice? And Richard had nice hair. Cass carried most of those Mamas & Papas tunes (I know, we always thought it was Michelle Phillips). Michelle was a great looking girl but if anybody listened to mamas and papas ,,cass elliot was the power voice of the two ,, and i think purity describes karen carpenters voice ,, she could bring a tear to your eye chuckworkb 06-15-2007, 12:20 PM in the past - Linda Ronstadt - she used to be pretty hot looking back in the day and had a terrific voice too. Norah Jones Natalie Merchant - I have been listening to a lot lately. The Wilson sisters from Heart used to be pretty good. Georgia O'Keefe. :thmbsp: fiddlefye 06-30-2007, 01:36 AM Ok, Natalie Merchant is a good choice, especially the live album. Holly Cole is great, her live show at the Magic Bag many years back was the best live show I've ever heard. Sarah Vaugh is still hot after all these years! Anyone like Madelaine Peyroux? JohnnyMarks 08-08-2007, 12:17 PM Diane Schuur fer sure!! centralflori 08-19-2007, 09:17 PM I read this whole thread!! Lots of great artist mentioned here, some I'm familiar with and agree, some I am looking forward to checking out. I'm sure I won't remember all my favorites and the top of the list changes from time to time. A current partial list: Patty Griffin ( Incredible Singer/Songwriter) Lucinda Williams Gillian Welch Tori Amos Julie Miller Shea Seger (This I believe is a new one to the list, does anybody know what happened to her? Where did she go?) Janis Ian (Saw her this past year with about 200 other people. She stayed after the show and signed anything and everything, as much as you wanted, for anyone that wanted. What an incredible talent. Solo, just her voice and guitar! One of a kind story teller and engaging stage presence.) Jonatha Brooke Mary Gauthier Sinead O'Connor Ani Difranco Kasey Chambers Lori Carson JohnnyMarks 08-20-2007, 07:40 AM "Kinky Friedman And The Texas Jew Boys." I produced "Pearls In The Snow" with Kinky with Kacey Jones. We Used the big and little studios at "The Sound Shop" in Nashville, "Bismeaux" in Austin and one in L.A. On the CD were friends Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton, Lee Roy Parnell, Asleep At The Wheel (Ray Benson owns Bismeaux Studio), The Geezinslaws, Dwight Yoakam, Guy Clark, Marty Stuart, Tompall Glaser, Billy Swan (who was working at SUN in Memphis at the time), Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits and many more. Everyone worked for scale..as they were doing it for Kinky who wanted a tribute album to himself before he died! He wrote all the songs. Don Imus did the photo for the CD. |
