Bottom line up first: this is the best CD player I have ever listened to period, and I’ve listened to a bunch of them. That’s it, that’s the whole story. You want a top-flight CDP? Give the JD-100A a try, IMO you won’t find any better for the price.

Build quality is first rate, all heavy gauge metal throughout. The heavy brushed aluminum face plate has a clean easy to use layout. The chassis is rock solid, total unit weight is 20+ pounds. Fit and finish are superb. Even the remote is made out of heavy aluminum!

Inside is one of the cleanest, neatest layouts I’ve ever seen. Each of the major sections (tube output, transport, headphone/power) are separated by large full length metal shields. There are two large transformers to power the transport and audio circuits independently. Not an op-amp to be seen, the headphone amp uses MOSFET devices. There are two 12AX7A tubes at the heart of the output section and the sound quality they provide is outstanding. The output is a true tube gain stage; after the DAC, the signal processing is tube, not solid-state. Rounding things out is a top of the line Phillips transport section that is completely silent.

So, how does it sound? In a word – superb. The technology simply disappears and leaves only the music. Bass is nice and tight, mid-range is full and smooth, and the high-end is clean and extended. IMO – it does not sound like a CD player, at least not like I’m used to. I can listen for hours on end (and believe me I have) with absolutely no fatigue. I’m listening to Van Morrison “What’s Wrong With This Picture” as I type and I don’t hear a CD player – I hear the music! My entire CD collection has been renewed; it’s like listening to them again for the first time. I love this player!

Now I’m being told that as good as this unit sounds, it can sound better with different tubes. The stock tubes are good, but changing out to some good NOS tubes will blow me away. Ok, I’ve got some NOS RCA’s on the way. I’ll update this review after I try them out.

Boy, just stepped back a re-read this. LOL! Sounds like I’m trying to sell these things. Well, of course I'm not, but I’m also not going to change a word because it does accurately reflect my opinion. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

My thanks to Brian over at Venus Hi-Fi for recommending this CDP, and his valuable assistance in assembling this system. Thanks Brian!

Just ordered mine yesterday from Brian, I can't wait. I sold my AH! and just miss that sound that a tube CD player can make. Mine won't be going into a tube amp, SS for me.

Coments not related to the very well thought out and written review have been deleted. While I found the opinions and info comparing the Jolida to the Shanling interesting but they need to be in another thread which I will start. This is only to protect the reviewer as reviews are NOT subject to differences of opinion or comparisions to products not in the review.
This is to encourage serious reviews in the hope that we will get many more of them.
Thank you for your understanding.

Ok, so I couldn't wait till this weekend to put the NOS RCA tubes in, so shoot me! That’s right, I just couldn’t stand it, had to do it tonight. So, I start out listening to my favorite song (It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference) on the Alison Krauss CD “Forget About It”. Listened to it several times, then shut everything down and swapped tubes. Spun up the same song and…and…sorry guys – my jaw just didn’t hit the floor as expected, but does anyone know how to make the hair on the back of your neck lay back down? Damn, it sounded so real, like I could reach out grab Alison up in my arms! Can’t quite put my finger on exactly where I hear the biggest difference yet, I’ll have to listen to a variety of music before I can do that. Right now it seems to have made an improvement all across the spectrum, maybe more focused in the mid-range/mid-bass area creating a fuller more life like sound. Anyway – boy do I love tubes!!!

Sure is funny how a nice NOS tube can change the sound dramatically over certain Chinese or Russian crap. Not all Chinese/Russina tubes sound bad but many do and the differance can be hair raising to say the least. When I put NOS tubes in my Wright pre amp it was huge the differance. Glad you broke down and did it you gutless, spinless, weak, audiophool! LOL :nutz:

You guys have got me goin, now! My Jolida is supposed to arrive probably tomorrow. First new piece of equipment I've bought in 2 years and the first "quality" CD player I've invested in.

Dave, did you have to put some hours on this player or did it sound that good out of the box?

TIA

Jon:)

Sounded great out the box JonTee, and just keeps getting better. So yes, a few hours burn in does make a difference.

You guys do realize that CDs will be obsolete in 5 years don't you? :p:

This is a reference to another thread in case you didn't know.

I assumed that would happen eventually. However, that should bring the price of cd's down to current prices for vinyl at thrifts and garage sales; about 10 cents to $1:D
