Some thing a little out of the ordinary for me...

http://www.theiowa.net/bohhey/maple/

I linked it to this website (of which I have absolutely no affiliation with) in order to provide you with some high quality and detailed pics.

I went to the local "fun" lumber dealer and picked out a piece of curly maple lumber. I selected it because of the fiddleback in it. To bring it out, I applied a light stain before a tung oil topcoat.

The center deck is 1/4" tempered masonite. I have programmed the cut out into a computer controlled router. Very precise and very quick.

I copied the original United Audio design including the way that the dust cover hinges. One thing different - I added a MDF bottom panel. recessed and painted black. That really added mass (it weighs 7 pounds). It is modeled with a Dual 701 and a Shure Super Track II.

Something different and something fun! Trying to figure out what to try next.

Trying to figure out what to try next.

Make an oak one for my Thorens! Naw, just kidding.

Great job, really eye catching. :thmbsp:

Looks great in that timber- it must keep you very busy. Will the Dual badge originally fitted on the lower left front be fitted to any of these?

That is some real eye pleasing lumber...

You could use a badge - I have several. I chose not to. I also toyed with making the stainless steel strip found on some European versions and inlaying it. At the end of the day, I elected to follow the KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid!) and let the maple speak for itself.:music:

But, adding the heavy bottom, similar to the way Thorens does it made a BIG difference - I was quite surprised. Seth has further damping techniques previously posted on this site that I may have to try.

Bill,

Very, very nice. But we all know that such a fine piece of art deserves something better, like a Dual 1219.

Seth,
I'd be disappointed with less!!

But, as you know, the low profile dust cover hits the 1219/1229 round gimbal and does not work. I like this appearance!!

I once made a white oak base for my 701. No pics, as I am analog only. Not as nice as your project, but I think the light-colored wood looks quite nice.
B.T.W., the oem d.c. from my 701 works well with the Scandanavian base and the 1219.

I'm surprised.

I've got one of those bases in stock - I'll play with it tomorrow. Maybe I can change where I machine in the groove for the masonite deck to let it work.

The fun of doing something from scratch - MODIFICATIONS!!

But, still true to the original design intent - that's just me.

The oak looks nice, but I bet a base in a darker colour like a cherry or something would be a real knockout. A cherry that matches my speakers, wow :)

And I think the United Audio badge would be a nice touch too.

It's a lot of fun to do isn't it!

Excellent job - it looks beautiful! :thmbsp: I especially like the way that extra piece in the base visually picks up the black parts of the TT.

One of my 1219s came in a cruddy old fisher plinth that needs replacement. The dust cover is useable, but the plinth is cr*p. You're giving me real inspiration and some good ideas for what to replace it with - thanks! :D

Hi Mel:

It is fun. The last hurdle I have to overcome is making dust covers. I heard that there is some company in Corvallis, OR offering reproductions (no affiliation)for $59.00 a pop. That's not bad, but I've got to do some more digging.

The company is having these dust covers made in Florida with shipping to run 20.00. They only talk about clear Plexiglas with no logos on them. Even my most clear Dual dust cover has a slight brownish tint and all my earlier ones are much darker. I will wait, bet your spin on the dust covers works the best.

I have considered making a dust cover myself using matching wood sides and a plexiglass top and face, just haven't tried it yet. :scratch2:
