Recently acquired a new record playing rig, Technics SP-25, Grace 707 and Garrott P-77, primarily for the TT and TA. Not familiar with the cartridge though and am looking for thoughts from those with P-77 experience.

Not familiar with the cartridge though and am looking for thoughts from those with P-77 experience. persil 06-07-2007, 04:13 PM The Garrott Bros were based in Australia and did some great retips and reworks. They were very highly respected, so much so I sent two of my cartridges from the UK for them to perform their magic! Some products they were especially known for were the Decca London MCs and the A&R P77. The Garrott Decca's are a dream come true! and highly respected here in the UK. The standard P77 was a good MM cartridge but the Garrott makeover made it shine! I cant remember the stylus profile they fitted though (but poss a shibita type??), I still have the Garrott Decca London Gold, a very fine, but very individual cartridge. Have the P77 checked out for wear, if its got some life in it use it. or sell it for a good return. The Garrott Bros are no longer with us, A very sad ending in 1992, search on the net and I am certain you will agree. I was told that the Garrot P77 was among the best of the MMs around. It wasn't cheap! LousyTourist 06-07-2007, 06:22 PM I owned a Garrott P77 for a couple years. Liked it so much I upgraded to the Garrott Optim FGS a year ago, and since then I've been in vinyl heaven. Haven't felt the slightest desire to go any further up the food chain. Still have the P77 in a box somewhere. I'll never sell it. theophile 06-08-2007, 12:36 AM persil, When the brothers lived in Avalon in Sydney,I bought a Decca Gold off them.Lovely gentlemen.Shame about their ending.:tears:  persil 06-08-2007, 03:14 AM This thread has made me put the Garrott Decca London back in service. I forgot what nice cartridges these are! Ive heard that the "New" Garrott Bros company isnt a scratch on the old one! Any of you guys delt with them? I would like to give the Decca London a retip! I looked at their site and I notice that they still use the A&R P77 body on some of their current cartridges? prooving how good this old cartridge must be. ponderbear 08-04-2007, 12:30 PM I have one of the A&R E77s in need of a replacement/retip. Does anyone know for sure if the Garrott P77 replacement will work for the E77? Or what will work? It seems Needle Doctor will retip a Garrott elliptical for $185- right now that looks like my only choice. |
