View Full Version : I need some subwoofer help for my mac
JohnThomas 06-07-2007, 11:35 AM I'm out of the loop on subwoofers for HT only. I've sold my B&W ASW 800 and need something that gives a clean tight bass that also may have some synergy with all my mac stuff beside a mac subwoofer. I've been reading info on SV Sound,REL,and HSU research. I'm borrowing a Velodyne 1200SLR and it's just OK.I realize that the 1200SLR is small for the room but I don't like my windows to rattle. Room dimensions 15x32 9ft ceilings. Any help would be appreciated.
That's a pretty good size room, you may want to consider multiple subs. In a much smaller room I am using an ACI ForceXL with Magnepan 3.6 speakers. ACI makes a couple of other larger subs too, the Titan and Maestro. They use sealed boxes so bass is tight and fast. I'm happy with the Force in my room. They sell direct over the Web. Not sure if the moderator will allow me to post the link but if you search on ACI or Audio Concepts Inc you'll find them.

In a room that size my vote goes for the REL Stentor III. Expensive but worth every penny. If you really want to "get crazy", REL Studio III, down to 9Hz. :yikes:

Glenee 06-07-2007, 09:24 PM Take a look at a JL Audio Phathom. Just do a search and read the facts. Looks good.

$5000/$9000 grand for REL subwoofer to make HT explosion sounds is pretty steep. There's got to be a better way.

I missed the fact that you want to use it for HT. I think you will find Velodyne may do the job.
Glenee 06-08-2007, 08:59 AM The JL Audio sub that I told you about, is making some serious waves in the audio industry for both HT and Audio arenas. Just take a Look at the comparison to the subs mentioned above and you will see what I am talking about.

mike175gr 06-08-2007, 01:41 PM I was reading about the REl and am very interested. I don't really understand how it gets hooked up though. If you connect it via the "high level" connection (off of the amps) do you also connect it via the LFE RCA connection from the processor as well? If not, how does the sub get the LFE signal from the processor?

There certainly was a better way for me. I purchased my first PC112 from AudioClassics for $1,450 as A1 Mint. I got a 400 watt Mcintosh amp with a long throw 12" LD/HP woofer built in a beautiful monumentally rigid cabinet. Both my PS112 subs used in combination with my LS340 speakers and MA6500 amp changed my whole concept about how music is suppose to sound.
