Working on cataloguing my music collection (at #1427 and still have a ways to go) and discovered, to my surprise, another Marta Sebestyen album I didn't even know I had. Ah, the mysteries of what lurks on the bottom shelves. Giving it a spin now and enjoying some fine, albeit unusual Hungarian folk with Marta providing vocals. It's made the task worthwhile.

Wil Blades - Sketchy

On the recommendation of forum member theWB and after listening to a few snippets over at cdbaby, I ordered this album. Let me just say this folks, if you like a little Hammond B-3 in your jazz ala Jimmy Smith, or better yet, Joey DeFrancesco, then this will not disappoint. Very enjoyable. Thanks for pointing this out to me theWB.

Wil Blades, (organ); Dayna Stephens, (ts); Gabe Eaton, (as); Michael Rinta, (tb); Will Bernard, (g); Idris Muhammad, (d).

Recorded March 21, 2007.

Edit: I should also point out that this is Wil Blades' first session as a leader.

When I last visited David (Detroit Jazz Fest) I inquired about Peter Green's Splinter Group and he played one for me (the s/t album). I liked it so much I borrowed his stash and copi... er, I mean, archived them. The two I played today came from your collection. So, I thank you also Byron. Great stuff.

Glad you liked it.

It is pretty varied, but having thousands of LPs and CDs around helps. That and the plethora of music torrent, blog and private forum sites where so much high-quality, digital music is available. It's getting to the point where nothing is per se out of print; if the record or CD isn't available -- or if it carries an ungodly price tag -- you can usually find a digital version of it, and very often in a lossless format. The sage advice that our own CarlV has provided to me concerning the software necessary for negotiating all of the different digital file formats, the procedures for using torrent-pulling (and putting) software, and selecting an outboard hard disk in order to store all these digital bytes has been invaluable. :D

Bill

Bill,

It's very amusing. :D

Actually it is very good. The whole album has a war, death, irony theme. Very mersmerizing and thought provoking.

It's starts off like you're switching tv channels.

Spoken
[Alf Razzell:] "Two things that have haunted me most are the days when I
had to collect the paybooks; and when I left Bill Hubbard in
no-man's-land.

"I was picked up and taken into their trench. And I'd no
sooner taken two or three steps down the trench when I heard a
call, 'Hello Razz, I'm glad to see you. This is my second night
here,' and he said 'I'm feeling bad,' and it was Bill Hubbard,
one of the men we'd trained in England, one of the original
battalion. I had a look at his wound, rolled him over; I could
see it was probably a fatal wound. You could imagine what pain
he was in, he was dripping with sweat; and after I'd gone about
three shellholes, traversed that, had it been...had there been a
path or a road I could have done better. He pummelled me, 'Put
me down, put me down, I'd rather die, I'd rather die, put me
down.' I was hoping he would faint. He said 'I can't go any
further, let me die.' I said 'If I leave you here Bill you won't
be found, let's have another go.' He said 'All right then.' And
the same thing happened; he couldn't stand it any more, and I had
to leave him there, in no-man's-land."

At the last songs ends...

A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

Tad Weed, Kurt Krahnke and Sean Dobbins - Odyssey

Recorded live at The Firefly Club, Ann Arbor, MI on February 10, 2006.

Tad Weed, (p); Kurt Krahnke, (b); Sean Dobbins, (d).

The is a piano trio that Dmax99 (David) and his wife saw in person a couple of weeks back at the same place we saw Cedar Walton. They were selling ceedees and I had previously asked David to get me one if he thought they were any good. Well, he was right. This is damn good music but I'm a sucker for piano trios anyway.

Cheers

Elvis Presley - "Elvis At Sun"

If anyone wonders why they call him "The King" all they have to do is play this and they'll understand.
