Uh oh..........I better not go there. I feel my wallet crawling outta my britches.
BTW, for anyone who never heard of Will McLean, a native son of my home state, Florida, and considered the "father of Florida folk music." Genius. And was quite a character as well. Hard to find any of his music unless you get to his website and order direct. All lo-fi due to the age of the recordings.
opt80 07-01-2004, 10:50 AM Eric, you would love this site, man it has everything and prices are decent
they even have a *hard to find* section, the site is now book-marked
Dave I told them you steered me to the site, maybe they'll send you some free polycarb

reyneman 07-01-2004, 10:52 AM More from the archives:)
Johnny Rivers' 'Slim Slo Slider' (Imperial Records LP16001)
This record sounds better than I remember it sounding- rarely played as it contains none of pop I usually listened to.
Nice mellow tunes, good production (usually happens when the artist gets involved there). I Likes! Glad it didn't float my boat at a younger age, helped preserve it;)
reyneman 07-01-2004, 11:27 AM Moving up a decade or two...
Lionel Richie 'Can't Slow Down' (Motown 6059ML, 1983)
Another piece of vinyl I rarely listened to- must be NM!!
This guy's a pop tune generator, but there are quite a bit of nuances contained in some of these tracks. Enjoyed it immensely now, again I'm glad I didn't play the pop hits when current.
OK, many of these were my wife's picks back in the day. Yeah, that's the story I'm sticking to for now;)
Trawlerman 07-01-2004, 01:20 PM Right now.....

CarlV 07-01-2004, 07:04 PM I finally got down to learning this VPI record cleaner. I'm playing
my first victim, Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks' Stricking It Rich album.
Amazing is this cleaner and so easy you wonder what you miss in the directions. A great record is great once again! :)

Johnny 07-08-2004, 12:52 PM Jeffrey Foucault - Miles From Lightning.
If you do not own this you need to go out and buy it right this minute.
John
Nice to see someone listening to Patti Smith. Great album. "Til Victory" and "25th Floor" are two of my favorites and "Because The Night" of course, is a classic! I pulled this out today to give it a spin. Sadly, alot of what is says still holds true. :(
Johnny 07-08-2004, 02:19 PM Diana Krall - Stepping Out.
Just a dead quiet album. Beautiful. Fantastic bass player on this one, Diana can hold her own on the piano.
She can hold mine too if she wants

CarlV 07-08-2004, 06:05 PM Earlier in the garage I played Ghost Of A rose by Blackmore's Night after the radio got sucky. Their cover with Candice's incredible vocal of Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust is worth the price of the album on it's own but it is all so good.
I fired up my set's now inside, they've been idle for days. Now
playing Muddy Waters Songbook By the Groundhogs. TS McPhee
smokin that guitar.

AlphaLimaXray 07-23-2004, 12:29 AM Just finished with Neil Young's "Harvest"
I'm not that keen on the two grandiose orchestral tracks- with a voice and a style like his, it always comes off rather overblown. They just don't mesh, at least not here.
The rest of the album is absolutely superb, though.
Cheers.

Soundtrack to Disney's Lilo & Stitch. Absolutely fabulous recording. :hdphones:

JDaniel 07-29-2004, 08:49 AM Listening to Kathleen Edwards - Failer to start off the morning.
Next, I'll be moving on to a Ryan Adams compilation that a friend of mine in the UK sent me. 21 songs spanning six R.A. albums. Looks mighty tasty.
What are you blokes listening to this fine day?

A 2 disk set, 1 early days and 1 later live shows, excellent!
Note to myself, SS pre and SET amps don't mix.
Carl
tentoze 08-06-2004, 12:59 AM Bob Neuwirth, Havana Midnight - you should all be listening to this one ( at least some of you- youse know who you is).

I second that, Alpha. I bought Under a Blood Red Sky after seeing the concert on the red rocks on TV. I just got my LP back after a 10+ year stay with my brother. I eventually lost interest in U2 after The Joshus Tree, but this live album has great energy and sounds fresh as ever!
Cheers!
- Harald
JDaniel 08-12-2004, 07:24 AM Funny, but I listened to Under a Blood Red Sky this week too. I've always been partial to that album. Alas, I too lost interest in both U2 and R.E.M. at about the same time.
My morning drive time is Derek Trucks Band - Live At Georgia Theater, Disc 2.
JD
Dave918 08-12-2004, 07:31 AM Listening to 10,000 Maniacs ~ Our Time In Eden this morning.

more tunes from the Morada Music (http://www.moradamusic.com/index.html) label, with awesome recording quality of coarse. ;)
stereofisher 08-12-2004, 06:22 PM As posted earlier I am off today and should be doing laundry. Went the Sal Army here in New Paltz NY. Have not been since June. Its raining and nothing to do.
Ran Linda Ronstandt "Prisoner in Disguise and Simple Dreams. They were in mint condition. Got a little burn't out in the '70s but she sounded good today. As noted I did an comparison of Ace of Bases "Dont turn around" singles LP to my CD. While the CD sounds good on my set--the LP is BETTER:D The Dvorak was clean and sweet sounding on a London FRRR. My only disappointment is the Beethoven Concerto # 5 on a 1957 RCA. Looks good but kind of tired:( Giving the Duals a workout.
Should do laundry, but have to go out to do it:mad: Need to find a woman who loves music, with love me:D and has a big room for all my toys and a place for a shop:D
Cheers

JDaniel 08-12-2004, 08:23 PM Today's listens have included:
Derek Trucks Band - Live At Georgia Theater (if you are into jam bands, you'd like this. Ilika.)
Beat the Retreat - Songs By Richard Thompson
Huey Lewis & the News - Four Chords and Several Years Ago (H.L. doing old soul and blues classics).
and two discs I picked up on the cheap today:
U2 - 7 (Seven song EP. Fantastic version of "Big Girls Are Best", and a cool acoustic version of "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of) Cost me a whoppin $2.48 new still with the condom on it.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Let Me Up I've Had Enough. Very good album. Paid $1.74 new also at Target.

opt80 08-25-2004, 11:53 PM Apostle of Hustle ... Folkloric Feel
:D :D :D
Kinda different, features the lead singer of Broken Social Scene and Feist(she was the female folksinger I raved about couple mos. ago)
Sound is different, they use a lot of percussion.I got the cd at Indigo,I had no idea of what is was,but it sorta beckoned"buy me"
It would be a good cd for testing new gear as the range is xcellent.I sit typing and adjusting volume at the same time.
Alan
AlphaLimaXray 08-26-2004, 12:13 AM Another album I haven't listened to in a really long time- Robert Plant's "Now And Zen". A decent 80's effort, with songs ranging from middling(i.e. a tad tacky or stale) to pretty good- and "Ship Of Fools" one of finest tracks of the decade.
Cheers.

SACD hybrid sampler from HighNote records.

Tracks: The Governor; GF'S Attitude; Live Bait; Off the Hook; The Cat; The Hat Man; Peach Cobbler; Sweet Sucker; Another Joe.
JDaniel 08-26-2004, 08:54 PM I listened to a couple of very very good discs today.
The first I am embarrassed to say I've had for over two months now (maybe longer), and just listened to it today. It somehow got lost in the shuffle of tons of new music, a new baby, etc... Dave918 sent it to me. It is Greg Brown - Milk of the Moon. I was blown away by this album. Listened to it twice in a row. Sort of reminds me of Delbert McClinton at times, and Tom Waits at others.
Also listened to Keb Mo - Big Wide Grin. He does a really cool cover of the OJay's "Love Train" that features the banjo, if you can imagine that.
Tonight I hope to spin Rickie Lee Jones s/t, and Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing.
JD
tentoze 08-27-2004, 12:06 AM Kidz are watching Olympics in the LR, so I'm screwed 2nite- this new place is cool, except that it's a duplex and the only shared wall with the other 1/2 is my bedroom, which means I'm a bit hesitant to set up a system in there, and bring down the wrath of new neighbors
Sheesh.
AlphaLimaXray 09-02-2004, 02:14 AM Another late night.:grumpy:
Got some Vince Guaraldi Trio playing. Good collection; too bad over half of it's in mono, but it's well remastered. Man, does this music bring back memories! And "Linus And Lucy" is such a classic track.
Cheers.

Andyman 09-02-2004, 08:05 PM Playing some of those old mono gems I found 2 weeks ago.
Just finished "Garden of Joy" by The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.
Andyman 09-02-2004, 08:08 PM Now playing "Absolutely Free" by Thr Mothers of Invention.
Does that bring back high school memories!!
BTW, this mono stuff has some nice sound. Sturdy vinyl too.
Next up The Thelonius Monk Quartet "Monk's Dream"

The majority of tunes I buy are recommendations one of you three told me about.

JDaniel 09-09-2004, 08:40 PM 8 p.m. and this is the first daily post???? Where is everybody?
My listens so far today have been:
My new Lucinda Williams comp. I swapped out a song for a different one. A big improvement.
Also listened to a 1967 blues recording by Driftin' Slim & His Blues Band - Somebodty Hoo-Doo'd The Hoo-Doo Man. If you like a blues harp, you'll love this. Thanks CarlV.
Listened to the new Viktor Krauss (Allison's brother) album compliments of opt80. Very good album, and very different from what I expected.
Now I'm playing Tony Rice - Backwaters.

harhau 09-16-2004, 04:30 AM Dave Brubeck quartet on a very good night in a very good year... "The Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall" from 1963. On a double album (Columbia C2S 826).
What a toe-tappin' foot-stompin' treat! My acquaintance with Dave Brubeck thus far has been limited to the usual (studio?) versions of 'Take Five' and 'Blue Rondo a la Turk' - very nice in their own right. Here, on this live recording from Carnegie Hall, the Dave Brubeck quartet adds a whole new level of nerve and energy to these well known songs. What is even better are the songs that I did not know, such as 'King for a Day' and 'Castillian Drums', played by a energetic cheerfully swinging tight-knit group surrounded by an enthusiastic audience. Can it get better? Not much!
I paid a grand total of $1 for this double album at the SA. Can it get better? Not much!
Have a good day!

JDaniel 09-16-2004, 07:51 AM Nothin' but watching local news and the weather channel. Ivan is quickly approaching.

Muse Blues
Hometeam Crowd
B Side
Side Two:
Neeless To Say

JDaniel 10-20-2004, 11:04 PM Earlier today it was The Austin Lounge Lizards - Creatures From The Black Saloon, w/ guest Junior Brown.
Now it is some newly acquired vinyl:
Dickey Betts - Atlanta Burnin' Down (1978) w/ guest Bonnie Bramlett. Scary good, this one is.
Stevie Wonder - Looking Back (Limited Edition 3 record set)
I'm headed out on a 3 day field trip with the boys in the morning. I've been selecting my tunes to take on the tour bus. So far, I've selected:
Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues - The Allman Brothers
The Band of Blacky Ranchette
Ryan Adams - Love is Hell Part 1
Johnny Lang - Long Time Coming
Chet Atkins & Mark Knopfler - Neck & Neck
That should hopefully carry me through. That, and a John Grisham novel (The Testament).
JD
Music For Modern Living 2 CD sampler, next up, 50 Cent Guess Who's Back.
aystrick 10-21-2004, 01:50 PM Blind Boys of Alabama "Spirit of the Century" Saw these guys on Austin City Limits, amazing vocals, very soulful.
next...
Miles Davis "Birth of Cool"
CarlV 10-21-2004, 06:11 PM I'm playing Asleep At The Wheel's Swingtime album. This one reeks Bob Wills
which is why I like it so. It is sounding really great on my Fisher 500 receiver I got back today from Terry performing his magic on it. :thmbsp:
Carl
CarlV 10-21-2004, 07:00 PM I'm checking out the phono section now with Tour de France from Kraftwerk.
Very nice indeed.

Andyman 10-21-2004, 07:52 PM Picked up Dave Alvin, "Ashgrove" from the library last week and can't seem to get it out of the CD in the garage.
When I do, it's been replaced by that Chet Atkins/Mark Knopfler "Neck in Neck" that JDaniel mentioned and Robert Randolph and the Family Band, "Live at the Wetlands"
Damn, I LOVE our library system!
Yep, "Neck to Neck" is a wonderful album. Chet Atkins "Sails" also has a nice dream like cover of "Why Worry" on it.
So far today:
- AC/DC, High Voltage, 180gm remaster LP :thmbsp:
- Supertramp, Breakfast In America LP
- Sue Foley, Changes CD
- Mark Knopfler, SHANGRI-LA , cd
"Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys - The Golden Years of Western Swing" (Various Artists) 4 CD set.
Andyman 10-28-2004, 06:56 PM I'm playing one of the local classic rock stations (WCSX) as the NPR station is doing the news thang.
It's kinda kewl today though. They're doing a Classic Rock Election A-Z thing and I'm hearing stuff I haven't heard for a while. They're in the "I"s and so far it's been:
"In A Gadda Da Vida", the whole 17 minute enchilada. Had to blast that on the LaScalas for the neighbors
"Inside, Looking Out", Grand Funk
"Instant Karma", Lennon
"Iron Man", Black Sabbath
and now playing, "Isn't it a Pity" George Harrison
If nothing else, it's a great flashback :thmbsp:
ProAc_Fan 10-28-2004, 07:00 PM U2 " The Joshua Tree" on vinyl. I wish MFSL would make a pressing of this Lp.

JDaniel 10-28-2004, 09:45 PM Playing for the kids a couple of comedy LPs I found today:
Ray Stevens Greatest Hits Vol. 2
Steve Martin - A Wild & Crazy Guy (can only play parts of this one with the kiddos around).
The Especially liked King Tut from Steve Martin, and from Ray Stevens, "The Haircut Song", and "Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting Pleasant Tasting Green & Purple Pills".
Yeah, they think I'm goofy. So what.
JD
Speaking of Ray Stevens...around 1968 he did this great song called "Mister Businessman" on Monument. I used to have it on a stereo 45. Anyone familiar with it?
JDaniel 10-29-2004, 12:06 AM Speaking of Ray Stevens...around 1968 he did this great song called "Mister Businessman" on Monument. I used to have it on a stereo 45. Anyone familiar with it?
Mr. Businessman is Track 1, Side 2 of this album. Listened to it just tonight. Other tracks on here are:
Side One:
Would Jesus Wear A Rolex (a Chet Atkins song in the credits)
Can He Love You Half As Much As I?
The Ballad of the Blue Cyclone
I Need Your Help Barry Manilow
Mama's In the Sky With Elvis
Side Two:
Mr. Businessman
The Haircut Song
Jeremiah Peabody's .....
Freddie Feelgood (and his Funky Little Five Piece Band)
In The Mood
I once saw Ray Stevens many moons ago at our regional fair (The Appalachian Fair - I'll wager Sandy G. has been there). Very entertaining.

CarlV 11-04-2004, 12:52 PM I decided to try going cd direct, MCD7008 to my 300B amps today for a change up. Listening to The Groundhog's Muddy Waters Songbook. A great one for us Tony McPhee fans.

CarlV 11-04-2004, 05:04 PM Up next was this Vanguard blues sampler I bought a couple years ago, then
The Splinter Group s/t, now it's Theatre of Tragedy's s/t. A great oldie nowadays, Liv Kristine's angelic vocals really are showcased well. A real favorite of mine.

I heartily agree, Dave. SKM has gotten more playing time here this year than any other cd. I had already made my best of 2k3 before I ever laid hands on that one, so it will get a special mention in 2k4's top ten from me.
Dave918 11-11-2004, 03:43 PM I did the same Eric. It will be late December before I finalize my top picks for this year, still several disks coming up for release that I want to check out.
-Dave
Dave918 11-11-2004, 03:55 PM Speaking of the best of 2004, just picked up another that I will have to give serious consideration for my top 10.
Grey DeLisle ~ The Graceful Ghost
Grey is married to Murry Hammond (Old 97's) and is a very talented lady. I would describe this disk as warm, inviting, and comfortable - but don't mistake that for standard or boring - this is a special collection of songs.

Alan,
I love Margo Timmins and the rest of the junkies, even if they are Canoodian. :D In fact, I just added a tune of theirs to my Christmas 2K4 compilation I'm working on, which is sure to make it to the Island. It was a duet with John Prine & Margo, no less.
Also, I have a killer C.J. compilation if interested. But if you have their catalog except for the Trinity Sessions, you probably don't need this comp.

JDaniel 11-25-2004, 08:05 AM Happy Thanksgiving my fellow AKers. I truly am thankful for the many friendships I've made around here.
I'm going to hold off on playing Alice's Restaurant Masacree until mid-morning. I'm waiting to see if the Mrs. is really going to listen with me.
I've got a big steaming mug of Starbucks Guatemalan coffee, and the turkey later today will have to be mighty good to best this. I enjoyed Guy Clark so much last night, that I'm starting out with my favorite disc of his Cold Dog Soup. Just an outstanding album.

I may have to break out some Jim Croce on vinyl later today.

JDaniel 11-25-2004, 02:57 PM I just ate enuf turkey for all you fellas, so you can lay off the food wherever you are. One of my son's counted 14 different food items spread out on the table. And that doesn't count the pumpkin pie we've yet to eat, nor the peanut butter fudge, and maple fudge my wife made this morning.
At the thrift store yesterday, my son picked out an album that he wanted to get. He heard the cd recently in his geography class as they were studying Australia. The album was Men at Work - Business As Usual. It has the radio tunes "Down Under" and "Who Can It Be Now." Turns out it is a dang fine album. It was cool to have him pick out some vinyl.
Dan - think I'll play "I Got A Name" on vinyl. Good recommendation.

bordeno 12-16-2004, 01:02 PM Cassette recording of "I Fought the Law," Bobby Fuller Four, recorded in the seventies on TDK SA tape and a Nakamichi LX-3. Sounded great in my car on the way to work this morning. An electrifying one-hit wonder.
XTC - Skylarking Truly an amazing, atmospheric, piece of music by (in my view) an underappreciated band.
The classic and little known alternative rock masterpiece "Boylan Heights," by the North Carolina band the Connells. Anyone who enjoys "new wave" or anything close to it, owes it to him/herself to hear this album.
JDaniel 12-16-2004, 11:28 PM Wow, Rick, an XTC post. I don't think I have ever seen an XTC post here before. Which reminds me, I have a few XTC discs that haven't been spun in a mighty long time. I may have to dust them off over the holidays.
I have a very good XTC comp someone gave me many years back. I just went and pulled it off the rack. It is 21 songs spanning 1986 - 2000. Great tunes such as "Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead", "Stupidly Happy", "The Ugly Underneath", "Humble Daisy", "1000 Umbrellas", "We're All Light", "Grass", "You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful" etc...
This one's going with me in the car tomorrow morning.
JD
bordeno 12-17-2004, 07:54 AM this is a band that I discovered listening to a "modern" rock station in Annapolis, late '70- early '80s. Oops, guess it was mid to late 80s actually. Hearing songs like "That's Really Super, Supergirl" and "Senses Working Overtime" piqued my curiosity.
Then later a friend lent me "Skylarking," the one entire album that I've heard by them. The next day I bought it. You couldn't burn anything back then.
Reading reviews on Amazon, I just ordered "English Settlement," supposedly at least as good as the other....a 2 record set. I'm giving it to my brother for Christmas and I'll burn a copy as soon as he opens it. :naughty:
Cheers.
JDaniel 12-23-2004, 10:43 AM I was buying some music yesterday for my sons for Christmas (they are into popular country stuff, so I picked up some Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn etc.). While there, I bought a cd for myself that is amazingly good, and it's not what I would normally buy: George Jones - Live From The Louisiana Hayride (live recordings from 1956 - 1969). It is very good.
Earlier, I played Third Day - Offerings.
And right now, I'm playing Dave Matthews Band - Everyday while wrapping presents with my daughter.
JD
JDaniel 12-23-2004, 11:25 AM Man, I just popped in a new disc from Dave - Root Awakening - An Ear-Opening Roots Music Sampler. It is outstanding. I mean, c'mon, how can it not be with the likes of Greg Brown, Dave Alvin, Lucy Kaplansky etc..
Man - there's just something about Greg Brown's voice. It shouldn't sound so good, but it just does. I'm going to have to go searching the rack for his "Milk of the Moon" cd (or whatever it's called).

He is good and you do get drawn in on quite a few tunes.

JDaniel 12-24-2004, 12:09 AM Boy, you've played the heck out of those Murphy and Neuwirth discs lately. But as I have all all three (thanks to you), I understand. All are incredible discs.
I'm listening to something a little less refined, but still good - Charlie Daniels Band - Fire on the Mountain.

6. Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin' - Tinsley Ellis
7. Boogie Woogie Santa Claus - Charles Brown

10. Santa Claus - Little Charlie & the Nightcats
11. Little Drummer Boy - Elvin Bishop

Hey John, PSSTT, if you'll check track #11 on my Xmas comp, you'll find it is Elvin Bishop - Little Drummer Boy.
And thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it sometime. You are always touting the virtues of Concrete Blonde. To my recollection, I've never heard a Concrete Blonde song.
JD
jguzman21 12-24-2004, 12:43 AM Well I'll be damned, you're right. Too much eggnog and weaving in and out of holiday traffic today have me not thinking straight :D .
And I was right it is a "killer" tune.

Ran across a used copy of Rickie Lee Jones "Traffic from Paradise" last night for five bucks, am now giving it a spin. Has a cool, jazzy cover of Bowie's "Rebel, Rebel" on it. :smoke: I bought the first four RLJ albums as they came out way back when. Liked all of them, but she was so s l o w in releasing new material, I kinda forgot about the 'ol girl, but have now caught up. Will also be spinning her new release "The Evening of My Best Day" later.

Yr thoughts on that one would be greatly appreciated.....
Yr thoughts on that one would be greatly appreciated.....
I like it! I feel that she was energized by her new band which includes bassist Mike Watt from Iggy Pop's group. It's a mixed bag of music styles (nothing unusual for RLJ) that includes a great blues song, a couple of rockers and her more common ballad-jazz stylings. Thanks to Overstock.com, I've managed to get caught up on all I've missed during the past decade from her at reasonable prices.
tentoze 01-13-2005, 11:12 AM I've never been disappointed in anything of hers that I bought, not that I have a complete collection or anything. Also was always impressed at the sound quality of all her stuff.
JDaniel 01-13-2005, 12:23 PM Sitting at home this am listening to selections from Willard Grant Conspiracy - Mojave, Everything's Fine, and Regard The End. The louder I play it, the better it sounds. I'm going to have to pick up the missing pieces from their collection. Oh wait - I'm not buying any new music or gear (smacks himself in the head :twak: ).
Now it is Wilco - A Ghost Is Born.
Celt - I too recently picked up RLJ Evening of my Best Day. I'll dig it out and spin it next, and post my thoughts. I still think her best was her S/T album back in 75 or 76.

Yamaha B-2 01-20-2005, 09:18 PM John Scofield's "Grace Under Pressure" followed by Dave Holland's "Selected Recordings".
New speaks are terrific for good jazz recordings. But a couple of things can't be listened to due to the bad quality of the recording. Garbage in, garbage to my ears. Ugh. But good recordings, like these, are terrific.

No I've not, but I just read about it at strummersite.com. I feel a purchase coming (despite my resolve not to buy new tunes).
And dangit, starting Dec. 24th for 7 days, they allowed downloads of two songs that never made any albums - 1969 & Ishen. And I missed it. Did anybody happen to download these? If so, please let me know.
I may have to get out London Calling and spin it tonight.
