Dave
"Verse" is very good. I've got six CDs & one SACD by PB and like them all. I still have to pick her latest one that was recorded in France. Probably my next purchase.
Hope I do as well as tentoze and Dave918 on the 3 LPs I just bought off of eBay. Got two Pat Benatar MoFi LPs and one standard for the princely sum of $12 + $4 shipping. All are proported to be in NM condition. Anytime I can get NM MoFi vinyl for under $6 an LP I am happy. Even if it is music I would not normally purchase.

JDaniel 01-27-2005, 08:57 PM I'm blessed to be able to regularly listen to some really good music, thanks in large part to you guys and your recommendations. It's rare that I listen to something bad anymore. But today, I experienced aural pain of the highest magnitude. Yesterday, I in a weak moment, picked up a copy of a 2003 cd -Fleetwood Mac - Say You Will. The only reason I did was because it said it has Sheryl Crow as a guest. This has to be the absolute worst album I've heard since Paul McCartney - Flaming Pie. The first song, "What's The World Coming To" was beyond horrible. And it never got much better. And I never did hear Sheryl Crow. Of course, I could have missed her while forming a callous on my finger from hitting the "next track" button so fast so many times.
I remember when I used to find Stevie Nicks voice both rough and attractive. Now it's just rough and out of key. Sounds like she swallowed some sandpaper. And some songs are just weird. Oh well, enough of that.
I did listen again to John Mayer - Any Given Thursday live album again. This one is a keeper.
Now it is Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway. One of 2003's best, without a doubt.

CarlV 02-03-2005, 06:24 PM Playin Ghost Of A Rose from Blackmore's Night. It was an amazing show Monday night. Candice had the audience in the palm of her hand with her
magnificent sweet voice. So many highlights, a standing ovation when she started to sing Diamonds and Rust, she put so much emotion into the song she had tears at the end. Ritchie Blackmore actually was talking and has a real sense of humor! He never did this any other time I had seen him back to 1971. Perfect in his playing still, some songs were arranged to feature his playing and some for Candice's vocals and her renaissance flute/coronet looking instrument. They did do A Child In Time from his early days too. :)

CarlV 02-10-2005, 07:50 PM I'm playing local stuff again. :) It's Big Mama Thornton with The Muddy Waters Blues Band. She's from west side of Berkeley where I worked for about 25 years. Decided to go see Mose Allison playing at Yoshi's jazz club at Jack London Square tonight. This native has never been there. yet. Had to choose as Derek Trucks Band is also playing too. But I did see them last July, this will be a real treat tonight. :smoke:

JDaniel 02-17-2005, 08:33 PM Giving a listen to Blue Merle - Burning in the Sun. This promo disc just showed up in the mail today. I must say, I'm very impressed. If I was weak like opt80 or reyneman, I'd have to go order more. But alas, I'm not like they are.
Earlier today I spun for the 3rd time this week perhaps the best Clash collection I've ever heard. It's a compilation I've had since about 2001, done by a friend over at AR, and it is outstanding (and that's not doing it justice). It spans about 10 albums. What a great collection. I sent it to bordeno - wonder if he's had time to spin it yet.

tentoze 03-04-2005, 12:18 AM John Hartford ~Morning Bugle~ a vinyl pick-up from yesterday. Now, I've been around the edges of Hartford's music for many years, but never owned any until now. This is a '72 vinyl release, and is just phenomenal to me. I mean, a banjo afficianado, great wry lyrics in the songs, and Norman Blake on acoustic guitar throughout- how could it miss for me? I get to a lot of things later than most folks, but am always glad just to get there.
tentoze 03-04-2005, 01:06 AM Being on the Left Coast sometimes feels like being a preacher without a church. On to J. Hartford vinyl pick-up #2- Aereo Plain from 1971. More great banjo, more Norman Blake guitar, along with Vassar Clements' fiddle- damn this is wonderful...............

JDaniel 03-24-2005, 09:03 PM Took a road trip with the family to Gatlinburg today. On the trip up, I listened to three cds:
Ray Charles - Genius Loves Company
Emmylou Harris - Red Dirt Girl
Sarah MacLachlan - Live Acoustic EP
The Ray Charles cd has it's moments, but it sounds to me like he was tired on this cd. His voice just doesn't have it's fullness at times. Worth listening to though. And some great duets with the likes of Van Morrison, Dianna Krall, Norah Jones etc.

abpeep 05-13-2005, 01:14 AM Digging through the vinyl and came across this one. abpeep 05-13-2005, 01:51 AM Still digging and pulled out an LP that I got from an old guy a while back - about 60 lps for $15 - a mix of potentially good and obviously bad. Hadn't checked out all of them yet.
On looking closely, this one looks very clean and turns out to be a German pressing. Sounds right as the guy told me he got many of them in Germany while he was stationed there. And it sounds so clean...........

CarlV 05-19-2005, 04:38 PM I'm playing Haggard's Eppur Si Muove again and finally found why the oboe and clarinet would distort in the right channel yesterday. I have swapped everything out in this room to find it, I have had a bad pair of IC's do this before, and although it looked immaculate it was the disk needing a cleaning.
Just thought I'd mention it as it is much easier diagnosis to start by making sure the disk is clean. :)

JDaniel 05-19-2005, 09:01 PM Lots of listening today. I've had tunes going most of the day. If my memory is correct (not bloody likely):
Meredith Brooks - Blurring the Edges (better than I expected)
Grateful Dead - American Beauty (Remaster w/ bonus tracks - always worth listening to)
Van Morrison - What's Wrong With This Picture? (on Blue Note Records)
Edwin McCain - The Austin Sessions (not bad, but just too much of the same)
Johnny Lang - Lie To Me (very good Southern Blues. I don't know if he's southern or not??)
Shelby Lynne - Identity Crisis (very good. Only problem is the sequencing. Sounds like the producer just hit random, and burned the album in that order. You'll have one rawkin song, one country song, one in between, etc.)
JD
JDaniel 05-19-2005, 10:21 PM Now I'm listening to Alison Krauss - Now That I've Found You - A Collection.

reyneman 05-26-2005, 05:41 PM American Gold "The Rock Connection" (South Eastern Records)
OK, there is no number on this, and after short plays of various cuts I understand why!
Think of some good pop tunes performed by people who not only butcher the songs style, but can't play or sing even their butchered version!
Should have figured there would not be original versions here for the 25 cents I spent (sealed album at that), but you'da thunk they could at least play better than my Grandpa at family get togethers.
I'll take Grandpa.

Started my vacation today fellows. Two weeks off. I don't have to be back to work until June 13th. Man oh man does it feel good.
Dammit, twwooo weeeeeks I haven't had a vacation longer than a 4 day weekend in 6 years :D
Just listening to NPR on the new/old SAE t102 tuner I picked up today.

Great pressing! As a bonus, actually got three records for my $2. Quiet vinyl, nice miking, clean.
Got so excited over the folk sounds, I ran outside, started a bonfire and sat around singing
Unfortunately, I forgot about the no burning laws here in this great county, cops and firemen arrived, put out the blaze and fined me :sigh:

Cool tuner I guess. Not much of a tuner guy myself as I really don't care about AM/FM that much....anymore. Sad really. FM radio once ruled.

Dave918 06-02-2005, 05:47 AM Starting off with a recent acquisition
Buddy Miller / Midnight and Lonesome
Released in 2002, this is a great mix of covers and originals, including several written by wife Julie (big fan of Julie's songwriting and singing talents here). Julie also adds backing vocals of course, as does Emmylou Harris. Jim Lauderdale, Tammy Rogers, and Al Perkins also lend a hand. This is a great disk, stands solidly behind Universal United House of Prayer, which is my hands down favorite Buddy Miller disk.

Dave918 06-02-2005, 06:27 AM Cheryl Wheeler / Defying Gravity
A pick up from this past weekend. Beautifully crafted songs about the dark and light sides of life with a touch of humor thrown in - what more could you ask. This is my first real introduction to Cheryl Wheeler and it won't be my last. I've already added a few more of her works to my buy list. Don't be surprised by the last two tracks, which are live recordings, that blow the tone and direction of this disk right out of the water. Some criticized the inclusion of these tracks. Me, I enjoyed them and thought they were quite funny.

JDaniel 06-02-2005, 06:15 PM For just a moment I was temporarily blinded by a light outside that I thought was the sun, but alas, it is quickly back to raining, which it has done non-stop since last Thursday (8 days now).
Lots of musical listens and pick-ups today. First up was a tasty little disc: Peter Bruntnell - Ends of the Earth. Kind of reminds me of Son Volt, Jay Farrar, Whiskeytown, with a twist of Tom Petty thrown in.
I also picked up 4 used ceedees today:
Doc Watson and David Holt (wonder if he's my cousin?) - Legacy.
Tift Merritt - Tambourine
Cowboy Junkies - Whites Off Earth Now
Retrospective - The Best of Suzanne Vega.
I gave the Tift Merritt disc a spin, and MAN was I surprised. This was nothing like Bramble Rose. This one at times rocks, then turns soulful, then sort of southern rock/alt-country at times. My only complaint is that it is a little all over the map. At times she sounds like Kathleen Edwards, at others like Norah Jones (complete with horns and organs in the soulful section), and then on the track The Plainest Thing she reminds me of Lucinda Williams.
I also listened to a new comp that I'll comment on later.
Hey, and it's only 5 o'clock! Still plenty of time to listen to more.

JDaniel 06-02-2005, 09:05 PM Listening to a very good cd - Richmond Fontaine - Winnemucca. I think I know 2 or 5 people around here who would like this.
Here's the description and a couple of reviews from Amazon:
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Originally released in 2002, "Winnemucca" was recorded at Type Foundry studios in Portland, Oregon by John Askew and Joanna Bolme (Steven Malkmus). "Winnemucca" finds the members of Richmond Fontaine mining a subtler vein than on previous efforts. The album deftly conjures up images of a late night ride through the desert where death, despair, and ultimately hope reign supreme. With "Winnemucca" Richmond Fontaine have established themselves as a band willing to travel where their music takes them.

I loved Richmond Fontaine's previous two albums, especially Lost Son, their latest before Winnemucca. But with Winnemucca, Richmond Fontaine have outdone themselves. I must say that this is one of the best, most timeless, touching, and simply gorgeous albums in the entire "alt.country" genre, if not in all music. Willy Vlautin's lyrics are evocative, emotional, and show so much pathos for the type of person i like to call the 'sensitive ...-up'. These types pepper his songs...like the kid being driven by his brother to a jail for low-level offenders (you know, the type who choose to imbibe a substance other than alcohol and have to spend the rest of their life paying for our society's hypocrisy)...and ray thames from 'five degrees below zero' who pawned all his stuff and now has to live at his uncle's due to some imaginable addiction or mess up (as a female ray thames, i know exactly how miserable this kind of thing can be). They reach musical, not just lyrical, epiphany here too, from each tear-jerking pedal steel note to the wails of feedback on the second instrumental "Patty's Retreat", Richmond Fontaine have not gotten the kind of attention that many other past and present alt.country bands have gotten, and all I can say is its a damn shame. They make Uncle Tupelo sound coarse, Ryan Adams sound like a bratty punk, and the supposedly "seminal" Gram Parsons sound like the most overrated performer in the history of the genre. And to the few who may agree with this review, I'd suggest you check out Pinetop Seven, another wonderful and unappreciated 'alt.country' band. Their album "Rigging The Toplights" has the same kind of gorgeous fairground melancholy as "Winnemucca". Also try Hem's debut album, "Rabbit Songs" for a similar kind of beauty with amazing female vocals. If the three of them played LA sometime soon, it would be sheer musical heaven.

Shades of Jay Farrar and Matthew Ryan. "Five Degrees Below Zero" is worth the price of admission alone. Wish these talented guys out of Oregon would do some touring. Mr. V is a great writer, and I can just sit around all day reciting the lyrics. Great effort!!

This CD reverberates with feelings and memories of being isolated and alone, walking along a 2-lane highway, trying to hitch a ride to a new destination. This album is much different than RF's previous albums, and perhaps not as good as the amazing "Miles From", however, the music and lyrics catch the listener's ear and pulls him in like a good novel. As with most of Willy Vlautin's songs, all the songs here tell a story. Most of them entail normal people put though extraordinary circumstances. In "Northern Skyline", a man holds his friend on the side of the road after a car wreck, as he makes promises to the dying man of "glowing light and beautiful women" before he is finally "set free." "Northline" tells the story of a former skinhead girlfriend of the storyteller who had fallen into the traps of her other boyfriend's messed up belief system and disappeares from the narrator's life. Perhaps the most disturbing, yet beautiful song is, "5 Degrees Below Zero" in which the protagonist, in a fit of rage about his life and his surroundings, stops the bus he is on in the middle of nowhere so he can walk out into the freezing elements to his imminent death. RF is not only the engaging lyrics of Mr. Vlautin, but also the incredible pedal steel playing of Paul Brainard, whose simple, but tasty style completes the feeling of each song perfectly. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes eery, Brainard's playing infuses the music with a touch of old-style country and new-psychedelica. The only thing missing from "Winnemucca" is the country punk that it has shown on all of its previous releases. Most of the songs are relaxed, and they are meant to do so...still some of the bands finer moments in the past have been from its Minutemen or X influences.

CarlV 06-09-2005, 03:38 PM Starting off today with Porcupine Tree "Up The Downstair" I bought last night
at the show. This is a re-vamped re-issue of their first album including an EP of material originally issued seperately but intended to be part of it. Boy were they great! :) Boy did Robert Fripp suck!
I also received a mail order from Sonic Cathedral of a half dozen disks this AM. :)
I also have bought @50 lp's at various SF stores in the past week I mostly haven't heard yet. I finally found a copy of Ella Fitzgerald singing with Louis Armstrong and his orchestra I have been looking for, very exciting!
Many other gems as well, of course.

Drybasement 06-09-2005, 06:26 PM I'll be getting that Up The Downstair remaster as soon as it becomes available in the States. Sounds like you had a good time at the PTree concert. I heard Fripp sucked from other sources and that he mostly played his Frippertronic ambient stuff.
