I picked this up on the release date, Sept. 27th, with great anticipation. I was not disappointed. What makes it's so interesting, and so historically important, is that Monk/Trane only performed together for one year (1957), and so very little of their performances was ever recorded. This is certainly a HUGE find. Just a gem of a recording. And great sound for something that has been "lost" for nearly 50 years.

Pretty good album considering "Us" followed his hugely successful album "So" but the music copies a lot of what was found on "So". Anyway, I always got a kick out of the song Kiss That Frog.
Jethro Tull's song Kissing Willie implied the same thing.

Sandy G 10-27-2005, 06:37 PM Right now, the "Seventies" channel on cable is playing "Blinded By The Light" by Manfred Mann. I remember when that one came out, it was SO cold in Richmond, & stayed that way for what seemed like an eternity. We're talkin' zero & below for like 6 weeks. They declared a state of emergency in Virginia. The "lake" at Univ. of Richmond froze, people were walking across it, some doofus got his car out on it-and then couldn't get traction to get off. The cold & snow was fun for awhile, but soon wore out its welcome.-Sandy G.

Do you have any Theatre Of Tragedy? I especially like S/T,Aegis, and Velvet Darkness They Fear their first second and third albums. Liv really shines on those as well. Darker and more gothic, by the last T.O.T with her they mutated into techno pop though. Very good techno pop, but techno pop.

Drybasement 11-17-2005, 12:47 PM Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges
Very "Ellingtonian" which doesn't surprise as Johnny Hodges was a long time member of The Dukes band.
Drybasement 11-17-2005, 01:37 PM Blue Mitchell - Boss Horn
Recorded November 17, 1966
A large ensemble gathered for this recording...with Blue being "the boss"
Blue Mitchell, trumpet; Julian Priester, trombone; Jerry Dodgion, alto sax, flute; Junior Cook, tenor sax; Pepper Adams, baritone sax; Cedar Walton and Chick Corea, piano; Gene Taylor, bass; Mickey Roker, drums; Duke Pearson, arranger.
Blue Mitchell's only contribution is an excellent bossa nova flavored tune. Chick Corea contributes two including his now famous "Tones For Joan's Bones". A couple of standards with nice arrangements from Duke Pearson. An interesting jazz album for it's time.
Drybasement 11-17-2005, 02:45 PM Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple

But most everyone knows that already..Working on a single motor Sony. Why I am bothering when I have two TEACs RTR's fully functional. :scratch2: Rolf's suggestion got it to stay on play and FF. http://www.wilshirepark.com/Buddaheads/index.html
The "Buddaheads" are fronted by the excellent guitarist/singer/songwriter Alan Mirikitani. I came across this band purely by accident one day while surfing the web and boy am I glad I did. Most excellent music. It's a shame they're not that well known. A fate that happens all to often in todays music business.
I currently own the aforementioned album Real and Go For Broke and I just ordered Mumbo Jumbo.

JDaniel 12-01-2005, 10:32 PM Now it is Elton John - Here and There on vinyl. This is an excellent E.J. album. Side one is a live recording from 1974 at London's Royal Festival Hall, and it presents the the "history of Elton John". As each song is played, more and more of the original artists from the songs join Elton (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, Ray Cooper). Side two is a live performance from Thanksgiving night 1974 at Madison Square Garden.

Black Sabbath? Why yes, I can hear some similarties. It's most pronounced on tracks 2 and 3. I love the male/female vocal interplay. They don't harmonize very well but it suits the music perfectly. The more I listen to this album the more I like it.
