Dizzy Gillespie - Sittin' In

Dizzy is the headliner here, hence the title, but this is really just another Norman Granz jam session. Norman Granz was famous for doing this sort of thing. Collecting a bunch a jazz greats for a bit of friendly competition. This is best exemplified on Norman Granz's Jam Sessions albums released on Clef Records (9 total). All of which are now available in a box set titled The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions. Highly recommended.

Sittin' In here are:

Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet; Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax; Wynton Kelly, piano; Wendell Marshall, bass; J.C. Heard, drums.

Recorded June 26, 1957

Used CD shop purchase for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone". Just threw it in expecting full disk of pleasant, background fluff in the same vein...
But no-o-o-o-o-o...

In the opening of the first track, "Tiger", she reached out, grabbed me by the balls and said, "Sit down and listen." I still am...

Bit over produced in spots, but the lady has some serious pipes, and more than a little writing talent. AMG says jazz training, and it shows in spots.

Nice to be pleasantly surprised every once in a while...

EDIT:... and again by the same disk... Last track is "I Don't Want to Wait"... Did not even know this was her. Just a cherry on top...

Clifford Jordan & John Gilmore - Blowing In From Chicago

Clifford Jordan, tenor sax; John Gilmore, tenor sax; Horace Silver, piano; Curly Russell, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

Recorded March 3, 1957.

I happened upon this disk one day while in the store. Noticed it was an RVG Blue Note. Flipped it over and took notice of the sidemen - Silver, Blakey, Russell - and then the recording date. Decided right away this has to be good. And it is. Highly recommended to those who like killer jazz.

Treated myself to a stop by the two-buck used vinyl store this AM, so I'm cleaning and spinning. First up:

Joan Armatrading~ The Shouting Stage- one of my favorite (if not the favorite) Joan albums, from 1988. I bought the cd when it came out, but I'd never seen it on vinyl before today. Great songs, great drumming from Dave Mattacks, some tasty guitar work by Mark Knopfler, and a fine sounding recording.

Next up:

Bobby Bare~ Sings Lullabyes, Legends, and Lies: The Songs of Shel Silverstein- For me, this is a real treasure, from 1973- double album recorded live "at RCA's Nashville Sound Studio" with a rowdy bunch of friends and admirers. Even features a duet with a VERY young Bobby Bare Jr, which he introduces by saying that some day, Jr. will be a star and will be embarrassed as hell at his old man for making him do it. A really fine record.

01-12-2006, 06:05 PM
On to the next one:

Hoyt Axton~ Saturday's Child- appears to be an early original pressing on Vee-Jay of Axton's 1963 debut album. Roger McGuinn is credited (as Jim, of course) on 12 string. This is a pretty mediocre album- mostly folky covers of old blooz tunes. And to top it off, he snuck in a cover of St. James Infirmary- and, no, Ray, it's nowhere near the Armstrong version.

01-12-2006, 06:21 PM

I am using my JBL cornerhorns in this room, 102db efficent. I was using
about 1/4 watt before this cd. This Epica goes full acoustic orchestra to full metal and it is handling transients/need for headroom perfectly. The EL84 I
had before would not do this on these speakers. My 12 watt 300B DRD blocks
I usually use here will play for the whole block. :)

The Best of BADFINGER (Apple 1969-1973

I have an excellent 2-disc compilation of Badfinger.

I just finished one of my favorite commercial compilations. Granted, it doesn't hold a candle to any of toze's comps, but it this one is good. And it arrived free in the mail a couple years back with an order I placed. Cash's version of "Witchita Lineman" is outstanding.

Lost and Found Vol. 1

1. Rosalie Come And Go - Ryan Adams
2. Just Like That - Marc Broussard
3. Buick Blues (Version One) - Lucinda Williams
4. Fools On Parade - The Jayhawks
5. Trouble Over Me - Tift Merritt
6. Run That By Me One More Time - Willie Nelson
7. Streets Of Sin - Joe Ely
8. Falling Star - The Jayhawks
9. Hockey Skates - Kathleen Edwards
10. Trees Get Wheeled Away - Bright Eyes

My brother is visiting from out of state. It's a cold day here, so we've been wading through a stack of vinyl. We first listened to a couple of sides of Lucinda Williams - Live at the Fillmore. Then it was M.U. - The Best of Jethro Tull. After that, Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run. After a break for lunch, he's now scrounging through my stack of Steely Dan LPs, so I'm sure that's up next.

Music - the elixir of life. Good music, good gear to play it on, good friends, and as a bonus add good food, - that's why we all enjoy this crazy audio hobby.

Jazz comp disc 7.

This has been an interesting set of discs. I believe it runs chronologically starting in the late 40's or early 50's and finishing in the mid to late 60's but that's only a guess and an educated one at that. This last disc contains free-form jazz that focuses on improvisation from the likes of John Coltrane, Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman. And you have Charles Mingus and the incomparable Wayne Shorter as well. The only one I didn't know was pianist Jaki Byard.

Anyway, been a great ride. I learned some things along the way and added a few more cd's to my ever increasing CD Universe wish list. Thanks again David.

Porcupine Tree? I check their website often and hadn't heard about anything new or available for preorder, well, except for the Moonloop ep on colored vinyl which I did pre-order from spendy England. And SW is re-releasing his Cover Version I and II singles again but I already have those.

I may order Stupid Dream when it comes out, that is, the 2cd edition which includes the DVD-A. Oh who am I kidding. I'll most likely order it even though you'll only be able to get it from The Burning Shed. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the original Snapper K-Scope version.

I'm also very excited about Tempest's new release The Double Cross. And Donald Fagan's new solo album Morph The Cat. And David Gilmour's new solo album On An Island. 2006 looks to be a very promising year in music.

Cheers

Right now, after having some cough syrup and OTC cold & flu meds, it is almost as much about hearing the stereo as it is the music. Not that the music isn't important.
Now playing the Cranberries, No need to argue. I really like those Irish bands, including U2!! Cranberries have the advantage of lovely ladies. Slurp.
I'm getting the best out of the 250 wpc of the big Soundcraftsmen, and it is as clean as it gets. I can't choose between the Yammie M-80 or this PA5001 (or the MA5002A, identical except for some meters and gain controls on the MA5002A).
This may be the swansong for the Kenwood Basic C2 as I have purchased the Yamaha C-2x monster control amp and intend to put it with the PA5001.
Damnitall. I have really fallen in love with the C2 all over again. It was my first preamp along with the Onkyo M-5160/M-5140 amps. Sold the other C2 a couple of weeks ago to a contact over at AA, and, along with the purchase of a C2 by Bold Eagle (due in part to my glowing testimonials), I got this one out and gave the switches a shot of DeoxIT and have been enjoying it since. The M-80/C-1 system has only been played a bit since putting the C2 back into a system--been listening for any scratchiness that might still be lurking.
