I'm only 5 songs into it but so far it's pretty cool. Very Dylan-esque in spots especially track 4, "Back Home". For years I avoided Dylan and what a mistake that was. Anyway, I think this will be a keeper.

Sonny Rollins, tenor sax; Wynton Kelly, piano; Doug Watkins, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums.

Time for a little lunch time break energy ... Ceux Qui Marchent Debout - Debout!

Talk about an oddball and yet highly entertaining album. Here's what one reviewer had to say about it...
Review by François Couture

Imagine Parliament played on marching drums, sousaphone, and banjo -- you'll get a good idea of what Debout! is about. Ceux-Qui-Marchent-Debout ("Those Who Walk Standing Up," because the group performs standing up, even the drummer) perform a mix of street-band funk songs and jazz-funk instrumentals using banjo, tuba, trumpet, trombone, bass drum, and a light drum set. Arrangements are inventive and playful, the playing is as tight as can be. Elements of ska and reggae add an extra party note. Lyrics are sung in French; they're witty and humorous and explain the superiority of mayonnaise over any other condiment ("La Mayo" or how the group deals with its neighbors ("Les Voisins". More generally, lyrics are limited to a couple of lines and used for their rhythmical and singalong qualities in true funk fashion. Instrumental tunes tend to sound similar to one another, like variations on a single theme -- the inevitable downside of playing such a precisely defined type of music.

Carl,

Astra was Asia's third album and by this time the well was quickly running dry. Their s/t'd first album still remains the best. Each subsequent album got progressively worse (and more cheesy if you ask me) but ymmv. There is one song on Astra that caught my attention and received some radio airplay back then and that song is "Go". The rest of the album was mediocre at best. Again, ymmv.

The Best of Arthur Alexander (Dot - early 60's) A great songwriter, who managed a few hits for himself ("Anna" - "You Better Move On") and whose songs were covered by The Beates, Stones, McCoys, Marshall Crenshaw and even Pearl Jam.

Brent Mason - Hot Wired (Mercury - 1997) An amazing guitarist. This album is very entertaining, but an odd mix of different genres of music. George Benson/Wes Montgomery jazz, Nashville style "chicken pickin'" and pop-rock. If you love instrumentals as much as I do, check this one out.

Recorded November 28, 1952.

Lester "The Pres" Young was nearing the end of his career (Lester died in March of 1959 at the age of 49) on this session. The prominent swing tenor sax blower influenced a great many players in his lifetime including Dexter Gordon. He sounds very good on this recording.
