Sonny Landreth - Sliding Through The Bayou

Disc 1.

'Toze, did you put this together?

I'm diggin' Sonny Landreth.

ChipB did that one, IIRC, but my memory is hazy. Landreth is about as fine a slide guitar slinger as there is, IMO, but I really prefer him in supporting roles, ala behind Hiatt. When he steps out as a front man, I have to admit some mixed feelings. For me, his songwriting is hit & miss, and his voice just isn't strong enough to keep me interested for a whole album of solo material. But, that swampy bottleneck blues guitar is something special indeed.

Well I have to admit, my 45 doesn't sound all that bad considering it's a Big Tree/Bell Records polystyrene pressing. Kinda has that *crunchy* thing going on. But! It has dynamics in spades! I ended up making a CD single from it.

Miles Davis - Seven Steps To Heaven

Miles Davis, trumpet; George Coleman, tenor sax; Victor Feldman, Herbie Hancock, piano; Ron Carter, bass; Frank Butler, Tony Williams, drums.

Recorded April 16th (Hollywood) and May 14th (New York), 1963.

This was a transitional period for Miles. His first great quintet had spit up and it would be two more years before the second great quintet would begin a new chapter. During this time Miles didn't have a permanent working group and played with a myriad of sidemen, the bulk of which was recorded live. The Seven Steps: Complete Columbia Recordings 1963-64 box set captures this period in Miles' career wonderfully and includes all of these concerts. Essential for any serious Miles Davis fan. The live concerts from this period were also reissued separately but are not complete nor are they in correct play order. Only the box set gives you that.

Cheers

Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus

J.R. Monterose, tenor sax; Jackie McLean, alto sax; Mal Waldron, piano; Charles Mingus, bass; Willie Jones, drums.

Recorded January 30, 1956.

Those that like the music of Charles Mingus know and understand what a creative genius he was. His music was always cutting edge and adventuresome. Listening to this now I can only wonder what the jazz world thought of this back 1956.

Pithecanthropus Erectus was Mingus' debut on Atlantic.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Mosaic

Freddie Hubbard, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Wayne Shorter, tenor sax; Cedar Walton, piano; Jymie Merritt, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

Recorded October 2, 1960.

Another superb session from Mr. Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He sure could bang a kit. No mistaking his style. One of the best technical jazz drummers there ever was. I gotta believe if Art influenced anybody at all it would have to be Tony Williams. Tony plays with the same fire and technical ability. Anyhoo, don't pass up any Jazz Messengers whether it's Art Blakey or Horace Silver as the leader. They're all good.

Stanley Turrentine - Joyride

Stanley Turrentine, tenor sax; Kenny Burrell, guitar; Herbie Hancock, piano; Bob Cranshaw, bass; Grady Tate, drums.

Orchestra arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson.

Recorded April 14, 1965.

Don't let the orchestra thing scare you away. This is quite good and the orchestration adds excellent depth to the music. As with most, if not all, Blue Note sessions, the sidemen are often familiar names and have at one time been leaders themselves having recorded many albums of their own. Sadly, Grady Tate is unknown to me. Must investigate.

Family - Anyway

Yesterday I listened to It's Only A Movie and Fearless and so far it's been pretty decent music but it can be spotty. One of the lead singers has an annoyingly pronounced falsetto or vibrato (whatever that's called) voice that's just a real turn-off for me. Other than that this band is pretty decent and can really jam at times.

Grant Green, guitar; Sonny Clark, piano; Sam Jones, bass; Art Blakey and Louis Hayes, drums.

Recorded December 23, 1961 and January 13 & 31, 1962.

Anyone who likes jazz guitar from this era should like this. Grant Green was the master in my books and this a must have. Yes, I think he was better than Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel and a host of others whose names escape me. While I do like this quartet session (and others) I do prefer hearing Grant in a larger ensemble. That is, with a piano in the rhythm section along with horn accompaniment. For me, the music is more diverse and interesting this way and not so much concentrated on Grant. But, to each their own.

Robin Eubanks, Trombone; Steve Wilson, soprano & alto sax; Steve Nelson, vibes & marimba; Dave Holland, double-bass; Billy Kilson, drums.

Released in 1998 on the ECM label. I love Holland's stuff. Excellent musicianship. Great compositions. With that said, the vibraphone is probably my least favorite instrument used in jazz compositions. That's why I've never warmed up to the likes of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson. In Holland's music, however, it's used sparingly enough and as an accent to the rhythm section. I wish he would incorporate a piano though.

Well, burned out on jazz radio for the last few days so I put on Theatre Of Tragedy's Velvet Darkness they fear. Like a breath of fresh air, sounding wonderful. Went and saw Javon Jackson last night. He played with Art Blakey
at the end of Art's career, a very good sax guy who is more into R+B except for last night. Session drummer Carl Allen who plays often and is most excellent
and Bennie Green on piano, and Nat Reeves filled out the band. Bennie was in a zone last night and it was fascinating watching him pick up the rhythms and going with it, most amazing solo's.

1) Son of legendary actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
2) Traditional Blues the way it should be made, free of Clorox and effects pedals.
3) Mixture of Chicago-based electric tunes and acoustic country blues songs, all original, except for 1 or 2.
4) Kicks ass.

Hiya, Toze! It's a double-cd set, too. I missed the hair-rock of the 80s, and this is my one and only. Not so bad really, if you get past that hair and posturing. Here I go Again is a "hits" compilation, so at least I get what someone picked as their best tunes.
heck, i don't even have a blondie album. Don't remember much about the 80s 'cepting i worked a lot and came home to the original Carver The Receiver and a MT-6363 Fisher tt and a pair of Mach Two's. Kept listening to my 60s and 70s tunes, but I bought some Boston LPs and there were a couple of others, maybe Heart and some other girl-fronted bands. I like very attractive young women, and if they can sing, even better :D
Yer example, I couldn't tell you a thing about Metallica. And they were big I understand.
