View Full Version : Tweeter, Etc. filed for chapter 11 today
birddog 06-11-2007, 05:32 PM Most if not all of the N.E. AK'ers are familiar with this audio retailer. Sad, although not my choice in where to spend audio dollars, but it is still a shame to see another audio retailer go downhill. Pretty soon the only place to buy gear will be the Big Box retail giants... Thank god there is still vintage equipment out there we can enjoy!
Strangeband 06-11-2007, 06:00 PM Tweeter bought the local chain Hi-Fi Buys a few years back. Now those stores are all closing. Though I did not buy much from them, I second your sentiment about diminishing options.
rickr15 06-11-2007, 06:13 PM I think they were called Wherehouse music here. The one by me disappeared a year or two ago.
Dusty Chalk 06-11-2007, 06:39 PM They sucked. I will not regret to see them go.
OvenMaster 06-11-2007, 07:23 PM Crap. My friends and I always got good deals there: my KEF speakers, Sennheiser phones, Yamaha tuners, interconnect cables. Except for one salesman, all were kind, friendly, knowledgable and never, ever pushy. I for one will miss them.
Tom
IXLR8 06-11-2007, 08:09 PM I got the best deals and enjoyed the folks at my Tweeters. I for two will miss them.
meggy 06-11-2007, 08:28 PM They'll probably keep going under 11. Maybe under a new name. Chapter 11 is more of a re-org with strict controls by the court or an appointed 3'd party to manage funds. 7 is usually a shutdown & liquidation.
Tapehead47 06-11-2007, 08:58 PM I never heard of Tweeters. It's a shame they tried to expand. I like the smaller stores, too. From what I've read so far, they were a small chain in a few states that provided access to stereo gear, including some upper end stuff?
I'm feeling for you. But Chap 11 may get you some good deals if they liquidate their stock before reorganizing. Keep your eyes (and ears) open.
Good luck,
Rick
EricC 06-11-2007, 09:47 PM They sucked. I will not regret to see them go.
More attitude then audio at the one by me growing up.
ka7niq 06-11-2007, 10:51 PM Too bad, one less place to go!
They own Sound Advice here in Tampa.
Tapehead47 06-11-2007, 11:11 PM Well, I never did care for Sound Advice. but I do go by there from time to time to check out new stuff. I never get any 'sound advice' when I visit. I feel like the Invisible Man in there.
But I still wouldn't want them to go out of business. They help keep the competion going.

thedelihaus 06-11-2007, 11:17 PM Tweeter was a great place to buy gear, for it seems ages now, until just a few years ago. Then, by either the market demands or new chiefs in power, they went to the "Sell the sizzle, not the steak" type of approach.
They still sold great brands, such as Pioneer Elite, and Denon, but the angle of sales changed, and they became less enjoyable, for me, to go to.
But at one time, they were amazing, and fun, and a real great place to visit, and occasionally buy from.
I may not miss the Tweeter of the last few years, but I''ll miss the Tweeter of my youth, over 19 years ago.
On that note, it's sad to see them go.
And remember, we've also lost Cambridge Soundworks this early February, too, which has gone from brick and mortar and online presence to strictly online sales, after Creative Corp of Japan and of Creative brand computer speakers and portable "iPod" style players bought 'em out just a few years back.
birddog 06-12-2007, 05:14 AM Like Tapehead47 said, it's only chapter 11, so they may survive, although as a mere shell of their former selves, or, more than likely, some investor group will buy the whole damn basket of goodies and rebadge it or liquidate most of it, and keep the ripe plums for themselves... :sigh:
In the '70s, the primary competing chains in the Boston area were Tech HiFi and Tweeter Etc. As I recall, Tweeter had a more "upscale" feel than Tech HiFi (I wonder if Tech HiFi had originally some attachment to/affiliation with MIT?).
I spent a lot of time in those days in both the Tech HiFi on Route 1 in Dedham and the Tweeter at the Chestnut Hill Mall, mainly fiddling with equipment that I couldn't even dream of affording.
I did, in the end, buy my Advent 201 at Tech HiFi (but most of my first system came from a way-cheaper mail order outfit somewhere in Maryland). With Tweeter in Chapter 11, it does seem that the local audio stores of my misspent youth have all but expired. :sigh:
OvenMaster 06-12-2007, 09:07 AM Ah, yes, Tech Hi-Fi. A friend of mine bought his Kenwood KA-3500 integrated as well as his Large Advents there when they had their annual half-price sale on Washington's Birthday. He still has both, and uses the Advents daily. Wall-to-wall people that one day of the year, but it was well worth waiting for!

240sx4u 06-12-2007, 09:10 AM In the local chicagoland area tweeter bought up United Audio. I dearly miss that store. Those were the days when I was pretty young, early teens, and was really into high end audio. "my" salesguy was really cool, and when i started making money so did he. We maintained a great relationship, and I would guess that there weren't many 16 yr olds that shopped there that were known on a first name basis.
Tweeter bought out United Audio. It totally lost that feel, and the magic for me.
Don't feel bad for tweeter. That company was very poorly run. I worked for them for about a year in 02 or so. They seemed to be about 6 steps behind the curve at all times. It was amazing. I did get some good deals. I got out before everything went in the tank.
If you guys want a good home audiio experience, go to your local Best Buy if they have a Magnolia home theater area. One of my best freinds works in a Magnolia. Very knowlegeable, and great equipment. Primaire is thier high end 2 channel stuff. They carry very simaler stuff to tweeter.
Anyway, I felt the need to vent! Sorry about that!

I agree that it's a shame that another retailer is going down the tubes. In my area, we stopped having any real choices in audio stores 20 or more years ago. Now it's all Best Buy and a few other places that sell home theater stuff.
The one high-end audio place that was left was run by a couple of bleepards that wanted to see your bank balance before they'd even let you in the door, and they finally retired a couple of years ago. Now there's nothing.
Sounds like Stereo Discounters!
Indeed. Stereo Discounters it was!
