To thank me for being a long-time subscriber, DirectTv emailed me an offer for a free DVR and a couple of bucks a month off my bill. (Of course, I have to extend my subscription for a year.)

Questions:

1. Does the DVR replace my current satellite box?

2. I don't have a phone jack near the box but I read somewhere that I would only have to hook the thing up to a phone line once a week or so to download info.

Does that sound right (or do I need to drill another hole down to the phone in my basement)?

Thanks.

1. Yup, the DVR is your satellite receiver, so you'd either deactivate your existing machine or install it in another room

2. You could hook up once a week and then force a download if you wanted. All you guide information comes from the satellite though, so you could theoretically go longer. Make sure you have a phone line connected for initial installation though!

DVR service is way cool...enjoy!

Hey, thanks a lot. I was starting to feel a little stone-age using a VCR to time shift.
