Hey all-

Just a quick question for those of you in the know...

I'm in the middle of a move, and called DirecTV to come by and install a new dish. No problem there, but they tell me that in order to do so, they need to upgrade me to their new 5-LNB compatible DVR so I can access all the HD content they're about to put up online.

No problem, right? Only issue is that my existing TiVo unit, which I LOVE needs to be traded in for the DirecTV branded DVR...which uses their own service, not the uber-cool, very simple TiVo user interface that my wife and I love.

Sooo...should I do it? Is anyone out there using the new DirecTV HD DVR? Impressions?

Thanks for any and all opinions...

We don't have HD but the regular DirecTV DVR works ok. My kids are constantly recording something.

Good to know...I really like the TiVo branded DVR service and have heard mixed reviews about the new DirecTV DVR service...hopefully my fears are (as usual) groundless...

I had the HD Tivo and recently "upgraded" so that I could get the new HD channels. The new machine is a pain compared to the Tivo, but better than the cable HD DVR. If you want the new HD channels, you really don't have a choice. :tears:

well, I have no problems with the interface on my scientific atlanta cable dvr, I find it very quick and easy to use. They do break alot in fact I need to go to get it replaced today, that will make the 3rd scientic atlanta cable box that has broken, maybe if the damn cable companey wouldnt keep giving me used junk!

While I have no personal experience with the DirecTV units, the consensus of the opinions at http://www.tivocommunity.com/
is that the non-Tivo units are more problematic: freeze up more often, pixellate, etc.
