I responded to an ad for 'vintage hi-fi for sale' and one of the list of items was an Akai AA-8000. I did a web search and found an ad for a brochure that had a nice looking unit called an AA-8000........(see pic).

But then the seller sent a photo of his AA-8000 (OMG! :sigh:) ....... can there be two models with the same name?

In any event, the one for sale is about the ugliest thing I've seen.

EDIT........... That explains it.......... its a typo, it's actually an AA-6000. Still ugly. Any comments on that beast?>

Here at the Home For Abused And Neglected Hi-Fi Equipment...um...it better be free. Two sets of bass/treble controls? Hmmm. Very interesting, in a purely academic sort of way.

Yeah, it's ugly all right. I always wanted to talk to the designers of really hideous stuff like the "AA8000", or the Pontiac Aztek. Then again, I want to talk to whoever it was that approved it for production.

I once had the chance to talk to a guy who was on the design team for that vehicle. He said that the body was designed for large, low-profile tires and was supposed to sit far lower than the final version. But after the sheetmetal design was finalized it was put on a minivan chassis and sent off for production. Either way, the left hand wasn't watching what the right was doing, resulting in the hideous design abortion we have on the road today.

Truly a very, very ugly piece of design work. It should be bought, then put out of its misery properly. :D

I somehow think if we saw a same era R2R on top of it, it would look a lot better.

Ugly? Well, yes...but interesting as a less-than-ideal design effort and a somewhat unusual/rare piece of audio history. Ugly in that "I'm so weird you'll look at me longer than other models" sort of way. I would add it to an audio collection, just BECAUSE the design is so different, even if it isn't nice. But that's just me.

The big un-answered question here is... how does it sound?

:scratch2:

I think I might be tempted to put it in the rack just so people would say,
"What the hell is THAT? An eight-track?"

I like it. Early '60s look. Very clean and simple. Doesn't have that "Ginza" look so admired by many, true.

Reminds me a little of the dash of the '64 T-Bird I used to own. And all those recessed switches would certainly make it dance-party safe!

The knobs look like the flat thumb wheel jobs
used on many cheap transistor radios. Maybe they
had some extras laying around in the parts bins and
wanted to use them up.

HomerJ,

Please check your PM's.

I was watching just last nite, Escape from New York, and I saw Tentoze's previous avatar, that huge guy with the funny mustache.

WHO IS THAT GUY?? I think I remember watching him as a child, wrestler or something....

GM seems to have a knack for taking show cars that get good response and then screwing them up when they do make production. Chrysler seems to be the best at doing it right (Challenger).
