A couple of years ago, I "discovered" Ry Cooder on Into the Purple Valley and really enjoyed it. I posted up here and was told that I needed to check out Chicken Skin Music. I've been keeping my eye out for a record ever since and finally found an excellent copy. I'm glad that I kept looking. Once again, I think that he defies easy categorization but he brings something new and interesting to old songs - e.g Stand By Me and Goodnight Irene.

If you have it, break it out and give it a listen again....ya' know you'll enjoy it! :)

Owned it since it was first released- excellent stuff. Tough to top Ry playing with Flaco Jiminez on accordion. I have a live album from that same period, with those players, that is really pretty fine.

I just starting getting into Ry Cooder myself. I bought his latest album My Name Is Buddy and followed that up with Chavez Ravine. I'll have to dig into earlier material.

I wonder what his Buena Vista Social Club stuff sounds like.

The BVSC stuff is fine as well, much closer in spirit to Chavez Ravine than the latest release, which is understandable given the BVSC's musical heritage.

I'm pretty biased in favor of his music, but I think you could throw a dart at a list of his work, and chances are it would hit a winner.

I haven't tried any of his latest material so I may have to keep an eye for that. The only problem is that it's probably only available on CD and I typically prefer a record...but I do buy CDs on occasion.

"Chicken Skin Music" is a great album. Check out "Paradise and Lunch" too, if you're just getting into Ry Cooder.

Ive been a fan of Ry Cooder since the mid 70's!
I go out of my way if he's on a tour for sure!

They are both colaboration efforts before he got into

A meeting by the river, remains one of my top 10:thmbsp:
Talking timbuktu is a classic!
His soundtrack to the film (Paris Texas) is great.

If you exhaust Ry Cooder's library, try "discovering" David Lindley. I'm pretty sure he has appeared on some of Ry's records, so you might assume he shares a lot of appreciation for the same sort of music. I've been a big fan of David's for many years, and have seen several of his shows, although it's been several years since those times. He is a multi-instrumentalist that can coax the blues out of an oud (middle-eastern lute-looking thing), and his Weissenborn slide guitar-playing is a marvel to behold. You can order disks from his website, www.davidlindley.com (and I think you can hear samples there too). Try the two live disks that feature Hani Nasser on hand-percussion, they are "official bootlegs" of some of his live shows of the 90's. Or if you're more into rock, try to find his earlier work with his band El-Rayo X. Or if you're really into the wayback machine experience, he was part of the experimental 60's band Kaleidoscope (not the British band of the same name).

P.S. I think "Chicken Skin" is Hawaiian slang for "really great"!

Ive seen Mr.Dave & Ry together live before!
He doesnt tour with Hani anymore,Last year when
he played in my town,he was with Wally Ingram
on various percussion toys(Im listening to
Twango Bango III right now).
The only recording by David lindley & El Rayo X
that ever really got any air play was
"Very,Very,Greasy"there's a great version of
Warren Zevon's - Werewolve's of London.
He is the Master of the Stringed instrument,IMHO
http://www.davidlindley.com/instruments.html
from the turkish Saz to a Oud or a Bouzouki,
Hawiian slack key,a Chumbush(a fretless banjo with a really long neck),Drobro,National steel, you name it.
All guitar work on early Bonnie Raitt and Jackson browne
recordings are David Lindley. Violin & pedal steel for CSN&Y's "Teach your children"
Great to See another Mr.Dave fan Bob!!!
Joyce,I'll do some research on where to find the LP's
Mine were bought some time ago.
And looking through my records, how could I forget
Bop till you drop,If you like Chicken Skin, this is more
similar.Meeting by the river is more "east india meets
mississippi slide and timbuktu has Ali Farke's african
rythyms swirling to slide.
I added a great Japanese LP import-"Mr.Dave!"

I have quit a few of his albums. Love them all. Did you know that is him playing guitar for the boy in the movie crossroads.

Don't forget the excellent work he did on this album. That's Ry (Ryland P. Cooder in the credits) standing at the back.

While looking for CD or LP copies of Ry's Work its possible to download Lossless copies of his recordings.

I must have passed by some audience recorded live sessions of Ry while looking for Lossless audiophile stuff to download and burn.

Thanks for turning me on to David. I'm listening to clips from his website.

Elusive disc was a good try and has some Ry but not Meeting by the River or Talking Timbuktu. I may just have to find them in the used bin.

I've heard Captain Beefheart before and didn't really enjoy the experience but decided to listen to Safe as Milk clips. Very different Captain Beefheart than I remember hearing. I think I've mostly heard Trout Mask Replica (and there's one other that a friend used to play but the name eludes me now) and that just left me wanting less - a little too disorganized for me. Safe as Milk though is bluesy. Did Ry leave the Beefheart band after Safe Milk?

I found a really nice copy of Bop til you Drop in the thrift store bin on Friday night. Good stuff! I'm on the look out for Chicken Skin, or any other RC title. :music:

Check out Acoustic Sounds, as well.

You had better be sitting down, though, when you see the results.
