Saw New Yorker Madeleine Peyroux on Friday night at the Vancouver Jazz Festival.Ffirst class performer. I recommend her music to you...she has three CDs out.

But other than the obvious local girl Diana Krall who are the popular woman jazz vocalist? Who do enjoy...???

I need to expand my music choices...

Thanks

Madeleine has a wonderful, captivating musical style. Saw her tonight on "Live From Abbey Road" - the series on the Sundance Channel. She talked about how she was a street musician in Paris and was playing outside a jazz club when they came out and offered her a gig inside. Too cool...

It is Episode 2 (also with Snow Patrol and the Red Hot Chili Peppers - both groups did pretty good short sets too) and comes on again Tues July 3rd if you want to catch it.

For other women in jazz, you might try Diane Schuur. She's been around for awhile and is one of the "tried and true"

Or, Eva Cassidy, who unfortunately is not with us anymore; but sure had a sweet voice. While not exactly jazz, she sure had her own style with standards. "Over The Rainbow" will never be the same once you've heard her sing it. Try her also on "People Get Ready" or "Fields Of Gold" and I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Try some Jane Monheit, Tierney Sutton, Chris Conner, June Christy and Rosemary Clooney. I wholeheartedly agree with words about Eva Cassidy. She was special.....

Hi
Madeleine's actually also on another CD with William Galison - 'got you on my mind' it's on wakingupmusic - get it from their .com site. It's my favourite of all her stuff, and has Carly Simon on one track.
Lots of other good vocalists from the other posters, - but also try Carmen McRae, as well as the original greats - Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington et al.

Cheers
Mick

Thanks to all for the suggestion!
Any more AKers with suggestion they are, of course, welcome.
And glad to hear there are other Madeleine Peyroux fans out there...she drew a really good and enthusiastic crowd in Vancouver.

I have really been a fan of Madeleine Peyroux since my wife and I saw her as part of the Vancouver Jazz Festival last year. I recommend Susannah McCorkle. Start with Most Requested Songs, Concord CCD-4976-2.

If you like Madeleine Peyroux, you should like Billie Holiday. Her influence in Peyroux's style is obvious. As others have mentioned, Ella is a great choice for anyone.

I also love Eva, too!
