I have no music from the KINKS in my library and would like to add some. So if there are any KINK's fans out there what would you tell me to get?

So if there are any KINK's fans out there what would you tell me to get? eljr 07-02-2007, 10:07 AM I just picked up a new copy of, "Muswell Hillbillies" SACD Friday. Might be a good place to start. arm013 07-02-2007, 10:12 AM Do you want vinyl or CD? Reissue or original? If you want original pressings expect to pay alot! What era kinks do you want? The Village Green Preservation Society is a great start and introduction. The remastered cd edition is worth the price. I am not a big fan of thier later 70's and 80's stuff. Hope this helps. Plenty of info on the net too. tentoze 07-02-2007, 10:21 AM Village Green is a definite, IMO. Everybody's In Showbiz is pretty fine as well. Celt 07-02-2007, 10:25 AM If you want a nice "best of" two-disc set, then may I suggest "KINKS the ultimate collection" (2002, Sanctuary Records SANDD109) It's an import and available thru Amazon.com. Covers their career from 1964 thru 1984, is well mastered and comes with a nice booklet full of color photos and info. Jack Lord 07-02-2007, 10:35 AM In addtion to Village Green, "Arthur" is considered their seminal masterpiece. Most of their stuff is pretty good. The early years is kind of pre-Metal, their middle period more artistic and their final phase straight rock and roll with Ray Davies' very witty lyrics. All have their particular appeal. Like a lot of bands, the late 60s/early 70s period is probably their apex, although they never really lost it (except on stage where the Davies Brothers tended to slug it out). Schoolboys in Disgrace, Low Budget, Sleepwalker, One for the Road (live retrospective), Lola vs Powerman, Misfits and Kinks Size will give you a taste and then some. But make sure to get Village Green Preservaton Society as well as Arthur. The Kinks lasted two decades more than the Beatles, so they were very prolific. KeninDC 07-02-2007, 10:43 AM If you want a nice "best of" two-disc set, then may I suggest "KINKS the ultimate collection" (2002, Sanctuary Records SANDD109) I just picked this one up. Excellent sound and selection of tunes. "Kinks Kronicles" is also worth looking into. The Kinks are a really fun band. The sweet melancholy of "Waterloo Sunset" is pure pop bliss. pk5555 07-02-2007, 11:35 AM I was planning on getting it on vinyl. My taste in music very's from 60's 70's rock to the blues. I have enough of Lola. Was hoping to find one of those escords that went under the radar that wasn't played to deaf on the radio. mhardy6647 07-02-2007, 12:32 PM I have a cutout LP called "the Kinks Greatest Celluloid Heroes". Sort of a greatest hits. Sort of. "Celluloid Heroes" is a magnificent song IMNSHO. There's also a good two-disc anthology from way back when called "Kink Kronikles". I actually have a copy of this somewhere, too. THis is a pretty good introduction. tentoze 07-02-2007, 12:38 PM "Celluloid Heroes" is a magnificent song IMNSHO. Co-signed. It saw daylight on Everybody's In Showbiz. gearhead 07-02-2007, 12:43 PM A good way to test-drive an album is to go to cduniverse.com and listen to song snippets. I like a lot of the KinKs stuff, there's so much good material! It would be impossible for a fan to tell you what to buy. (Fan-"BUY EVERYTHING!") Mystic 07-02-2007, 02:28 PM All of the above are fine suggestions, and many are essential Kinks albums. Another essential Kinks album is Something Else. If you are putting together a "library" of essential Kinks albums, then you must include this record. namahealani 07-02-2007, 05:16 PM All of the above are fine suggestions, and many are essential Kinks albums. Another essential Kinks album is Something Else. If you are putting together a "library" of essential Kinks albums, then you must include this record. "Something Else" was the first thing that came to my mind. I like "Face to Face" and "Village Green Preservation Society" also. I've found the CDs on the Castle Classics label Made in France to be the best sounding versions. I believe they are first pressings without Noise Reduction. Hard to find but worth the search. After those three I would pick up "The Kinks", "Kinda Kinks", "Kink Kontroversy", "Arthur" and "Live at Kelvin Hall". All can be found on the Catle label, France. The Kinks Ultimate Collection is a great place to start, too. ampegdan 07-02-2007, 07:58 PM 'Give The People What They Want' has some really good stuff on it; "Destroyer", "Back To Front", "Yo-Yo", "Around The Dial" etc. Different from their earlier stuff in a lot of ways and rocks pretty hard (for them). Dan gearhead 07-02-2007, 11:47 PM Dan & I have the same taste in music, it seems. I actually LIKE the '80s era Kinks, along with their other stuff. "Give the People..." & "Word of Mouth"---KranKin' KinKs!! tdst51 07-05-2007, 03:14 AM I have no music from the KINKS in my library and would like to add some. So if there are any KINK's fans out there what would you tell me to get? Anything. :smoke: ponderbear 07-05-2007, 10:08 AM I've been a kinks fan since high school. That means I've been a fan for a LONG time... anyway, My favorites on vinyl have always been Lola vs. Powerman and the moneygoround, Sleepwalker, Village Green, Something Else, and Arthur. I liked Low Budget a lot but wasn't crazy about the reverb they smothered everything in. Lots of good rock and roll though. If I had to choose one: Village Green. gearhead 07-05-2007, 10:54 AM Ya know, I was listening to UK Jive last night, there are a lot of great songs on there, too... |
