I've heard a couple cuts on the radio.

Any opinions, recommendations for a first album?

Any one would be good to add to your collection. I personally like his live in New Orleans and his live album from the Newport Jazz festival/

There aren't that many Prof. Longhair albums (he was criminally under recorded for most of his career). I suggest you get a retrospective of his late 40's and 50's material, which is his best stuff.

... is a good one. A lot of early songs. I especially enjoy Snooks Eaglin on guitar as he is just as unique as the Prof.

Lots of the Professor around here. For the best overview, look for the Rhino 2-Cd box set: The Professor Longhair Anthology -- Fess.

If you're listening to the Prof, look for James Booker -- of equal stature in the origination of New Orleans piano music.

I just remembered a couple more albums
Prof. Longhair- At the Madi Grass
Professor Longhair- Mess Around.
In your post, you said you caught some of his tunes on the radio. Did it happen to be on NPR. I heard some recently on a Sunday afternoon there

I heard Mess Around, just before Dr. Johns version, and another cut recently on Sirius Radio.

I did see that box set on amazon Wornears...I think thats the one I'll go with.

Wornears - good call with James Booker. His release "Classified" on Rounder is great!

Daedalus Music has Mardis Gras in New Orleans for $6.98. In case you've not discovered it, there's a lot of great CDs to be had cheap. Including some fantastic box sets of jazz and blues.

Rock on.
