View Full Version : Music I haven't played in at least 5 years Thread
Andyman 07-06-2007, 05:44 PM How many times have you gone through your collection and found either an item you bought and have NEVER opened or played, or found something you haven't played in at least 5 or more years? I'll bet pretty often.
Here's a couple new threads for all those oldies and well intentioned purchases or curiosities that haven't been heard for a while. this thread is of the long idle ones.
My first one is Billy Joel's "Piano Man". Used to pay this quite a bit in the late 70s, but I'll bet I haven't played it in 20 years. Bought a nice clean copy for a buck last week and just putting it on now.
tentoze 07-06-2007, 05:51 PM That's about 80% of what's piled everywhere in my house, Andy.
But, to answer the question, I played Allman Brothers' Live At The Fillmore set the other night for the first time this millennium, I believe.

Something tells me we ain't alone there, bro..............
nitrous 07-06-2007, 06:00 PM I've just rediscovered Return to Forever's "Where Have I Known You Before"
from the early 70s. Man, I used to just love listening to that jazzy space rock. Great stuff!
JDaniel 07-06-2007, 06:05 PM I listened to two albums today at work:
Steve Miller - Livin' in the USA
and like Eric:
Allman Bros. Band - Brothers and Sisters (what a damn fine album).

Oh, you definitely are not alone in this, er, situation. The number of LPs in my collection that I have not listened to in 5 or more years numbers in the thousands; the number of rock & blues CDs I have not listened to in 3-4 years is a couple of hundred. I think the last time I listened to my copy of the Allman Bros. Live At The Fillmore LP (a very nice WLP at that) was in the late 1980s, maybe the early 90s. Funny thing is that I think about that album quite a lot, about how improvisationally "free" the playing of the band is on that record, especially on the epic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed".
chathamdad 07-06-2007, 07:07 PM This is an eerily timely thread for me. Last night I put on "Loggins & Messina - Finale" for the first time in probably 15 years. My original, 30-year old LPs. This is the live album they recorded on their farewell tour in 1976-77. Last time I played it was through a Marantz 2220B and a pair of ADS bookshelf speakers. This time around: Harbeth Compact 7 speakers driven in passive bi-amp configuration by my Mac4300/MC754 combo. Holy crap, the old line about "you'll hear your old records in a whole new way" was absolutely true. Great sound-staging, sense of the arenas they recorded in, energy and immediacy (especially the acoustic guitars on the opening tracks), etc. I've got about 2 dozen LPs I have not played in decades but could not bring myself to throw out, collecting dust in my closet. They are coming out this weekend.
Recently...
Lucinda Williams / Lucinda Williams
Sarah McLachlan / Freedom Sessions
Parton-Ronstadt-Harris / Trio
Starrider1 07-06-2007, 07:49 PM Billy Joel 52nd Street was a gold LP. Good music too. I have my LP's listed on a SS File so I can browse them and pick out what I am in the mood to listen to at the time, saves me from trying to think about what I want to hear I pulled out a couple I had not played since I bought them for a buck each and they were good, Tim Weisberg - High Risk and Grover Washington Jr. - Feels So Good. Sounds like everyone else also has deja vu.
justw 07-07-2007, 12:20 AM A few weeks ago I listened to King Crimson - The Court Of The Crimson King. I had not heard or played that LP since pro'ly 1971. It still sounds best in dim light and very late at night. No chemical enhncements needed to enjoy it either!
whyaskit 07-07-2007, 12:48 AM I saw my Thomas Dolby, The Golden Age of Wireless cassette while tring to clean up my gear and music today and actually listened to it in the car while running errands earlier. A lot of my cassettes are on the 5 years plus for silence.
jazzwolf 07-07-2007, 10:46 AM Finally a music thread that doesn't have any "hate" in it.
I'm sorry but I'm never going to like everything you listen to and you're never going to like everything I listen to.
That being said I had the Nitty Gritty record cleaner going yesterday and started cleaning records and I came across some records I haven't played in years. After I cleaned them I played The Moody Blues "Long Distance Voyage" for the first time in years yesterday and I forgot I really liked it. I also played Grand Funk's Live album, I forgot what a kick ass LP that was; the first 2 David Johanssen solo lp's which were a complete contrast in styles and The Stranglers first 4 LP's (my wife has been away so I have plenty of time on my hands:music:)
Now the question is: Why do I keep buying LP's if I have tons of stuff I haven't listened to in ages?
It's a sickness I tell you!
I'm currently playing Pink Floyd "Relics" which I haven't played in a very long time and Syd Barrett still amazes me.
I'll be back to cleaning and playing today
