View Full Version : Cain & Cain Bailey
Brian, what's the deal with the "Bailey"? It was supposed to be released in the Spring yet Iwhen I check the website and get the "coming soon" message. Is it out and the page not updated or is Terry just buzy, postponed or still in evolution? Any idea on price?
As you know I spent a good deal of time with Abby at the MAF because I was considering it to replace my Silverlines. Terry had mentioned the revized "TQWT" project and I've been curious how that compares to the Abby. TIA.

Hi MikE,
In a recent phone conversation, Terry confirmed that the Bailey will begin production soon - it's not out yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's available by year's end. The main reason for the delay is that Cain & Cain's existing loudspeaker models have become so popular that most of Terry's time is spent just trying to keep up with the stream of orders...
What I CAN tell you about the upcoming Bailey is this:
1) The retail price has been tentatively set at $3000 per pair - about twice the cost of the Abby.
2) As currently envisioned by Terry, the Bailey promises to be Cain & Cain's most aesthetically sophisticated and eye-catching design to date.
Cheers,
Brian
That sounds very interesting. "Most eye-catching" that's saying something as I think that all of they're are speakers some of the most beautiful out there. Would that be discounted for AK members? Thanks for the update and looking forward to seeing some pixs!

I'll be sure to post some photos as soon as the speakers are available.
Regarding AK discounts, I sincerely doubt that I'd be able to convince Terry to let me add his speakers to THE AUDIOKARMA SHOP. However, he might be willing to let me work out some sort of AK-members-only introductory offer once the speakers begin production. I'll have to check and see...
Bailey is scrapped for the moment. Cabinet (real pretty) and driver were great in the bass. Fe 206e not suitable on high freqs without modification. Won't go there (for production) maybe another driver in the future. Mini double horn for 4" driver to replace Baileys target price pt. no more info yet. I'm still in Vegas for a couple of days and will have the new 4" fe108 dbl horn on the website in a few weeks.

Yup, I got the same news from Terry's wife a few days back. I'm hoping that the new double horns will be ready in time for AK-Fest 2004...

Hey, MikE!
If it turns out that the new mini double horns are not ready in time for AK-Fest 2004, I will instead bring Cain & Cain's new subwoofer to complement my Abbys.
Cheers,
Brian
What's it run? I saw pictures of it at CES. Looks nice. Sounds like fun! MikE

The retail price for Terry's self-powered sub is about the same as that of a pair of Abbys. In other words, this combination costs about the same as the Baileys would have...

Brian,
I have a pair of Abbys and a Yamamoto A-08 kit waiting for my soldering iron.
I am thinking about a sub. How do you connect the Cain-Cain sub to the rest of the system? Does the sub have any kind of level and x-over controls?
Regarding the 717As in the amp:
There is a paragraph in the kit instructions saying that the 717As have to be bought from Yamamoto Sound Craft. Can you confirm this? I have some NOS 717As in stock that I would like to use when the time comes.
(I might have misunderstood, because the English translation is not outstanding. The pics in the manual are great though.)

Hi bequerel,
Terry Cain's new subwoofer is a very flexible unit. It can be run from the outputs of either your preamplifier or your power amplifier. You can adjust both the volume level and the cross-over point. And there are switches that allow you to (1) invert the phase of the sub, and (2) run the sub full-range (although I would recommend against doing this).
In my opinion, the new Cain & Cain sub would be a perfect match for most high-efficiency loudspeakers. Not only is it fast enough to keep up with both single-driver and horn-loaded designs, it is also tonally rich enough to clearly reproduce the differences in texture between an upright bass, a bass guitar, and the pedal tones of a pipe organ.
Regarding your new A-08 kit, the 717As do NOT have to be purchased from Yamamoto Sound Craft. You are right in noting that the English translations leave a bit to be desired (I am working on this), and I think that what Mr. Yamamoto was trying to convey was that the company has a large supply of matched pairs of 717As, should you need another pair.
Cheers,
Brian

Well, it would appear that the name "Bailey" has been passed down to Cain & Cain's new self-powered subwoofer. For more information about this unit (including a photo taken at AK-Fest 2004 by our very own Wardsweb), click here (http://www.cain-cain.com/audio/bailey/).
