That's the new trend in avatars? Good, then I know what to set aside for use thirty years from now. I like vintage stuff, anyway! :D

That Pony is SERIOUSLY frightening....But if you know anything about Ponies, that's actually closer to their true nature than not...We had a mother & daughter that we were given (Bad sign, right there-) when we bought the saddle & tack. They were the meanest, surliest, most disagreeable animals TO BE SOOOO CUTE I have ever come in contact with. People get Ponies for their kids thinking they're little, & easier to handle than a horse-Big mistake. Our big Angus bull, Po Joe, was much more gentle & easier to handle than them damnable ponies were. You give him a handful or 2 of sweet feed-corn meal mixed w/dried molasses-& spend a half hour going over him w/a curry comb, you'd made a friend for life.

OK.. count me in on the game too.......your burro/pony looks like a tame one, SimiLost....your ankles are probably quite safe.....

.....I notice you live in Alexandria, VA....I stayed in hotels there three different times visiting DC for a full week each time....I remember the Masonic Temple Monument reaching seemingly to the clouds on the hill there....we had a rental car, but used the Metro to go into DC....I think I remember Alexandria being the next-to-last stop on the Blue-Line....great memories there....everyone should do DC at least once....of course you'll visit the Presidential Monuments, Washington's, Jefferson's, and Lincoln's, but don't miss Union Station and the Smithsonian buildings....my favorite Smithsonian building was the American History one that had the full-sized bright-green Penn Central steam locomotive and tender car in the lowest level of the building sitting on full-gauge rails.....

Yeh.. well.. I don't have much bark.. but I have been known to bite on very rare occasion.... Just kinda figured it fit in with the kiddie toons, and vintage to boot :thmbsp:

We live just south of Oldtown where you stayed. We live less than a mile from Mount Vernon... Another great place to see.

We get visitors out here fairly often, and end up seeing all the usual sights. I have gotten to know a lot about many places because of people visiting and asking questions. Makes me wanna know then too..

If you ever make it out this way again, let us know, we'd love to meet up.. I agree.. I believe everyone should see the capital of their country at least once. My wife and I both work in the District, so we are actually becoming immune to all the great sights. We do try and do at least one thing a month in the district though.

We do try and do at least one thing a month in the district though......who knows, SimiLost, another trip to DC could happen again....yes, you refreshed my memory as to where we stayed being Oldtown Alexandria....another time we stayed around Bethesda, with the Metro being on the Red-Line....riding on The Metro is cheaper than you think it would be....back in the mid-to-late 90's it cost us about a buck-50 to ride into DC from Alexandria and Bethesda, so that would be 3 bucks round, with one leg of the round trip being about 15-20 minutes....it's probably a bit more costly now, but probably not a whole lot more....I would advise someone wanting to experience DC to secure a motel room about 20 minutes from the end of a Metro run, and drive to the end-of-the-line station....you'd save tons that way on the overall trip, with lodging only getting MUCH higher the closer to The District you stay....here's a map of the Metro and the different colored routes.....

http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

.....here's the George Washington Masonic Temple I mentioned in Oldtown Alexandria.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:George_Washington_Masonic_Memorial.jpg

.....SimiLost, here's something you may not have heard yet....no building in "The District" can be taller than the Washington Monument.....

.....can I derail a thread or what?.....

Mulester, you are very professional. Not everyone can pull that off so adroitly. :D
(And I too appreciate the American History building for the same reasons.)

On topic, I've been running Kermit versions for so long, I'll forget who I am if I change now!

LOL.. yep.. hijacked..

As for the cost of the metro.. gone way up, and the parking is killer too.. something like $3.75 to park, and they just raised the rates again.. I think the farthest ride you can take on it runs close to $5, and some can be as low as $1.50... it is cheaper than trying to park in the district though..

As far as the height of the buildings, they can't be any taller than the top of the Capitol building dome.. so that's why they are all limited to 12 stories or less..

Here's you one.. the top of the Washington monument has a solid chunk of aluminum they capped it with back in the 1800's. It was the first piece that size ever cast, and one of the best castings ever made.. it cost something like $250 and some if I remember righ....

Here.. just found a page about it.. pretty cool considering their lack of knowledge about aluminum back then...

Aluminum eh? They should make a speaker out of the Monument. The tip could be the tweeter, or maybe 4 tweeters pointing in every direction. And some giant woofers in the tower. I supercolossal EPI Tower!

.....off topic....as sightings of new avatars now flow in only ocassionally, here's one concerning my favorite DC Building, which has it's own Metro Stop/station....Washington DC Union Train Station....we made many trips to there just to eat, and then walked around with a camera and sometimes tripod....the building is HUGE and Gothic in effect....don't miss the dusk-shot at the bottom, I've beheld that image 'live' many times....we always ate at the lower level food-court, that had International in-wall restaurants with a large common-eating area/room, with many classy dark-wooden tables w/chairs, you've seen them in malls, but the malls have cheap plastic seating usually.....yeah, we were DC poorhouse peasants, eatin' in the basement....but, we sure sat well, and ate uniquely wonderful food at working man's prices.....
